Description

"Terrible secrets, the sweep of history, an epic canvas, breathless action...nobody--and I mean nobody--does this stuff better than Rollins." -- Lee Child"James Rollins delivers one of the best thrillers of the year in The Devil Colony, an amazing amalgam of history, science and adventure." -- Associated Press on The Devil Colony"Riveting....Rollins gets better with each book, and his position at the top of this particular subgenre remains unshaken." -- Publishers Weekly on The Devil Colony"From the hidden Indian treasure, to the Fort Knox secrets, to the conspiracy at the beginning of the United States The Devil Colony gives you every reason why you'll want to be a member of Sigma Force." -- Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle on The Devil Colony"A first-class, breathtaking adventure that will have readers whizzing through the pages. The only thing wrong with this tale: it has to end." -- Romantic Times (4 1/2 stars) on The Devil Colony About James Rollins JAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins' knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world. The Critics Rave The New York Times says that his "roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel's science, history and geography." Rollins' rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that "After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man."NPR calls his work "adventurous and enormously engrossing..." and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: "If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large....All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker." The Story Teller's Story As a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters. Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart. Explosive Page-Turning Adventures The exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.) From the Inside Flap From New York Times bestselling author James Rollins comes a novel of boundless imagination and meticulous research, a book that dares to answer a frightening question at the heart of America: Could the founding of the United States be based on a fundamental lie? The shocking truth lies hidden within the ruins of an impossibility, a lost colony of the Americas vanished in time and cursed into oblivion. A place known only as The Devil Colony.Deep in the Rocky Mountains, a gruesome discovery--hundreds of mummified bodies--stirs international attention and fervent controversy. Despite doubts about the bodies' origins, the local Native American Heritage Commission lays claim to the prehistoric remains, along with the strange artifacts found in the same cavern: gold plates inscribed with an unfathomable script.During a riot at the dig site, an anthropologist dies horribly, burned to ashes in a fiery explosion in plain view of television cameras. All evidence points to a radical group of Native Americans, including one agitator, a teenage firebrand who escapes with a vital clue to the murder and calls on the one person who might help--her uncle, Painter Crowe, Director of Sigma Force. To protect his niece and uncover the truth, Painter will ignite a war among the nation's most powerful intelligence agencies. Yet an even greater threat looms as events in the Rocky Mountains have set in motion a frightening chain reaction, a geological meltdown that threatens the entire western half of the U.S.From the volcanic peaks of Iceland to the blistering deserts of the American Southwest, from the gold vaults of Fort Knox to the bubbling geysers of Yellowstone, Painter Crowe joins forces with Commander Gray Pierce to penetrate the shadowy heart of a dark cabal, one that has been manipulating American history since the founding of the thirteen colonies. But can Painter discover the truth--one that could topple governments--before it destroys all he holds dear? ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE DEVIL COLONY "Terrible secrets, the sweep of history, an epic canvas, breathless action...nobody--and I mean nobody--does this stuff better than Rollins." -- Lee Child on The Devil Colony"From the hidden Indian treasure, to the Fort Knox secrets, to the conspiracy at the beginning of the United States The Devil Colony gives you every reason why you'll want to be a member of Sigma Force." -- Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Inner Circle on The Devil Colony PRAISE FOR JAMES ROLLINS AND THE SIGMA FORCE NOVELS "Rollins does his job: thrills promised, then delivered" -- Tampa Tribune"James Rollins is a master of international action intrigue" -- Richmond Times-Dispatch"Rollins combines real-world science with high-octane action to create rousing stories of adventure that are as exciting as any movie" -- Chicago Sun-times"This guy doesn't write novels-he builds roller coasters...Rollins excels at combining action and history with larger-than-life characters...A must for pure action fans." -- Booklist"Rollins effortlessly blends science and superstition in the grand tradition of Clive Cussler and David Morrell." -- Providence Journal James Rollins is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers. It has been a long time since I read somthing so bad

I have read bad books in my life, but this one gets the prize. Too many characters with strange names. Too many locales to get lost and so poorly planned, you have to rewind to find out where you are coming from. I could not continue after ½ of the book as I could not identify who was talking to whom and where at.
I purchased another 2 books of the same author which I'm returning as I don't want to fight the book to find out where am I and what I'm doing.

Sorry, but I have never given a negative review to a book, as I rather hold back and not write about it.

I just wanted to warn other readers about it, before they would find they wasted a couple of days reading and spent good money on a bad book..

Decent story, OK narrator

I ended up getting this in audiobook format because recently I've gotten rather fond of listening to narrations of the text. It lends a new level to the reading and sometimes makes it easier to sink into the novel. (Well, except for when you're driving. Only so much sinking you can do then!)

I have to say that while I did enjoy Fernandez's voice, I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed at times. He does a good job of keeping his general narrator voice the same (no big fluctuations or whatnot), but at times it felt less like someone acting out the voices and whatnot and more like someone just reading the book aloud. It's a good narration and I did find the voice for Monk to be one of the standouts, but this wasn't really the best I've heard so far.

The story is good as well, having an interesting idea and some great scenes. It's just that there's so much going on here that it's a little overly busy at times. There's not a lot of "down time" with the book that allows you to kind of catch up with everything that's going on and mull it over. This can sometimes be a good thing with action novels, as you don't want to have too much down time, but when you have the action cutting between the two main groups and a few minor sub-groups, it can get to be a bit much at times.

As usual though, the shining jewel lies in Rollins's imagination in creating potential "what if" scenarios based around historical myths, legends, and the like. No matter what the flaws were in this book, I couldn't help but want to keep listening/reading to discover what would become of everything. I suppose that in the end, that's all that one could really ask for in a novel. This might not be a "must buy" for every person out there, but it's worth a listen for fans of the series. (If you haven't picked up anything in the series, don't start with this book. You have to know the back story in order to know all of what is going on.)
