Hard review

I was really excited to get this book, as we just bought sheep and our neighbor gave us his bummer lamb as he didnt have time to feed it. We noticed one day that our couple days old lamb started to have diarrhea. So I read up on it and it said to give it Gateraid. I was surprised and my husband read it and sure enough that is what it said. So we gave it gateraid the amount and time it directed. The following day he was dead. I talked to my friend who is a vet tech was shocked and said NEVER give a lamb gateraid as it ferments in their stomach (they have multiple stomachs). I was so hurt that I ended up killing this lamb, by following this books instructions.

Please don’t buy this.

I wish I could give this zero stars. It’s by far the worst book imaginable. I grew up raising cattle but decided to venture into sheep so I did some research and this book was supposed to be the best. Well I’m halfway through it and it’s awful and provides inaccurate information. They’re saying sheep have no teeth on their top jaw. They state this repeatedly but yet actually do have teeth. They have molars, they just have no top incisors which is common in most ruminants. Oh and it also says I should pull an older sheep’s couple remaining teeth out with a pair of pliers. Some of the things like fencing, etc are good basics for those just starting out with any livestock. But I wouldn’t trust this book to rely on to keep my sheep alive.

Love this book! Great info!

I’m new this year to raising sheep. I’ve already had to search online for many things and yes the internet has an answer for everything BUT this book is excellent for having everything and more in one place! I’ve already learned so much and haven’t even read it all. I highly recommend it!

Very informative!

I love this book! I am getting Babydoll sheep next month and this book was recommended by the sellers. I must say it was a wonderful read- very informative, and I loved the different breeds mentioned. This book covers the history, breed, and overall care of sheep. It goes into how to tube feed newborns-with pictures and what to look for, when and a brief guide on where to vaccinate, and even how to shear a sheep- with step by step directions, too!
I highly recommend! There are even resource pages in the back of the book.

Comprehensive

I am very much a newbie when it comes to raising sheep. I have seen some other Story's guides and found them useful and comprehensive. This one did not disappoint, I love all of the topics it touches on. It isn't just a here is how to take care of sheep and this is a list of diseases. This book suggests appropriate fencing, delves into fleece types and breeds. It even touches on livestock guardian dogs and herding dogs. It can't cover every topic to the fullest extent, but it gives you enough information to understand how all the pieces fit together when raising sheep, some topics may need more investigation and research on the reader's part. I am enjoying this book though.

Excellent references book, extremely happy with purchase.

Excellent experience with this transaction, thank you!
The book is a wonderful reference, I've raised goats for 30 years and you'd think they'd be si.ilar enough, but this book is incredibly useful. From shearing tips, to bathing, meat verse milking varieties, nutritional tips. Gosh I wish I purchased sooner. I only have a small family heard of 5 sheep and on lamb. I didn't have the heart to have one of my ramb lamb butchered last season, and he's too big now, but so lovable. I intended to have two mating pairs of 2 kinds of sheep. But one ewe has two rams I just couldn't part with my Hamshire ram lambs (one is pure white hazel eyes & other is traditional color cream and brown face) they are so lovable. My ewe not as much, people I bought her from didn't handle her much. I bought my ram lams at 2 & 4 weeks & we handled them all the time & so did the guy & his sons I bought them from.

get the original

If you can, get the original version that's just written by Paula Simmons. Simmons knows her sheep and provides a great guide for caring for them. Her knowledge and passion for sheep is contagious. Readers will be eager to start their own backyard flocks. However, the newer editions lack the passion and deep, decades-long knowledge conveyed in the earlier versions on this book.
