Description

Randy Pausch was a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design at Carnegie Mellon, where he was the co-founder of Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC). He was a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow. He had sabbaticals at Walt Disney Imagineering and Electronic Arts (EA), and consulted with Google on user interface design. Dr. Pausch received his bachelors in Computer Science from Brown University and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. He was the director of the Alice (www.alice.org) software project, and had traveled in zero-gravity. He lived with his wife, Jai, and their three young children in Virginia. Jeff Zaslow wrote the Wall Street Journal column that fueled the initial interest in Randy Pausch's lecture. He was also the co-author of Captain Chesley Sullenberger's The Highest Duty and the author of The Girls from Ames , both bestsellers.

Features & Highlights

  • After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned—about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have—in this life-changing classic.
  • "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." —Randy Pausch
  • A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?
  • When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave—"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"—wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about
  • living
  • .
  • In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Read it.

This man gives us his whole life story because, in his mind-thankfully, he has been given notice as to when the end will actually come. Whether you are dealing with a flat tire or terminal cancer, anyone can take something of value from this man's story.

I just finished this book, and I definitely may read it again one day.

Not my favorite

This book was emotional but I didn't like the know-it-all way it was written. So not to appear to heartless, I'll just say it wasn't my favorite.

Positive, optimistic approach to living life

Got so much more from this book than I expected. Not dark or depressing; in fact the opposite. Many lessons in life to learn from.

Be the first Penguin

Recommended by a college professor, I picked up this book and started reading. I've read many self help and motivation books before this. Yet this one had such a deeper impact. Perhaps it was because he was going to die. Or that I could relate to different situations in his life. All I know is that it's been about two months and I still remember his cliches in detail.
