Just OK

It’s not my favorite cookbook. I have had much better results from finding paleo and Whole30 recipes online and in other books then substituting for or eliminating non-AIP ingredients.

A pet peeve of mine: there are misspellings in the book, which you’ll notice immediately from the cover.

It's tough but likely very effective

I've been reading about the auotimmune protocol for over a year now. I get the emails and read the research and am convinced it works well to reduce inflammation. I also think it is a major commitment and life change and not very easy to do. If you suffer from autoimmune problems, not just Hashimoto's, it's probably worth a go. The recipes in here are not quick and easy and they aren't all the ingredients you likely half in your shelf. I've read you can go easily into the AIP or you can do it all at once. I don't think I'd be able to go all in at once because it is such a departure from where I am now. Also, if you have issues with garlic and lemons you might have difficulty with many of these recipes. They do look tasty and healthy. Oh, if I only had a chef to do this for me and to buy the foods. If you plan to gradually go into it you can gradually change out what's in your cabinet so there won't be such a big hit there too. I really want my thyroid to go down some and need help with other autoimmune issues so I need a program for healing just like this. The hard part will be getting there and making the change. I will update if I notice big changes - but I know they will be gradual so I have to be patient.

I bought this book because of the good reviews, but I found this book to be just ok. I mean all the information inside of it, can be found online, if you do a research.

Requires Commitment

I do not have a thyroid problem but I am interested in better health and finding ways to eat better. I have seen so many different diet plans – some of which fly in the face of what this book is all about – and making heads or tails of the information can be intimidating at best and totally discouraging at worst. This book’s author makes the purpose of this book very clear: following a Paleo dietary plan to improve thyroid health and reduce inflammation. It’s an excellent goal and there is data to support this plan, but it is a difficult (and potentially expensive) plan.

The introductory material explains in some detail about thyroid diseases, in particular Hashimoto’s. I found this material to be more interesting than I expected, and definitely has me considering thyroid health a bit more than I once did.

The Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) as it is called in this book is a plan to bring the thyroid back up to a healthy state, via dietary means. It involves eliminating certain foods (and groups of foods like nightshade vegetables) and instead emphasizing others that promote anti-inflammatory responses in the body. It introduces a set of recipes and formulas, some of which are not dissimilar to a typical diet but also some that are quite different from standard American cuisine that require less common ingredients that may be difficult to track down. This is not exactly unexpected but it does mean that following this plan requires some monetary investment in things that might not be in the pantry already.

Where this diet plan gets difficult is that it doesn’t mesh completely with many of other dietary plans out there. Some of the things to avoid are no-brainers – processed foods, seafood with high mercury content, sugars, trans-fats and the like, while allowing lean meats, fresh fruits, fermented non-dairy foods and vegetables that are not part of the nightshade family. However, for the uninitiated this plan calls for giving up beans, grains, dairy, eggs, nightshades, nuts and seeds too. That’s a brutal adjustment for some, and it also doesn’t quite match up with diets like Atkins, South Beach, low-fat, vegetarian or vegan diets. It is very specific, to eliminate inflammatory foods that can cause issues. That’s all well and good, but you should be well aware of what is required and realize that this takes some serious commitment.

This isn’t a typical diet book and should not be treated as a normal weight-loss cookbook. This book has a very special purpose and for those that need it, it will definitely help with inflammatory issues and thyroid health.

Worth a Try!

I got this cookbook for my daughter who has just been diagnosed with hypothyroid, which is a symptom of Hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune disease. She has many other symptoms as well that cause issues. She has read this book has decided to try this plan. This cookbook, written by a nutritionist and a chef, suggests eliminating certain foods from your diet for 30-90 days and then adding them slowly back in so you can determine which foods cause inflammation in your body or make you feel sick. It reminds me of other programs I have heard of for people with food sensitivities. The point, according to the authors, is that being off of foods that can make you sick, can help your body heal. I hope this will help her body heal. The book comes with explanations from the nutritionist as to her research and understanding of how this diet plan can help someone with Hashimoto's. It also comes with clear lists of foods to avoid and foods to have in your pantry. There are many recipes in the book to try. The pictures are lovely, of course, like most cookbooks. I will update once she has tried some of the recipes.

Great Cookbook

I got this for my wife who has Hashimotos and has to take levothyroxine and she wants to find a natural way to better take care of herself. The book is well thought out and insightful and includes a sample meal plan and ingredient list as well as what things to avoid. Her favorite recipe so far is the orange ginger roasted salmon. She said she recommends this book.

Wonderful book!

I love this cookbook. It's easy to read and easy to follow. It's great for everyone, even if they aren't on restrictions. There is a recipe for various meats and veggies and I love that. My only issue is that I can't decide which to cook first! I look forward to healthier eating.
