Compliance vs Learning

This book should be Teach Like a Cop. I had to own this book for a class. If you work in a non-charter school then this might not be a good purchase for you. The heavy emphasis on compliance (hand folding, sitting up straight, paper passing procedures ... ) all turned me off and reminded me of some type of military school. Rarely did any of the book mention that you need to develop a positive relationship and get to know the kids first. I recommended to the professor he switched the book for the next class.

*THE* book for classroom management

Several years ago I worked at a school that bought this book for all the staff. Now, over a decade and many ed books later, I still rank this as one of *the* books that made me who I am as a teacher. Practical, effective, clearly written ideas that will help you run your classes more smoothly & ensure all students are focused, attentive & engaged in the lessons. I bought the updated version a while back (look up there, it says "verified purchase"). [EDIT: IDK why but I don't see verified purchase on this review, :(]

PLEASE note: On June 11, an education professor went on twitter & encouraged ppl to post bad reviews here. So take that into consideration when reading the reviews.

Amazing, Inclusive Book with Actionable Strategies for Success

This is an amazing book that promulgates relationship-based, effective teaching strategies, systems, and approaches that can and do transform learning. I was surprised by the 1-star reviews describing this book as “racist” by inappropriately and inaccurately claiming that the book teaches oppressive, compliance-based strategies. The techniques in this book have remarkably increased the achievement of the same students that the 1-star reviewers claim the book oppresses. The techniques described in this book have actually reduced the minority achievement gap and have ensured the academic achievement of minority students. If you implemented even just 10 of the book’s 62 techniques, how much of a difference you would see in your classrooms? A lot! In fact, just read the last chapter. That’s worth the price of the book.

Four Stars

Not sure the added material is worth the larger price, but still a valuable resource for teachers.
