Publishers Weekly
In the riveting follow-up to her acclaimed debut novel, Colette Freedman explores the aftermath of infidelity from three different perspectives--husband, wife, and mistress.
The end of an affair may be only the beginning. . .
Over the course of one tumultuous Christmas Eve, Kathy Walker confirmed her suspicions about her husband's affair, confronted his mistress, Stephanie, and saved her marriage. She and Robert have eighteen years, two teenagers, and a film production business between them--plus a bond that Kathy has no intention of giving up on. Yet though Robert is contrite, Kathy can't quite silence her doubts. While Robert reels from his wife's ultimatum and his mistress's rejection, Stephanie makes a discovery: she's pregnant. Her resolve to stay away from Robert wavers now that they could make a real family together. And in the days that follow, Stephanie, Robert, and Kathy must each reckon with the intricate realities of desire, the repercussions of betrayal, and the secrets that, once revealed, ripple through lives and relationships in thoroughly unexpected ways.

One of the most awful pieces of fiction I have ...
One of the most awful pieces of fiction I have ever read. I'm actually surprised that it was even published. The characters were superficial, disengaged, and not all that interesting. The fact that the story was presented THREE times, almost word for word, is lazy and inexcusable. And the ending is a joke.
As far as the repeat of the story line? I honestly thought my Kindle was backtracking to earlier pages. Seriously....what writer does this?!
The book = a complete mess.

Not credible at all
C'mon, seriously, who in their right mind would believe this story or find it credible. Yes i know its fiction, but even fiction has to make sense to keep the reader reading. The x wife ends up holding the mistress in her arms and not only comforting her over her pregnancy, but assures her she will be there for her and they will bring up this baby together and her teenage children will be the mistresses babysitter. Oh and i forgot they will take over the business TOGETHER! The husband is out of the picture completely! Geez, I don't know where the author hails from, but i doubt this outcome would happen anywhere( maybe California??) I have to say the Affair held my attention, this book just went spiraling out of control with the ending....made no sense with the wife's prior behavior.

When the End is Really just the beginning
A huge fan of Freedman's The Affair, I read this the day it arrived. Fast paced and compelling, it continues Robert, Kathy and Stephanie's story (although it works as a stand alone novel as well). I will not spoil the ending, but it is a wonderful surprise...not exactly what one would expect in a book like this. The ancillary characters remained strong and the story did not disappoint.

You will never guess .... please don't try to guess.... Just go with it!
Ok yes, the book was in my mailbox when I got home from work. I read while I ate dinner. I read while I did laundry. I read until midnight. I got up early this morning and finished the book at 7 am. I loved reading this and I especially loved the ending! And I won't spoil it for you. The book is easy to read, easy to visualize, and a smart contemplation of the havoc wrought by both affairs and their consequences while never losing the sense of being upbeat and hopeful. (I liked this even more than the first book - The Affair - and it's important to read that one first.)

MDE in MKE
I was happy to see my city, Milwaukee, play a part in Colette Freedman's THE CONSEQUENCES, a follow-up to her book, THE AFFAIR. Learning about the connections of three people who tell the same story from their own vantage point was great fun. Ms. Freedman gets right into the psyche of the characters and helps us understand their perspectives. Insightful, interesting, well-written and a satisfying ending all contribute to the strengths of this book. The author surely understands relationships and how to describe them. Kudos to Colette Freedman. I will continue to watch for her books and plays.

“The Consequences” by Colette Freedman is wonderful!!!
After “The Affair” there had to be more! Was it possible for Kathy and Robert Walker to start over? I hadn’t realized just how much Stephanie loved Robert until the very end of “The Affair”. “The Consequences” begins with Stephanie’s story moments after the confrontation in her condo with Kathy and Robert on Christmas Eve night. She is devastated. Stephanie is a young, smart, career-minded woman who has climbed to the top in business. In her opening segment she leaves Boston to spend Christmas with her family in Milwaukee. Since her success and her 18 month affair with Robert she had not spent very much time in the city where she was raised. There is something about those Midwest values that surface in hard times. It doesn’t take long to learn that Stephanie is pregnant. There is something about having the first segment! In a matter of minutes it feels as though I have known Stephanie forever. It was the same feeling I had for Kathy's first segment in “The Affair”. Robert’s segment is next. He is a wreck. In addition to dealing with Kathy about his affair with Stephanie, he is trying to reach out to Stephanie, but cannot find her (even though he has promised Kathy he would never speak to Stephanie again) and, his dear friend, Jimmy, is taken to the hospital on Christmas day after having a heart attack. And, of course, it only gets worse when he finally hears from Stephanie that he is about to become a father. Kathy’s story is last. She knows very quickly that just because Robert has come back to her, things just aren’t that simple. She is much more calm and deliberate in this book. The dialogue overlaps in each of the segments as it did in “The Affair”. I love the perspective this has on each of the characters. I was torn. I couldn’t put the book down, but I didn’t want it to end. The ending was a wonderful surprise!

Quickly absorbs the reader's attention
This follow up to The Affair once again grabs the reader's interest quickly and moves directly to the heart of the story: presenting all three sides of the affair and its aftermath. I couldn't put it down until I reached its surprising finale. Now I will just have to hope that Freedman can continue on to create another installment in the series!

Worthwhile on many levels
Great follow up to "The Affair" - "The Consequences" is insightful, beautiful, grounded in real relationships, both tragic and hopeful. I read it in a couple of days, couldn't put it down. Worthwhile on many levels: besides being a fast, fun read, hearing the story from different perspectives really got me thinking outside of myself. It also made me ponder my values, my priorities, my relationships. Definitely check it out!
