Description

"Far from some boring subject only ruler-wieldingxa0schoolmarms care about, grammar is the foundation of anything you write, and byxa0extension, one's professionalxa0reputation. This exhaustive reference leaves noxa0stone unturned, while its lesson/exercise format (nearly 100 exercises!)xa0effectively reinforces a reader'sxa0understanding. It belongs on the bookshelf ofxa0anyone who has to write anything, any time. Highly recommended." xa0 Peter Bowerman, multiple-award-winning author The Well-Fed Writer andxa0The Well-Fed Self-Publisher "Arlene Miller's The Best Grammar Workbook Ever! is the most comprehensive and instructive guide to grammar that I've read in a long while. With authority and humor, Miller covers every grammatical concept you'll need to master your writing."xa0Jeff Deck, Co-author of The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time "Proud to say Arlene not only taught me about grammar rules I wasn't sure about, but she set me straight on things I'd been doing wrong for years and didn't know it." xa0 Sharon Hamilton New York Times and USA Today bestselling author"There's much to admire in this comprehensive yet relatively straightforward book. I went straight to a terminology question I'd been thinking about (the difference between relative and demonstrative pronouns) and came away with a clear understanding of this difference. On pages 56-57, I think the writer does a good job explaining the "his or her" situation. It would take a very motivated student to go through this text without a teacher or tutor, but I feel that someone motivated enough to do so would come away with a very good understanding of grammar, punctuation, and usage.I think the examples of various rules are easy to understand and well chosen."-Judge, 25th Annual Writer's Digest Awards"I have always struggled with teaching grammar, and this has been a great start for me. I like its quick little blurbs of grammar with small practice opportunities. The students are engaged despite their resistance to grammar time."Catherine B., teacher Arlene Miller, also known as "The Grammar Diva," is the author of five grammar books and a novel. The purpose of Arlene's books is to clear up common grammar issues. Arlene is CEO of bigwords101. In addition to writing books, Arlene writes a weekly blog post about grammar, punctuation, and anything else to do with words. She is also a copyeditor for both fiction and nonfiction books, and offers corporate grammar and business-writing presentations and workshops. Errors Everywhere

The book has a great concept behind it. The problem is that there are so many big mistakes. Grammatical errors in the examples, in a book written to teach you grammar? I'm assuming this is self-published. She should have had an editor or a second pair of eyes look over this. It's a shame because the layout and the idea behind the workbook are wonderful, hence the 3 stars. I see the effort, but not enough time went into proofreading. If I am finding such glaring errors in the parts I do know, what am I incorrectly learning from the parts I don't know? I understand her other books don't have this problem and are quite good.

1 Major Improvement Needs To Be Made for 4 or 5 Stars.

I would say that the author does perforated lines for the answers. That way parents can pull out the answers and give the workbook to kids and they can go over everything later. It is a major pain in the butt to have to flip back and forth to check the answers. However the actual workbook and questions I have no issues with. The pretest is great to see where a person is at overall. Which is another thing that could be useful for a re write later. Have the pretest where it's categorized as to area of grammar. That way a person can easily tell where they are weak and focus on that area first and obtain more guidance.

Nouns

Please look at my pictures. The first is the practice questions and the 2nd is the answers. The words I circled are not included in the answer as nouns. I have a lot to learn, hence why I bought this book. If anyone could tell me why the circled words are not considered nouns please let me know. Thanks!

Comprehensive and clear--functions as a reference as well as a workbook

As a professional editor, I feel as if I ought to be able to write a book like this myself. But I could never match the depth of knowledge and the clear way it's presented in Miller's workbook. This would be a great way to learn the rules of English grammar for the first time. It's also great as a reference and for those of us who are "intuitive grammarians"--that is, we know when something is right or not right, but have no idea why!

I particularly like Chapter 11, "Some Really Important Grammar Issues." These are ideas that can actually help you become a more effective communicator, not simply a follower of grammatical rules. The chapter looks at things like run-on sentences, misplaced modifiers, and parallel structure. If you don't know why those are important, read this book!

(Full disclosure: I received an electronic copy of this book to review from the author. However, I found it so useful I am planning to purchase a paper copy for reference while editing.)

Great for looking things up and practicing

I was looking for a good grammar book to use with my homeschooled child and to freshen up some points in my own mind. While this one was recommend on several sights, I'm not the biggest fan.
The information is well organized, explained, and there are exercises offered to practice it. It's not trouble to look things up and gain a good understanding of each grammar rule as long as you already have a pretty good handle on things, in general.
I was really not impressed with the self-test in the beginning. While the terms of various grammar points are good to know, there was a huge emphasis on this, which for me, as someone who edits quite often, isn't exactly practical or helpful.
Also, I had hoped for more exercises to work on the various points, especially for my homeschooled child. Depending on the grammar point, there are more or less of these. But this is not what this book is intended for completely. At least, not done in a way which works well for my 9th grader, since it's a bit dry, extremely crowded (the printed pages do not include any real division between explanation and exercises, which causes a visual overload for anyone learning) Plus, there isn't any extra space for answers. It's just too tight for teaching purposes. Also, the answer key is at the back of the book (not really a problem), but this requires tons of flipping and searching. So, for homeschooling purposes, not ideal.
In any case, this is book holds a wealth on grammar information and fulfills its general purpose well, but it wasn't what I was looking for.

this is the Best Grammar Workbook Ever

The title does not lie; this is the Best Grammar Workbook Ever! Whether you want a grammar review, a reference guide or a teaching tool, this workbook is the only book you will need. The logical and clear progression from basic grammar skills to more complex grammatical proficiency makes this workbook an exceptional educational tool. To assure skill mastery, each chapter offers a pre-test and post-test. I would suggest the companion book “The Best Little Grammar Book Ever” as an additional resource.

Is this an ERROR???????

Chapter 1: Recognizing Nouns. Identify nouns in sentence: "Peter gave his cake to his younger brother."
Answer in Appendix G: cake, brother.
My question - why isn't 'Peter' considered a noun here? The next page identifies Proper nouns "as nouns that start with Capital letters. They are specific people, places, things, or ideas such as Florida."
Why isn't 'Peter' considered a noun?
Did the author mean to say "identify the common nouns in the sentence?"

If someone is able to answer my question, I will retrieve this book from the trash and continue going through it. As it stands, I believe tI wasted my money.

The Best Grammar Workbook Ever is a powerbook for teachers and ...

The Best Grammar Workbook Ever is a powerbook for teachers and students: teachers to use it in class and students for self-study, because of the provided answers in Appendix 6. Although short, practice tests give a hint whether students need more explanation or not. The chapter tests have a variety of exercises, such as, matching, identifying, writing and rewriting sentences, filling in gaps, labeling, adding, choosing between options, correcting and the inevitable multiple choice. The language used for explaining rules is simple enough to be easily understood. Recommendations, what to use and what not to use including when and where, are exemplified which gives students clear-cut direction to better express themselves. I especially like the chapter about commas because in my native language (Macedonian) some of the rules of using commas are quite different. Additionally, use of italics is neglected, but this book gives straightforward answer when to use it. The list of commonly confused words is user-friendly because it is divided into groups according to the first letter of the word. The appendixes are also useful for a quick reference when necessary. Finally, the glossary of the grammar terms is self-explanatory. This grammar workbook is one of the best that I have come across, and I have always wondered why writers do not use more graphics, pictures or color in their grammar books!

Terrific workbook!

This work book makes me feel like I'm sitting in the front row of the class, listening to Arlene explain the details of the language. It's wonderfully thorough and complete, perfect for self-paced study. I know a lot of people who could benefit from the use of this book (myself included). No one who took the time to use this book could fail to improve their command of written and spoken English. Best book yet from the Grammar Diva.
