Disgusted!

I enjoyed the story until the(wet noodle)heroine went off with the slug(husband) and IMMEDIATELY forgave him for everything he had done to her. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because of the Spanish baron Andres who was handsome, charming and very much in love with the wet noodle. It is refreshing to find the 'other man' actually having all good qualities. This was one story where I was cheering for the other guy. Wouldn't it have been nice if she stuck to her guns and stayed with Andres? It certainly would have been a more interesting story. I hope if Ms. Maxwell writes Andres' story she will give him a heroine that is worthy of him.

Bad, Bad, Bad

It has all been said before me on every one star review here! So I won't repeat any of it, they all did a GR8 Job!!!!!
I liked Andres as the hero, and did not like Wright at all (a user)! I didn't like Gillian either (with not a brain in her head!
I have read other Cathy Maxwell book (also 1 star books) you think I would have learned! I would love to read about Andres in a book in the future but it would have to be written by another author! This is my very last Cathy Maxwell!

Engaging

I just don't understand all the hate towards this book. Yes, I understand rooting for Andres at the beginning of the story, because we always dislike the husband who has a not-so-secret mistress. But I think Ms. Maxwell took time developing the love between Gillian and Brian. No, they weren't madly in love in the carriage scene, but it was the beginning of them trusting each other. It was a cute and sweet romance and I appreciate the fact that she didn't go on and on with sex scenes like some historical authors do and instead focused on the flow of the plot. We can get plenty of sex with the abundance of erotica novels out there, but Cathy gave us a good old-fashioned love story!

Just When You Think An Earl Couldn't Do Any Worse

This book was an excellent read. It was very difficult to put this book down.

Surely in today's modern society most if not all wives would not accept their husbands' return after having been abandoned the day after your wedding so that your husband can go off and live with his mistress, to then disappear into a war with Napoleon's troops and one day four years later, he calls for you and requests your return to the marriage. The plot alone engages the reader into finding out how in the world a woman will take back her husband and manage to fall in love again after such unfathomnable betrayal. In this book, readers experience the growth and maturing that these two characters go through in order for one to forgive and respect the other. Let's face it, it's easy to say that these characters are unrealistic and how stupid the wife is for taking back her husband, but this book is about forgiveness and a subject matter that some marriages, even in modern times like today go through. At least this couple didn't take the easy solution of a divorce and/or annulment, and even though the rekindlement started out as a bargain, both managed to get through the toughest hurdles so that in the end, not only do they immensely love one another, but also have respect for one another. Those of us that are married know it takes more than love to hold a marriage together.

This book held itself very well from beginning to end. Some of the actions protrayed by the main characters may have been impulsive and may come across as unrealistic, but the heroine came into the marriage in love while the hero came into the marriage as a duty to his family. This book takes you well beyond the duties of long ago marriages into today's formula for strengthening and keeping one's marriage.

Bravo to the author!

"Unique, sentimental, and warm"

This was an easy read. It starts off a bit slow, but I really begin to enjoy it towards the middle. The story is very sentimental I think. If you like realistic redemption love stories, you will enjoy this one. I thought it was rather unique. I really liked the characters in this story. This is my second read by this author and I think I will be reading more of her books. This is a very soft sort of read not a lot of detailed love scenes,(which I quite enjoy very much)but I enjoyed it.

This was a likable interesting read.

Like some of the other reviewers that liked the book versing those that did not, my vote was it was a good and interesting read. There could have been a little more romance, but it seemed Gillian was too busy denying her love for her husband because of the hurt he caused her immediately after their wedding by confessing that he loved his mistress. And the Earl, Ransom, who needed his wife after finding that he had made the mistake of his life by foolishly believing his mistress was sincere with her feelings. Ransome was discovering that he was falling in love with the wife he had treated so badly and each of the characters, as in all romance novels, sufferered their own doubts, which prevented them from relaying their true feelings.

The the diverse reviews just goes to show why so many recommendations I have relied on, left me disappointed and others have been just right. It simply depends on what you like and perhaps what emotion/mood you are in at the time you delve into the story.

To me it was enjoyable and different.
