A great resource
I also borrowed this book from the library and now I'm definately going to buy it! It gives all the basics like most other books, but the sections on crocheting garments and shaping makes it stand out for me. The clear directions and photos were what I needed to help me get over my apprehension of crocheting a sweater. And a correction to the previous review - there is a "Yarn Detail" section in the back of the book that lists the yarns and colors used in the projects in the book.
Overall, this is a must-have for any crochet library.

Lovely Book
I saw this book on Amazon, but decided to check it out from the library first to preview it before buying it. I'm very pleased with. The photography is lovely, and the directions seem very clear. It has a wealth of crochet tips and instructions, along with a stitch guide. Unlike most other stitch guides however, it also has patterns - 30 of them. My only complaint is that the patterns do not list the actual brand of yarn used - they'll just say for example, "lightweight cotton/microfiber yarn". Addionally, it also only gives the weight of the skeins (3 grams, for example) rather than listing the actual yardage. As yarn can vary greatly in weight, that isn't much help with determing how much yarn is needed for a project. Overall however, I really like the book, and plan to purchase it soon.

Don't waste your money
I have been crocheting for many years and own several crochet books. I took a look at this one at a local bookstore to gain ideas for new stiches/projects. Take a look at the inside of the book that amazon provides. The author teaches you how to make the basic stitches...but they are labeled completely wrong! She uses English crochet terms instead of American crocet terms...they are not equivelant. For example, she calls a single crochet a "double," a double crochet a "treble" and a half-double crochet a "half-treble crochet." DO NOT learn american crochet from this book. You will mess up numerous patterns and have to re=learn your stiches and reading patterns. If you want an excelent crochet "bible" that will show you various types of stiches purchase "The Crochet Stich Bible" by Betty Barnden instead.

The Crochet Bible by Sue Whiting
This book arrived in great shape and on time. It is a comprehensive and easy to understand book on crochet techniques. It starts you out easy, with beginning instructions and moves you into more decorative ways to use your hook. Then it gives a library of stitches and about 24 projects to work on if you so desire. It is a good book to have that will help grow your skills in crochet.

Awesome book!
I borrowed this book from the local library, and renewed a couple of times too.
It was such a benefit to have, so I had to order it and add to my home collection.
It's been a while since I had done any crochet, and needed to make a baby blanket...or two.
This book's instructions were easy to follow, with several different stitches to learn, and a picture of each stitch in block photos.
It has a wide variety of things one could crochet, from baby booties and hat, mittens, sweaters, a stuffed bunny, adult hats, shawl, a really cool looking Peruvian style bag, child's sweater, and the list goes on.
Sue Whiting has a few books out. This one is a keeper.
I always try to borrow books from the library first, so I know if it's what I am looking for, and I don't end up with something that doesn't suit my needs.
This truly is a great book, and I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in it.

crocheting fun
This book was quite helpful with learning the basic techniques. I did have to reference the videos on the internet for some additional how-to help, but for the most part this book does a good job of showing a beginner how to work the different stitches. My favorite part is the stitch reference at the back of the book. It explains and reviews all of the stitches in the book and patterns, so it is a quick way to refresh your memory or get creative with adding your own flair to a piece. I also think that the book has a good mix (including hats, belts, shawls, stuffed animals, scarves, mittens, sweaters, etc) of beginner and easy level patterns. I also appreciated the combination of real picture images and drawn diagram images for showing the different techniques- it is a good way to break the instruction down. On the whole, I would purchase this book again.

great crochet resource
I got this book from the library and knew I needed to own it. Have used directions for adding an edge to my drapes. The book is easy to understand and very helpful for crocheters. It's also fun just to read through it. No book is complete on any subject but this one is a must for any crocheter to own.
