Very very easy book to understand and great for MS Office beginners

[[VIDEOID:af611915e681db227ddea05b794a108e]] Check out the video review of the book.

Pros
Easy to understand with tons of pictures to follow the classes step by step
Easy to find classes

Cons
Word and Excel are covered from beginners level to around mid level knowledge.
MS Access just teaches you beginner level things (still good if you don't know anything about making databases)
If you have any basic knowledge of ms office, you will probably be skipping a few classes (its that beginner level)

Great book

I bought a new computer with Windows 8 & the new Office 2013 software. My old computer had XP & Office 2000. Needless to say things had changed considerably. I went to get the "Dummies" books for both the Windows 8 & Office but saw the "Teach Yourself Visually" & bought those. Far & away these are better books. Lots of pictures so you can relate to what's on your computer screen. The language in the books are for those of us who are not "techies". From now on the "Teach Yourself Visually" books will be what I purchase.

A very thorough reference

This is not the first "Teach Yourself Visually" guide I have acquired. They are invariably very well done and very helpful. Using computers is ultimately a very kinesthetic visual experience. And, those manuals facilitate your learning through this most natural visual interface.

This book is a quality offering published on heavy glossy paper purposefully maximizing the visual impact. At 430 pages, it has a boatload of information on every major facet of Office 2013.

The book is well organized with 23 different chapters covering the main programs in much details including: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook and other less familiar applications such as Publisher and OneNote.

In summary, this is a very strong entry in the Office 2013 manual arena.

A great Overview of the Office Products

I recently took a job where I would be supporting Office 2013 a few weeks after I started. I found this book and decided it would be a good overview to help me get up to speed on the products. I was right about that. The book does give a decent overview of the entire office line which was great. At least it helps me navigate the screens well.

Where I felt this book fell short for me was that it does not cover any in depth troubleshooting. Which is fair enough, the book was scoped as an introduction, not a troubleshooting reference. I won't knock the book for what it is, it just wasn't quite what I was looking for or needed. But the book was informative on the level it goes into the products. If you are new to Office, I would highly recommend the book to you.

The only other constructive thing I can think of, is that it did not seem to be the most elegantly designed book. I didn't find it as scannable as I would have hoped. Otherwise, I just have praise for it being a good, but not great book. If you want to be ready to start a new job using office 2013 it's perfect. If you want to start helping 1000 people having questions regarding their problems and training issues, you'll need a little more.

Decent tutorials but not too helpful to users of older versions

This book provides step-by-step tutorials to common functions in the newest version of Office for Windows. As long as you get used to the layout of the tutorials, and as long as you're completely new to the Office product, you'll find the materials accessible and not too difficult to follow, if still quite dry. However, for old Office hands like myself, the book lacks information to guide me to discover new and different features in Office 2013, so for that I'm not all too satisfied with this book.

Office 2013 - Info that Micro Soft Didn't Provide

This manual is written in plain English with appropriate images that mirror that which you'd usually see on your computer.

It fills a huge hole that should have come with the Office 2013 MS Programme.

If you are lost having tried [mostly unsuccessfully] to understand the MS "Help" or "Tutorials" this could well be your viable solution at a considerably timesaving / cheaper option.

"Teach yourself visually" books are the best

I have used other books from this line over the years and I have always loved them. I finally upgraded to a new computer and with it I upgraded to Office 2013. I was fairly competent with the old Office, but I was afraid that I may have difficulty with the changes in 2013. Like the "Teach Yourself" books of the past, this one is an excellent resource for novice users as well as experienced users. I was able to quickly familiarize myself with the changes in 2013, and I feel like I have a handle on most aspects. Later on, when I ran into problems with Excel, I was able to quickly find what I needed in the Teach Yourself book. I have never been disappointed with a "Teach Yourself Visually" book in the past, and this one is no exception. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to Office 2013.

Visually appealing and helpful

The book appears to be very easy to follow. The colors, the font size, how it is all laid out is very nice. I have used Word a little bit but I have not used the other programs very much or at all such as Excel. I will be going thru each program and using the book like a teacher. I am also viewing the videos that Microsoft has on their website so that I can learn as much as possible. As I do I will update my review of the book.

so far I have noticed that the Table of contents is very good. It is laid out in such a way that you can very easily find a topic on just one aspect of a program such as in chapter 5 it starts going thru the various options of Word and it states that on page 68 you can learn how to insert symbols. Now, if you forget how to do that sometime in the future you can easily find the correct page in the table of contents and go right to that page of the book and it will walk you right through the process. I love it when the information is easy to find and easy to understand.

I have never purchased a book from the Teach Yourself Visually series before and I look forward to having it take me on the learning journey.

It has been a few weeks since my initial review and I have been able to use the book. I started with the chapters on Word. Each topic is in bold and in a colored box so it is easy to find. Then, each step is numbered and it all corresponds to the screen shot so you are able to see exactly what your screen should look like as you do it. There is also a tips section at the end of each topic discussion.

Every aspect of Word is covered from changing the font size, to using templates, inserting page numbers, setting margins, etc. If this book does not have the answer there is always Office.com for help.

It was not what I was looking for.

It was not what I was looking for. IF you need to learn Office from scratch, it would probably be a useful tool. I needed to learn the principle difference between an old version of Office and the 2013 version. It does not do a good job at that. I ended up returning the book.
