About the Author Robert S. Porter, MD earned his MD from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA and completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. Dr Porter is board certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Since 1983, he has held a variety of clinical and teaching appointments in the Philadelphia area, most recently at Albert Einstein Medical Center and Thomas Jefferson University. He currently works for Merck, where he is editor-in-chief of The Merck Manuals .

I bought this book and had it shipped to Canada. It arrived quicker than I thought. I find myself referring to it often. I'm a nursing student and love this book. The pages are flimsy but if you're careful it won't tear. I would recommend this book to nursing students - LPNs as well as RNs and other medical staff. I give this book a 5. Hope this helps those who are thinking about purchasing.

Medical hand book

Some of the material is a bit outdated. However, the book is a great readily available source of fundamental medical knowledge and serves as a good base for further exploration for additional detailed and current information if such is needed. It is a worthy successor of its previous edition.

A great book

I had an older addition that I just loved using. Unfortunately I loaned it to someone and never got it back. This book is great, but is more generalized in information. Example: Specific urinary track infections are generalized and this was not the case with the other book. Still a very viable resource and tool, just not a specific as I would have liked.

THIS IS THE ONE WORTH THE MONEY

I still have my older editions: 13th (1977) and 16th (1992) and will soon be ordering this 19th edition (2011) since it is time to update my trusted medical reference that reflects the more current diagnostic and treatment information that is now dated in these older editions. It will be about 5 more years for another editon to be published so now is the time to buy. Even though I am now retired from healthcare practice, I still want to have a valuable medical reference available to me.

Poo poo'd the Merk Manual in med school , we had Harrison 's etc. But for the past 20+ years I've used it more and more as a quick reference in the office. And for me a lot faster than looking it up on my tablet. A real time saver packed full of what you need to know now.
