Description

Praise for Lilian Jackson Braun and the Cat Who series “A master of mystery.”— People “Upbeat prose and amiable characters.”— Publishers Weekly “The mix of crime and cats [is] catnip to readers who like both.”— Chicago Sun-Times “Braun keeps both paws on the side of charming.”— Los Angeles Times The history of Lilian Jackson Braun is perhaps as exciting and mysterious as her novels. Between 1966 and 1968, she published three novels to critical acclaim: The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern ,xa0and The Cat Who Turned On and Off .xa0 In 1966,xa0the New York Times labeled Braun, “the new detective of the year.” Then, for reasons unknown, the rising mystery author disappeared from the publishing scene. It wasn’t until 1986 that Berkley Publishing Group reintroduced Braun to the public with the publication of an original paperback, The Cat Who Saw Red . Within two years, Berkley released four new novels in paperback and reprinted the three mysteries from the sixties. Since then, G.P. Putnam’s Sons has published seventeen additional novels in the Cat Who series. Braun passed away in 2011.

The Cat Who Had Little To Say

While I am addicted to the Cat Who series and wish only that there were some that I had not yet read, 14 Tales was a great disappointment. I found it overly sentimental and cloying. There were few stories that seemed worthy of Ms. Braun's time and talents as a writer. The great strength of Ms. Braun's books is her hero Jim Quilleran and the amusing cast of characters who inhabit his world. Picking up a new Cat Who (or rereading one already read) is something like revisiting an old friend. There is no such sense in the Tales. It is the only work of Ms. Braun's to which I would not wish to return.

Someone call the ASPCA!

I'll begin by saying prior to this, I never met a "Cat Who..." I didn't like. Ms. Braun is a very entertaining author, and she has imagined some very entertaining cats. I suspect that I'm not the only one out there who's drawn to her work largely because of her highly entertaining cats. If you are like me in this respect, and you prefer your cats alive and well, skip this somewhat disturbing collection.
Some of the stories are a little odd, but that's not unexpected. What is unexpected is the series of cat murders (throttled cats, cats pushed to their deaths), cat suicides (kitties throwing themselves under cars, eating poisonous plants), cat abuse... I was listening to this book on cd in the car and finally had to stop it before it ended-- it was upsetting me too much!
So maybe it's ridiculous of me to care more about feline characters than human ones, but I'd prefer not to see the chalk outlines being drawn around fuzzy little body after fuzzy little body. If you're similarly ridiculous, leave this book on the shelf!

Not a book for cat lovers - terrible addition to cat who series.

If you like the other Cat Who books, avoid this one!!!

I love the cat who series and Mrs. Braun's writing. However, this book is no where near the caliber of her previous stories.

Only 1 of the 14 short stories has a positive ending. The other 13 end in DEATH of the cat or worse. I could absolutely not believe when a cat was thrown from a window to its death. I am a cat lover expecting to read books about cats in a happy setting. What I got was stories about cats being abused, killed, beaten, kicked, and poisoned. I am appalled this was included in her Cat Who series - very disappointing.

I can handle the deaths in the regular cat who books, since they are humans, and usually not personal or related to Qwilleran. But killing off the cats that the story is about is devastating to the reader.

I had nightmares for days after reading the short stories. Nightmares that included the deaths of my cats, who are like children.

Seriously, if you have any love for cats, just avoid this book.

NOT disappointing...

I AM a fan of The Cat Who series ... a big fan ... and I am not in the least disappointed with this book. I enjoyed all of these short stories very much. I especially enjoyed Phut Phat Concentrates. Very cute and reminds me of my cats. I read this one to my husband and now we joke about our cats when they stare at us. Lilian Jackson Braun is a great writer and it shows in this book because she does not need to rely on Qwill, Koko and Yum Yum to have a hit!

Great collection of books !!!

I have all of Ms Braun's books. She does a great job of writing. Love all the character names she invented. Every book has several mysteries for Quilleran, Koko and Yum Yum, his Siamese cats, to solve. I will read them all over and over. Each time I'll get to know the characters and the plots better. I would advise getting The Cat Who Companion book with your first order. It lists all the characters with a full description.

Disappointment

This is the only book by this author which is too goofy and boring to finish. It is not part of the Qwilleran series which is not revealed in the descriptive write-ups.

It's okay

Not up to Brauns standard. Some stories obviously during Brauns early years of writing and not quite capturing her wit and charm of her other Cat Who books.
