Features & Highlights

  • A kingpin willing to murder to protect his dark web drug empire. A corrupt government official determined to avoid exposure. The death of a dark web drugs czar in mysterious circumstances in a Bangkok jail cell, just as the author arrives there. A death in Minnesota leads detectives into the world of dark web murder-for-hire where hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bitcoin is paid to arrange killings, beatings, and rapes. Meanwhile, the owner of the most successful hitman website in history is threatening the journalists who investigate his business with a visit from his operatives—and the author is at the top of his list. There's the world wide web—the internet we all know that connects us via news, email, forums, shopping, and social media. Then there's the dark web—the parallel internet accessed by only a select few. Eileen Ormsby has spent the past five years exploring every corner of the Dark Web. She has shopped on darknet markets, contributed to forums, waited in red rooms, and been threatened by hitmen on murder-for-hire sites. This book will take you into the murkiest depths of the web's dark underbelly: a place of hitmen for hire, red rooms, hurtcore sites, and markets that will sell anything a person is willing to pay for—including another person.

Must Read

I'm generally a fan of true crime and stories about the dark web and was unhappy to find that my library offered little to nothing in way of my latter interest. I turned to Amazon to find this specific book based on a screenshot from reddit and am so pleased I did! Eileen Ormsby is a fantastic writer who reports on terrible and fascinating happenings online with tact, respect, and admirable relentlessness. The book is well written and even has multiple warnings for the heavier sections, which I truly appreciated. I loved it so much that I purchased two more of Ormsby's books and am waiting eagerly for them!

If you are even mildly curious about the dark web I 100% recommend this book, you will NOT be disappointed!

Couldn’t put it down

Picked this book up after getting lost in some Reddit threads about the dark web— put it down two days later after plowing through a part and a half everyday. Ormsby does the work so the reader doesn’t have to; it’s fascinating to discern between fact and fiction based on what we hear commonly spread about the dark web. Very informative and interesting read!

Totally enthralling, couldn’t put it down

I started reading this the weekend of Memorial Day and I couldn’t put it down; by Monday - Memorial Day proper - I had finished it. Eileen Ormsby’s journalistic approach make both informative & entertaining work out of some incredibly intriguing & disturbing topics, some of which are well beyond the bounds of deeply upsetting. Whilst this book may not be for the faint of heart, as some of the criminal activity covered is nearly impossible to stomach - she deploys said details, heartbreaking as they are, without exploitative or gratuitous manipulation. This is the first book by Ormsby I’ve read, but I’ll be picking up her other titles. Even if true crime/nonfiction isn’t necessarily your thing, you’ll likely enjoy this as the stories therein are about as wild as any story, fiction or non, could be. Ormsby did some truly spectacular research to compose this, exposing a dark side of our modern internet infused lives. Recommended! PS: FREE ROSS ULBRICHT!
