Bad Life Advice

I bought this book assuming it gave practical advise on how to live a simple, enjoyable life. It DOES give advice, but it's not practical or helpful...at all.

Perhaps this book is too 'new age' for me but I completely disagree with statements like, "If you want x to happen, just wish it enough and it will come true".

The book is based on this premise and it preaches the exact opposite concept of letting go and being okay with what happens; finding joy and beauty in the little things in life while understanding that struggle and suffering must be accepted; not denied.

The author rattles of anecdote after anecdote of "someone I know really wanted cash. I said a few sacred sentences and within the next few days they received it!" Really? This is the message? This is the game of life? Wishing for money and then obtaining it? Give me a break.

I finally put down the book after reading a chapter about how a woman who Shinn knew, really wanted to live in a house in her neighborhood. One day the home's owner passed away and she bought it and moved in. After asking Shinn if she was responsible for the homeowner's death Shinn said "Yes. You wanted the house too badly, and because of that, the owner died. But don't worry, your bad karma for killing the homeowner evened out because your husband died shortly after moving in." Seriously? That's you message? That's how life's game operates? Who wants to play a game like that? Who would embrace these 'rules' and choose to live their life by them? Who would accept blame of killing someone they had absolutely no control over or had a hand in?

Maybe there's something I'm not grasping. Maybe more life experience will prove these rules to be truer than I'm currently giving them credit. But as of now, I find that they'll do more harm to the person who chooses to put them into practice than any good.

So this book clearly isn't for everyone, but given the positive feedback, it seems to have helped a lot of people. Which is great. If it works for you- awesome! If you don't find it practical but want to continue your search, I suggest dipping your toes into books on Zen Buddhism or stoicism.

Be the energy you want to attract!

I listen to the audiobook almost every day. There's a lot of inspirational knowledge. If you're a person who stifles everything because you may not agree on one small aspect, you may miss out on blessings you so much need.
