Description

Charles Major (1856-1913) was an American lawyer and novelist. Born to an upper-middle class Indianapolis family, Major developed in interest in both law and English history at an early age and attended the University of Michigan from 1872 through 1875, being admitted to the Indiana bar association in 1877. Shortly thereafter he opened his own law practice, which launched a short political career, culminating in a year-long term in the Indiana state legislature. Writing remained an interest of Major, and in 1898, he published his first novel, When Knighthood Was in Flower. The novel about England during the reign of King Henry VIII was an exhaustively researched historical romance, and became enormously popular, holding a place on the New York Times bestselling list for nearly three years. Major continued to write and publish several additional novels, to varying degrees of success, as well as a number of children's adventure stories, most set in and around his native state of Indiana.

Features & Highlights

  • The Bears of Blue River describes the adventures of a young boy growing up in early nineteenth-century rural Indiana. Little Balser lives with his parents, a younger brother, and a baby sister in a cozy log cabin on the bank of the Big Blue River. Although only thirteen or fourteen years old, he is quite familiar with the dangers and rigors of frontier life. As the story unfolds, the boy becomes lost in the forest, encounters the fierce one-eared bear, and is nearly caught by a bear as he dozes next to what he thinks is a bearskin. This is a book for children or adults who love nature and tales of early pioneer life.

This Edition Needed a Proofreader!

This new CreateSpace edition is a bother to read because of all the needless and foolish typos. It is possible for a skilled reader to read around the typos but they are distracting. The typos will probably serve to confuse younger, less skilled readers. English-teacher me read the book with pencil in hand to correct the lousy proofreading job. Why would someone ruin a valuable old book by putting out such a shoddy, compromised edition? Shame on the lazy editor. I suggest that potential buyers first try to find a used copy of an older edition, one from an era when authors and editors took pride in their work. The stories of the bears are very good. A fine teacher friend reads this to his students every year and they love it!

Riddled with errors

This is obviously a cheap scan of an older text reformatted without any copy editing. It is riddled with typographical errors, such as 'though;' for 'thought', 'from' for 'farm', and 'rook' for 'nook', as if the scanner couldn't quite read whatever serif font the original was in. An entire paragraph from the beginning of Chapter Two was repeated at the top of Chapter Three. I HOPE that it was just extra and not replacing some other paragraph - Chapter Three reads okay after skipping it, but I have no way to be certain I'm not missing some of the original text. I'm only up to Chapter 4 so far- I don't dare give this to my kids to read themselves, since they don't yet have the experience to recognize a typo from a genuine Hoosierism or older turn of phrase.

It's a shame, because this is a great story of early state settlement of Indiana, with many places named that we've personally visited. I'd like to have a copy that my boys can explore themselves and re-read as much as they like without confusion.

Terrible transcription

It’s a great story but this particular copy just has too many errors and mistakes to enjoy easily.

Too many typos and mistakes for young readers to deal with.

For a young reader, this book is a mess. Only 3 chapters in and there have already been 5 typos. The opening paragraph from chapter 2 was also the opening paragraph for cha[ter 3. Like it was accidentally copied and pasted. I can't believe this book is being distributed this way.

Great book fir older kids taking them back to the pioneer days in Indiana.

This was my favorite book in elementary school, taking place in Indiana where I grew up. The story is great but the grammar and punctuation aren’t good. Overall I loved it then and now.
