Features & Highlights

  • The Iron Warriors came from nowhere, falling upon the world of Tallarn in a flash and devastating it with deadly virus weapons. A verdant world was transformed in a heartbeat into a radioactive wasteland... but that was only the beginning. It's a collection of all John French's tales from Tallarn… do you really need any more convincing? Okay then. Millions of tanks clashing in desperate battle on a dying world.
  • As the Warmaster's campaign of galactic domination continues, his generals seek out fresh battlefields to conquer. After leaving the Crone World of Iydris behind, Perturabo strikes for Tallarn. A bitter, vengeful primarch, the lord of the Iron Warriors unleashes a deadly bombardment against the world, killing millions but entrenching the survivors. A brutal, all-consuming armoured conflict ensues, the greatest of the war, and one that grinds down all combatants over more than a year of relentless battles. But Perturabo's reasons for the attack are about more than unleashing punitive destruction against the Imperium - he has an entirely darker purpose in mind.

Poorly Constructed

I rarely write reviews of books, but since the Black Library charges a premium price for their books, it is proportionately more disappointing when they fail to deliver premium quality.

I stopped reading this book on page 67, and have no wish to pick it up ever again. Specifically, the book fails to do the following by page 67:

Establish a sympathetic protagonist and describe their conflict.
Explain what is at stake for the protagonist.
Describe the antagonist and their goals.
Advance the plot by escalating conflict between the established characters.

Things happen in this book, but I don't care about any of the action because it doesn't clearly relate to established characters and their goals.

Another installment in the series

Ok so it's not a bad book, it just never managed to hook me, so it took me a while to get through this one. I enjoyed the ending though, to be fair.

Good read

This book has a tendency to shift all over the place story wise. It does stick to the main protagonists however.
It gives a very good account of fighting on a planet that has experienced exterminatus. It also details regular humans in armored vehicles against space Marines.
The look inside the life of an imperial assassin during an operation was very good.
Overall this was a very good read though some may find it hard to deal with the back-and-forth all over the place aspect of the storytelling.
