A Great Framework for Literacy Instruction!
I think many reviewers are confused about the purpose for this book. The Daily 5 is not a curriculum. It is a literacy framework. A person cannot find all of the information to successfully implement The Daily 5 on Pinterest or Teachers Pay teachers. I would HIGHLY recommend that all teachers who are interested in implementing The Daily 5 read this book. Highlight, tab, underline, and write in the margins, because this book will be your go-to resource. I have been using it for 6 years (in kindergarten and 2nd grade classrooms), and I have always followed the recommended launching schedule. I am very strict when building stamina, and my students thrive on this structure. I have had classrooms with high populations of students with behavior concerns and/or students in special education, and The Daily 5 has truly worked wonders in my classroom. The structure has allowed me to easily differentiated, while meeting with small groups. (I am very very rarely interrupted by students while meeting with a group!) My main reason for purchasing the 2nd edition of this book was to read more about Math Daily 3, which I will be implementing this school year. There is also a lot of updated information on Daily 5.

Worth every cent, including the shipping cost! :)
Looking for a way to give your students more independent reading time in a way that holds them accountable, but without putting a whole heap of extra "busy work" marking on your desk. That's what I was doing, and several teachers recommended Daily 5. I waited for the 2nd edition to be released, and in some ways I'm glad I did, but at the same time I am wishing I read this several months ago. I'm now re-reading it, at a slower pace, and thinking about how I can implement it in my classroom next year (with only 8 weeks left this year it's not going to happen this year).
Daily 5 is NOT a language arts curriculum or program as such. It is really a way of managing the classroom, by fostering independence. This book is so well written, that I read the whole book, cover to cover, within 3 days of receiving it. It is clear, easy to read, with practical tips, sample lesson plans, lots of photos, and suggestions for different ways to use Daily 5.
I think my only reservation about this book is that, throughout the book, there are many references to "CAFE", which is another books that provides more information on the assessment and teaching processes that are usually used concurrently with Daily 5. Sadly, because I really want a hard copy for day to day reference, I'm going to have to wait another month to receive it (I'm in Cambodia). I'd strongly recommend the authors consider producing a single book with information about Daily 5 and CAFE in the one book.
To finish on a positive note, the bonus in the 2nd edition is the inclusion of "Math Daily 3", which takes the principles of Daily 5 and applies them to mathematics teaching and learning. Thank you "two sisters".

It only took me 17 years to find a program as effective as the Daily 5 :-)
18 yr teacher here! If your goal is to foster independence in your classroom, provide your students with meaningful ELA instead of busy work and provide your students with more choice in their learning then the D5 is for you. First year using this model with last year's 2nd graders and I can't do it again. The "Read to Self" (aka Quiet Reading, SSR, etc.) model alone works better than any strategy I've ever tried. You really do need to read the book but you really don't have to try to fully implement your first year. You can tailor it to meet your style but I recommend you really do try to follow the steps outlined each time you implement a new component. This is a management system that truly works and the kids love it! This is the first time I was actually able to meet with small groups for 20-30 minutes with almost no interruptions. Note that it took at least a month to get there but once you have your students used to the routine it is kind of magical.

5 Stars for Daily 5
I'm a 1st grade teacher who has been interested in implementing the Daily 5 for over a year. I have read several blogs about The Daily 5 so I was already familiar with it prior to purchasing the book. I bought the book before attending The Daily 5 and Math Daily 3 Conference but I felt that the book was so detailed and clearly written that I could've implemented this in my classroom without having attended the conference. I loved it so much that I recommended that my entire 1st grade team reads the book over the summer so that we can all implement The Daily 5 next school year! If you have been interested in implementing The Daily 5 but don't know where to begin, I high recommend getting this book!

Think before buying
This book is good for anyone who wants to get really deep into the Daily 5 and set it up like it was intended to be. I used the Daily 5 my first year of teaching, without the book. The book gives good insight into setting up, explaining, and what to do during the D5. I really think that you could set it up without the book. I got the book because I truly thought it would have great ides, but I was slightly disappointed. If you are on the fence, you could do some research on TPT and some blogs before buying.

Get to the Point!
I've read five chapters of this book. To tell the truth, I'm getting aggravated. There are many good techniques explained in this book, but there are many redundancies also. I keep getting the feeling I've read something again, and again, and again. This book probably could be summed up in 5 or 6 full pages. I hate filler books. Get to the point and stop wasting my time.

and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately
I was looking forward to this book, and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately, the information regarding literacy instruction is shallow and patched from many other sources. It is very heavy on classroom management techniques. While it might be just right for teachers new to working with younger students, it is somewhat condescending for more experienced literacy teachers. There are many other resources available to explain higher quality instructional techniques.

Bought for the math chapter!
Attended the Daily 5 training in Las Vegas, bought the second edition for the math chapter. Not dissappointed. Math info is not extremely specific but enough to build a good structured math classroom.

Valuable Resource for Literacy Teachers
The Daily 5 is an excellent program for classroom yeachers to follow in order to promote independence and ownership of improving the reading and writing skills of her students. In this manual, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser outline the five choices involved in the Daily 5 classroom that are designed to help each student achieve her very best in reading and writing: reading to the self, read to someone else, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work. Together, these authors describe the best ways to introduce this program to your class and how to maintain it. This is a program that leads to success.

Amazing Book for implementing Daily 5
This book provides both the basis for implementing Daily 5 in your classroom as well as the understanding behind why it is such a wonderful way to foster reading engagement and independence. I'm a relatively new teacher and I was having serious behavior problems during guided reading group time. I am so excited to implement this in my classroom this year. Don't mistake this for a substitute for teaching the standards, but instead take it as it is supposed to be, a management guide for reading independence. Yes many of the supplies and different activities are posted on blogs and teacherspayteachers, but it was so vital for me to actually read this book!! It really impacted the way I looked at the Daily 5 concept and the mistakes I was making in my classroom. Get this book. I promise if you go into expecting the right things you will in no way be disappointed.
