Features & Highlights

  • Winner of the Lincoln Prize Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Abraham Lincoln's political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president.
  • On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires. It was this capacity that enabled Lincoln as president to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to the task of preserving the Union and winning the war. We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

No unabridged audio version.

Who in their right mind would buy an abridged audio version of any book. The lack of an unbridged version makes this a "don't buy" for me. The print version is fine but I'd like a "real" audio version for travel not some fake thing!

Interesting but missing something ...

This fills in information that you missed in history class. But I don't agree with all the author's praising all the things that Lincoln did. Some of the chapters are rather slow-moving, but listening to this on CD is a good way to absorb some history.

Surprising and engaging look at Lincoln's Presidency

After being very disappointed in Goodwin's No Ordinary Time about FDR's handling of the Second World War, this book was a very pleasing, very riveting surprise that I found myself wishing it would keep going on.

The book begins with the race for the 1860 Republican nomination for president, which Lincoln was an absolute long shot to win. Nevertheless, Lincoln and his allies' effective use of backroom politicking is revealed as a masterful effort, resulting in his nomination over much better known national candidates. Welding together the bruised egos and reputations of those who he had defeated, Lincoln then turned to those same national leaders and formed a cabinet to combat the most challenging period faced by a 19th century president- the Civil War.

Team of Rivals reveals the backstage dramas that came with self-important men, the chalenges of running a country that was fighting itself, and the threats posed by external issues such as foreign relations. Lincoln's personal efforts to mollify, cajole, and out-maneuver his rivals are strikingly shown, revealing the mastery he had over the men of his era and foresight he carried to his tragic end.

Of all the audio books I have ever listened to, this one makes my top three with D-Day and Citizen Soldiers.

Excellent- Listen to the Unabridged

I could not find the unabridged at Amazon, but I think I got it a B&N. It is a great book and ready by Richard Thomas - wonderful reader. I was moved to tears more than once by the amazing grace and intelligence of Lincoln. Goodwin brings out the events in their historical perspective. This is how history should be presented.

well written but presents no new insight

I read this book after reading [[ASIN:1400064996 A. Lincoln: A Biography]. I found that though this book is well written it presents no new information. All the inner dealings with the cabinet are all detailed just as well in the other book. So I'm not sure what the purpose of writing this book was. It really does not present any new or profound insight into Lincoln's cabinet. I would reccomend reading the other book over this becuase at least the other book gives you a context for the actions of Lincoln later in his life. You come away with a richer appreciation for the man from the other book.

Simply a great book

The book is about Abraham Lincoln and the men who ran against him for the Republican nomination, namely Bates, Seward, and Chase. Also featured are Grant, McClellan, and Stanton. After the election Lincoln puts all of his rivals on his cabinet. This book is about the interplay of this cabinet during the time of the Civil War. If you are into the Civil War you will like this book, because there is much detail here. Goodwin is an expert on the letters that Lincoln and his cabinet members wrote about and to one another. If you like political maneuvering then you will like this book. If you like a good biography of Lincoln, that is included, but this book is much more than that. If you are looking for a good book about a great leader, then you will benefit from this book. The book on CD is read by Richard Harris (aka John Boy from the Walton's) and is very well done. The best thing about this book for me was that I felt like I had entered into the struggle with all of its grief and stark humanity with Lincoln. When a book does that, then it was well written. This is well worth the money.

A GREAT audio CD (book) for any Abe Lincoln fan

Mr. Lincoln and his cabinet members come alive in Ms. Goodwin's biography of our greatest president. During the Civil War Lincoln was able to put together the greatest minds of his time to hold our country together. Her thoroughly researched stories jump off the page as if Lincoln were in the room with the listener (reader).
