Description

"I’ve been reading Megan’s blog for a while now, and am often mesmerized (read: drooling all over my keyboard) by her recipe posts. They always look so tasty - and the few I’ve recreated at home taste delicious too. So I knew I needed to get my paws on this cookbook." -Off the Eaten Path “[Megan] stays away from obscure ingredients and focuses on the basics of the diet. She shows you how to cook healthy staples in a variety of ways and includes some gorgeous food photography.” -Seven Layer Charlotte The book itself is very well designed and organized, and I love how each chapter is organized by the 15 top Paleo-friendly ingredients. The variations for each recipe are clever and unexpected, too.” -Feast and West "You don’t have to be on a paleo diet to enjoy the recipes in here, you just have to enjoy eating real, healthy food. Though if you are following a paleo diet, you’ll really enjoy this book. I love that all of the recipes contain whole ingredients and are easy to prepare, with variations to suit your taste buds." -Unshelled Blog "To be honest, I didn't know much about paleo (other than it is healthy) and was thrilled to find a big list of recipes that look delicious! This broccoli slaw I particularly love because it has a nice crunch and the dressing gives it good flavor. The almonds and pancetta give it a nice protein boost, and I didn't have to turn on the oven to make it! It would be perfect to bring to a picnic or summer potluck.” -Tag & Tibby MEGAN FLYNN PETERSON is the writer behind Freckled Italian―the popular lifestyle blog that focuses on life, love, literature, and lots of food. Good for BOTH paleo and clean eating!

I LOVE. THIS. BOOK. 3-4 years ago, Megan was actually the one who got me into paleo. I had a weird relationship with the diet, mainly because I was always tempted by paleo "frankenfoods" - ie. brownies made with coconut flour and pancakes made with arrowroot. They were, quite frankly, disgusting and nothing near the original. It made me leave the diet and, while I've always tied to eat healthier, I could never find a diet, or recipes I loved as much as paleo. But this book? This book solves all of those problems. It puts easy to make, flavorful and interesting dishes that aren't complicated right in the palm of your hand.

Megan organizes the book into 15 different "staples" of the Paleo diet. These include protein like pork, chicken, eggs and beef as well as side dishes including brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes and beets. Throughout the book, there are "Paleo pairings" helping you pick out what the best side dishes are for certain proteins and vice versa. Additionally, each recipe has two variations that you can use - making the dish interchangeable and full of variety.

The good part about this is none of these recipes include some of these paleo "frankenfoods" - they're straight-forward and clean. I'm ALWAYS on the internet looking for new recipes and I was truly surprised to realize that I hadn't seen most of these recipes before! So, if you're nervous about buying a cookbook with recipes you can just find online, then don't be. The recipes are clean, healthy and flavorful and you probably won't even notice that you are eating "paleo" (and you can even add in some non-paleo recipes easily if you want, like rice and soy sauce). Seriously, these recipes will pay you back in dividends - there is so much variety!

I would highly recommend this book! I was NOT given a free copy for this review - I bought it and truly love it.

Good source of inspiration if you've gained one too many L.B.s!

My boyfriend and I have tried the anti-paleo diet for the last year, which involves stuffing your face with as much sugar, dairy and pasta as possible and never leaving the couch. Delicious, but now none of our clothes fit. This book is a great inspiration for us to get back into cooking and following a healthier lifestyle. Lots of delicious options using some of my favorite meats and veggies! Megan's book offers practical recipes for anyone interested in eating healthier, paleo or not. I'll miss you though, non-paleo brownies.

Buy the eBook too!!!!!!!!!

I've already reviewed the paperback version of this book, which I highly recommend. The eBook version is one I'm particularly happy I also purchased. Why? I'll always want a "true" book in my hands, but there's only one critique I'd level at the paperback version, and that is that the pages in it are tight; there's just no way to easily fold it open to the recipe being prepared. I set my iPad, with the recipe pictured, on the counter where the dish was being prepped and assembled, and that worked out perfectly. This extra 99¢ purchase really paid off!

Excellent for those new to paleo

These recipes are ideal for my new-to-paleo family. Knowing what the 15 key paleo foods are, I can buy, say, a bunch of kale at the store and feel confident I can come up with something decent for dinner.

Really like the variations of each recipe

I love the layout of this book and the recipes! My biggest complaint is I wish it was bigger and had more pictures. There are 15 chapters:
1) eggs
2) chicken
3) beef
4) pork
5) fish
6) shrimp
7) cauliflower
8) kale
9) broccoli
10) zucchini
11) beets
12) Brussels sprouts
13) squash
14) mushroom
15) sweet potatoes

There are also serval pages of pantry basic recipes that include Paleo mayo and BBQ sauce to name a couple. Most of the recipes are easy, have minimal ingredients, and have variations of the recipe. The book does lay out some Paleo basics if your just getting started.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review or influenced in terms of my review. This book is perfect for a good variety of recipes. I'm looking forward to trying the beet and citrus salad, sausage and kale soup, and the mahi mahi with mango- peach salsa. This would also make a great gift also!

Great starter book for Paleo

We are a normal unhealthy family but now try 1 recipe a week. Our favorite is the roasted cauliflower and cherry tomatoes. What I really like is a Paleo diet is pretty cheap. And the easy to prepare.

I like how it is divided by key ingredient rather than breakfast, entree, etc.

I'm really trying to eat Paleo, and every Paleo cook book I get has little different quirks in each. None have spouted the same logic or ingredients, mainly the potato argument. Some say no potatoes of any kind, some say only sweet potatoes (as in this book), and other say you can have any potato. Fortunate for me, I'm not big on potatoes, but I do crave a sweet one every now and then, so sweet potatoes being one of the 15 fundamental ingredient is ok by me.
The 15 ingredients include eggs, beef, chicken, pork, fish, shrimp, cauliflower, kale, broccoli, zucchini, beets, brussel sprouts, squash, mushrooms and sweet potatoes. So out of the 150 recipes in the book, each one will have at least one of these 15 ingredients in them. Each recipe starts off with a blurb from the author about she loves the recipe, how she dolls it up, and her special tweaks to them. Then it also lists servings, prep time, cook time, if its an under 30 minute recipe, if its dairy or nut free, prep tips, variations, and paleo pairs.
This book doesn't have many pictures (I eat with my eyes), and it doesn't have the nutritional value for the recipes, both of which I really appreciate when they are provided, so hence I took off one star.

Healthy and Delicious Recipes with a Personal Touch!

Love Megan's personal explanation and description before each recipe that really explains how to incorporate each dish in everyday life. If only we could get our final dishes to look at beautiful as her photography. She even gave us the courage to go from just chicken breasts to buying, cooking, and eating a whole chicken and using the leftovers for bone broth.

A healthy Paleo diet and lifestyle doesn't see so challenging when you have so many delicious recipes at your disposal!!
