Description

"So how do we take care of ourselves? Easy. I believe The Investor's Manifesto: Preparing for Prosperity, Armageddon and Everything in Between is the shortest and most lucid explanation of index investing and simple asset allocation yet written. . . . This is a must-read book." — Scott Burns , Syndicated Columnist and Principal of Assetbuilder.com From the Inside Flap As recently as a generation or two ago, the lack of financial ability wasn't a handicap for the average person. But in today's world—where most of us have been forced to manage our own investment and retirement portfolios—it has become essential to understand the finer points of our financial life. While the meltdown of 2008–2009 has compounded the complexity of the investment landscape, timeless investment principles can help you navigate even the toughest investment terrain. That's why bestselling author William Bernstein—a grassroots hero to independent investors—has written The Investor's Manifesto. Approaching the problems of investing and saving from the perspective of someone who has had to figure it out for himself, Bernstein knows firsthand how difficult these endeavors can be—especially for those with little professional experience in this arena. Now, with the current market maelstrom as a backdrop, he skillfully describes what it takes to plan for a lifetime of investing, discussing stocks and bonds as well as the relationship between risk and return. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, The Investor's Manifesto: Explores the theoretical basis of investing and designing portfolios, drawn in large part from financial history Explores the theoretical basis of investing and designing portfolios, drawn in large part from financial history Offers insights on dealing with the emotions and attitudes that routinely cripple investors Offers insights on dealing with the emotions and attitudes that routinely cripple investors Discusses how to deal with the investment industry when executing strategies designed for anything from saving for retirement to putting a child through college Discusses how to deal with the investment industry when executing strategies designed for anything from saving for retirement to putting a child through college Addresses ways in which individual investors can construct diversified portfolios that can blunt potentially damaging market forces Addresses ways in which individual investors can construct diversified portfolios that can blunt potentially damaging market forces Covers the concept of Pascal's Wager—which will enable you to identify and avoid worst-case investing scenarios Covers the concept of Pascal's Wager—which will enable you to identify and avoid worst-case investing scenarios If there were ever a time to take control of your financial future, it is now. Brilliantly written with superb advice!

William Bernstein is a brilliant guy so it's no surprise that this book is brilliantly written. It provides the one "guarantee" I actually believe, and that is that following his advice will not make the reader fabulously wealthy. What following his advice will do, is maximize consumers' chances of living comfortably in retirement and minimize chances of living their final years in poverty.

This book isn't just about investment philosophy; it's about getting down to brass tacks. This is a practical book that goes into specific recommendations to construct portfolios. What asset classes does he recommend? Why, all of them, with different mixes for different goals. He notes, "When you minimize your expenses and diversify, you forgo bragging rights with neighbors and in-laws, but you will also minimize the chances of impoverishing yourself and the ones you love." He rightfully observes that this is "one fair trade."

Book good.

I had previously read Swenson's Unconventional Success. This book contains essentially the same advice, but is much, much more readable. The way the author connects financial history going back several millennium to practical advice on what to do with your portfolio today, was quite elegant in my opinion. I have never before read an investment book that was as helpful, entertaining and well-reasoned as this one. A welcome antidote to the buffoons on CNBC and FBN.

AN ENJOYABLE AND TOTALLY INDICATED READ.

I concede that I purchased every book that Dr. Bernstein has written, The Investor's Manifesto....being my latest purchase from amazon! Let's put it this way, this book is NOT "Fama" and it is NOT "Fabozzi", nor should it be! However, add this book to, for example, Bogle's Common Sense on Mutual Funds, 10th Anniveresary (I ordered this from amazon today!) and, say, The Little Book on Main Street Money, by Jonathan Clements, and, I think, the lion's share of us pretty much have all we (rationally!) need! Everything else that can be said about this neat book has been said in the previous reviews as far as I am concerned. Pure and simple, if you invest in mutual funds or stocks, buy this book. The price is exceptionally reasonable and it will, I trust, clearly be of enormous benefit.
Now, this is not being critical, please! The book has two (minor) typos, one that may drive some readers bonkers if they try to run the equation that is on page 31. Let me back into the two typos this way: Anyone can make a mistake, "even me"! (I edited my HP-based real estate finance books to the point of exhaustion, but I still had 4 typos in my HP-12C book! No book seems to be edited to sheer perfection!)
In the equation on page 31, the component in question more or less reads like this: D(1 + g^n)/(1 + r)^n ....
It should be: D(1 + g)^n/(1 + r)^n ....This is not a big deal as most readers will simply skip this math tid-bit. The few that might actually give it some thought may be driven up a wall, at least until they think out the equation and catch the typo.
On page 41, last line on the page, the word "investor" needs to be deleted. Obviously something went a bit haywire in the editing process.
So, we have two minor typos! It is irrelevant! The book is truly great, extremely accurate. Clearly, Dr. Bernstein is not only a gifted finance writer but as well I sincerely believe that he--like John Bogle--has the interests of his readers, clients, etc, totally at heart! Yes, I am humbled by the works of this successful/gifted author. Thanks Doctor Bernstein for all of your work in this field!

The Thinking Amateur's Guide to Investing Like a Pro

[[ASIN:0470505141 The Investor's Manifesto: Preparing for Prosperity, Armageddon, and Everything in Between]] by neurologist turned financial consumer advocate and commentator, Dr. William Bernstein. Dr. Bernstein's handy manual lets amateur investors in on many of the tricks of the trade that the smart investment strategists, mutual and hedge fund managers use to get one up on the assorted little guys of the investment world. In addition to exposing the wiles of Wall Street, Dr. Bernstein stresses the importance of building a healthy portfolio through diversification and balance, managing risk and controlling you're your emotional response to the exuberant highs and crushing lows the market dishes out. Dr. Bernstein gives advice on what kinds of stocks and commodities to invest in based on proven track records of high returns and minimal risk.

Dr. Bernstein is adamant in his claim that the markets have undergone profound and dramatic changes in the year since the government takeover of such investment giants as Bear-Sterns and Lehman Bros. Dr, Bernstein argues that these changes make it easier than ever for new and formerly skeptical investors to get involved, because they aren't prejudiced by the types of outmoded thinking that led to the tech bubble burst of the early 2000's and the more recent housing bust of the last two years. Dr. Bernstein's message is clear: the time has never been better to get in on the moneymaking game, provided that you have the right guidance--the kind of guidance `The Investor's Manifesto' provides.

Dr. Bernstein's style of writing is no frills and no-nonsense. His message is peppered with dozens of examples of past investors making the right and wrong decisions when it came to sheltering and growing their assets. If Dr. Berstein is a bull, he is a tame one. He is well known to be a strong consumer advocate with no great love for the professional trading racket.

As a former, practicing neurologist Dr. Bernstein brings a unique set of knowledge and skills to bear on understanding how an individual's own instincts can sometimes work against him or her in the investment arena. Bernstein's approach is scientific, comprehensive and farsighted. 'The Investor's Manifesto' is well-written, incisive and complete. A great pick!

Reading Bernstein's 'Manifesto' I was reminded of another great book that came out recently on how to make smart investment moves with an eye toward a secure retirement. Thomas Scott's [[ASIN:0982411715 Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt: What A Fatal Plane Crash Taught Me About Retirement Planning]] is very similar in style and tone to Bernstein's 'Investor's Manifesto.' Financial planner, Tom Scott, has built his career on helping amateur investors build solid portfolios that can compete with the top mutual funds and yield high returns over the long haul. Scott has distilled much of his wisdom into a concise, easy-to-read handbook that has the dual advantages of being a little shorter and--for those on a tight budget this holiday season--quite a bit cheaper than the more heavily marketed 'Manifesto.'

For those looking for a variety of perspectives on the matter of investing with confidence, another book of interest is John Girourard's [[ASIN:0979157900 The Ten Truths of Wealth Creation]]. Published in '07, 'Ten Truths' may seem, at this point, to be an oldie, but it's definitely a goodie!

All you need to know in 200 pages

William Bernstein has been a favorate of individual investors for many years. Most of us have everything he has ever written. Here in one volume you have all you will ever need to build and maintain the optimum portfolio.

His advice is to the point and specific. For example try this quotation. "If you act on the assumption that every broker, insurance salesman, mutual fund salesperson and financial advisor is a hardened criminal you will do just fine.
" Here is my book on investing-you may take a look at it or some of the 49cent short stories [[ASIN:B000LRYP7Q How to Manage Stock Market Risk]], [[ASIN:B000RG17IG Investing Tips #1 - #20: Valuable Facts Organized Under 20 Topics for Easy Reading]][[ASIN:1598720953 How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission]][[ASIN:1598720953 How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission]]

I have been an investor in stocks and bonds for seventy years now. It took me many years to realize that all of my past big money making trades were the product of pure luck. All of my consistent long term successes have been with using index mutual funds and exchange traded funds as Bill's book recommends.

Very helpful and enjoyable to the inexperienced investor.

I won't go into an exhaustive review of the book's contents, but I will give a brief summary of my reasons for enjoying the book so much.

- As an inexperienced investor, this book was very helpful in establishing a foundation of knowledge for me. More than that, the book provides numerous resources to support any interests that the reader may have. I really enjoyed this, as it sets me up for continued education in this area.
- The book understands its place. It provides a brief history of the market and the basic elements of investing, and doesn't try to extend into areas that area already covered in plenty of detail. This relates to my above point of providing supplementary resources in case the reader wants to dive deeper in a particular subject.
- This book was a very easy ready. I read it in a week of leisurely evening reading, and it was very easy to pick up where I left off.
- The narratives are very enjoyable. The author has a unique background, which lends itself to interesting discussions and tales that kept me entertained.

As an introductory book to the fundamentals of passive investing, I would happily recommend this to any readers.

Practical Advice

The author does an excellent job of explaining the importance of financial planning in today's US society along with the underlying risks and rewards and the importance of an individual's ability to be comfortable with a certain level of risk. It concludes with some very specific guidelines for asset distribution. Of course the minute I followed the advice to be more aggressive the market dropped 10% so I can understand his warnings about being able to ride the wave. The book is well written, easy to understand a very complex topic and gives very thoughtful advice. There is no ground-breaking new strategy, just a thorough development of the tried and true strategies.

A Simpleanswer to a Complex Problem

This book takes the reader through the basic principles of investing, including the obvious need to save in order to invest at all. It makes the basic point that almost no one can accurately predict the market, and those that might be able to, or profess to be able to, charge far too much for their services to benefit the average investor. (His criticisms of the "money managers" is really much more harsh than my own.) Accepting our inability to actually "play the market", the author suggests a simple approach of low cost mutual funds that allow for a wide range of diversity at little cost.

Basically, the book tells us that predicting the market can't be done, but profiting in the market through low cost mutual funds is really quite simple. He then makes specific suggestions aimed at establishing a reasonable portfolio. This is an excellent resource, and is consistent with other recent reading that this rather disappointed baby boomer has recently completed.

This Manifesto is a "Must Read" for anyone investing, or thinking of investing

The prior reviews of this book are so thorough and accurate there is not much left to be said about it. William Bernstein does begin with basics that may lull some readers into believing they are too sophisticated for this book. That isn't the case. He is only trying to cover the broadest audience. He gets to the details, he makes his points, and regardless of your interest in finance this book is a must read for any one who is already investing, considering investing, or believes investing is not for them. My initial thought while reading this book was that all three of my now grown children need to read this book. On second thought I believe everyone needs to read this book.
