Description

About the Author Agatha Christie (1890–1976) is the bestselling novelist in history; only the Bible and the works of Shakespeare are more frequently purchased than her mysteries, which have sold more than a billion copies in English and another billion in 100 foreign languages. Her play, The Mousetrap, opened in London in 1952 and has run continuously ever since.

Features & Highlights

  • When plucky young Anne Beddingfeld comes to London, looking for adventure, she doesn't have to search for long. While waiting on the platform at Hyde Park Corner tube station, she watches in horror as a man loses his balance and tumbles to his death. The Scotland Yard investigation deems it an accident, but Anne is not convinced. Who was the man in the brown suit who examined the lifeless body? And why did he hurry off, leaving a note with the cryptic message "17.122 Kilmorden Castle"?Anne's zeal to follow the clue leads her aboard a South Africa–bound ocean liner, where she is plunged into a world of diamond thieves and political intrigue. The vessel's lively nightlife ranges from a torrid romance on the foredeck to the sudden appearance in her cabin of a bleeding man, to outright attempts on her life. Now she is confronted with a ship's roster of suspects and no way of knowing who she can trust. Praised by
  • The Observer
  • as "written with spirit and humour," this sprightly tale from early in Agatha Christie's career offers a gripping blend of murder mystery and international crime thriller.

A good book, just not exceptional

This was the first Agatha Christie book that I read and even though it was kind of slow in places, it was still and enjoyable read.

So much fun to read and well written, too.

We are reading Agatha Christie books for our book club started during the lock down. It’s been a great way to visit each other via zoom, trying to figure out the crime and take our minds off our difficulties for a little while.

Aaaaaaahhhhh!!!

The best Agatha Christie standalone book. Girl in the 20s, steamship, Baghdad, wealth. Just a super book. Actually it’s my second most favorite book. Lol

An Agatha Christie Classic

It's difficult to choose between the best Agatha Christie novel. Is there one? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle hit a climax with The Hound of the Baskervilles. Agatha Christie didn't play her characters as chess pieces, that's a joke. Probably on situations similar to the one in this novel.
