Not a good read if you like Green Lantern. Nice art, okay writing, horrible GL.

I'm a casual GL fan, but a very devoted one (blame DC for not printing enough classic GL stuff). Bought this because getting ANY decent GL book is always a challenge, and I decided on giving a chance to a recent rendition. I've read this up to comic #3 and honestly, I'll force my way through it, because it's not a fun read if you're a GL fan.
This book looks very nice, it is written alright more or less, but it is definitely NOT a good rendition of the Green Lantern. The space-cop thing is taken way too literally, and I'm honestly not a fan of Hal Jordan being a literal cop. He's a super hero.
But making Jordan a cop is one thing. Making him a violent, hot-headed, vengeful cop, is taking it too far. He executes a (horrible genocidal) criminal, as an act of justice, though the criminal is neutralized and not a threat anymore, then tells the other Lanterns that "you saw it, it was self defense". That's not Hal Jordan, that's Hank Voight from Chicago PD. It could have been a decent police SF comic, but as it is, it lacks an understanding of the character, the GLC, the legacy of this series, anything.
Other than being bad GL comic, it lacks other things that a good GL story usually has - maturity, great characters, moral conflicts, emotional investment, any of those; everything is abandoned in favor of being a "cool psychadelic" comic. Ironically, GL at its best (try getting the Sector 2084 books for example) is far more than "psychadelia" - it's colorful, imaginative, AND well-written.
I give it 3 stars out of respect for the artists and the franchise, but this is by far the worst GL book I've read so far. Taking the GL part out of the equation, this is mostly forgettable.

Edit: After reading the whole thing, this is somewhat explained and justified in-universe, to say in the comic's defense. My review stands as it is though - this is a very weak incarnation of GL, relying too heavily on gimmicks, and not enough on a true understanding of the character.

Great jumping on point.

Green lantern vol 1 contains issues 1-6

Green Lantern has a lot of history and can feel a tad intimidating to read. I would say this is a pretty good place to start. I will warn you this book can be a tad goofy for people unfamiliar with The writer’s work, but it’s incredibly fun and Grant Morrison knows how to keep you interested from issue to issue. All of the issues are self contained adventures with a main story in the background. I had a blast reading it

The art is absolutely stunning. Liam Sharp is a mad genius. I included a picture of the first page. Every page is just as breathtaking as the last. After you finish this book, I would recommend reading the brave and the bold: Batman and Wonder Woman. Liam sharp also writes that story as well as draws it.

I can’t recommend this story enough. Even if it’s not your cup of tea the art is worth the price alone.
