Features & Highlights

  • With a new introduction from best-selling author Ann Patchett, this National Book Award–winning story collection is one of the great works of twentieth-century American literature.
  • Eudora Welty wrote novels, novellas, and reviews over the course of her long career, but the heart and soul of her literary vision lay with the short story, and her National Book Award–winning
  • Collected Stories
  • confirmed her as a master of short fiction. The forty-one pieces collected in this new edition, written over a period of three decades, showcase Welty’s incredible dexterity as a writer. Her style seamlessly shifts from the comic to the tragic, from realistic portraits to surrealistic ones, as she deftly moves between folklore and myth, race and history, family and farce, and the Mississippi landscape she knew so well, her wry wit and keen sense of observation always present on the page.

Not my thing

The book came on time and is well-written, in good condition... I just heard mention of the author on Jeopardy yesterday that it was well-received by more than the reviewer that recommended it to me. But It just isn't working for me. I think it's written for women as so many of the characters are women and I've since realized that the review section that used to do me well is now written by a woman recommending women's books I don't like either.

Short stories have long lasting effects

While o haven’t read all of these stories, Eudora Welty left us a dynamic legacy of literature. Be sure to have a dictionary at your side. She is a master of the English language.

William Faulkner said . . .

To understand the world you've got to understand a place like Mississippi. Eudora Welty will help you with that.

My Copy is a Misprint

My book copy starts at page 279 and the actual beginning is in the middle.. if possible i would like a refund or a different copy, unless it’s an issue for this edition in general. It was quite a disappointment :(

Work of a master essayist...

I'm probably not a good person to review anything written by Eudora Welty as I am a longtime fan. She is engaging on a level that takes me out of time and place. I cannot recommend this trove of excellence more highly.
