Description

“Neurologist [Josh] Turknett, a longtime migraine sufferer, offers a potentially revelatory approach to treating a condition that affects 30–40 million people in the US. His premise: that the current standards of migraine management―including prescription and over-the-counter medications, and preventative drugs―can largely be set aside in favor of mimicking an ancestral diet that is high in animal protein and low in wheat, sugar, and processed foods. Doing so enables the hypothalamus, ‘a primary suspect in the hunt for neural origins of migraine,’ to efficiently maintain the body’s homeostasis, short-circuiting diet-triggered impulses that cause and prolong migraines. Given the low-fat, high-carb eating favored by many, the writer acknowledges that the diet may be radical. However, as someone who has successfully made the transition himself, and who recommends the diet to his patients, Turknett’s idea carries weight. He offers a comprehensive definition of migraines and how they are diagnosed (or misdiagnosed), discusses factors that make a person more susceptible to migraines, and explores typical treatments. He then addresses the tenets of the diet and leads into original recipes and a 21-day eating plan.”― Publisher’s Weekly “I love, love, love this book.xa0I personally suffer from an auto-immune disease, and this fun, easy read left me not only informed, but confident that I can live a longer life. As a chef, I found the diet and the recipes very achievable. Turknett really relates to everyday people in this truly informative and exceedingly helpful book. Life-changing.”― Tracey Bloom , chef, lifestyle consultant, Top Chef contestant, and co-owner of www.freecuisine.com“Bold, eye opening, and compelling, The Migraine Miracle promises to forever alter the landscape of migraine treatment for the better. Essential reading for anyone who suffers from migraines, and essential reading for anyone who cares for migraine patients.” ―Timothy Lo, MD, MPH , neurologist and pain management specialist“Ancestral diets and lifestyle practices have proven highly effective at curing migraines. Indeed, they are a general recipe for superb health and longevity. Josh Turknett has helped himself and many patients with these techniques, and now brings us the best available guide for overcoming migraines. Losing hope...

I was so hopeful with this book as well as paying for the online Beast-slayer training and menu. I have been following the diet religiously for 3 weeks. I have gone off all medications including my occasionally used triptans, and moderately used OTCs. I did have some rebound headaches the first week but the second week was great! Then without changing anything, I began to get the headaches again with a terrible migraine at the beginning of week 3. I am keeping my carbs between 30-40 grams/ day, no sugar, no gluten. My carbs mainly come from vegetables and only a small amount from carrots and the below-ground variety. I am still planning to continue the diet for at least another week, but I am slowly losing hope that it will work for me.

Migraines Are Such A Headache, But Can Diet Really Help? YEP!

If you've ever been the victim of a migraine headache, you would literally do ANYTHING to make it go away. Pain medications, ice packs, lying down--whatever it takes to get rid of that horrible feeling. That's a uniquely debilitating kind of pain that will stop you dead in your tracks from being productive or showing signs of life until it comes to an end. Board-certified neurologist Dr. Josh Turknett, MD knows all-too-well about this issue and contends in his book The Migraine Miracle that what you eat in your diet has a lot more to do with controlling these than people realize.

Like so many chronic health issues, migraine headaches are triggered by the inferior foods and food-like products we are shoving in our mouths everyday. People have become completely oblivious to the connection between the Doritos and Coca-Cola they consume and the resulting health effects. But the old saying "food is medicine" most certainly applies. Hearkening back to the ancestral principles of our forefathers might just hold the key to optimizing our health in modern times. Did they eat sugar? No. How about gluten and grains? Not a chance. Dr. Turknett puts for the notion that perhaps we could learn from this and remove these from our diet too and find relief for our headaches. This non-pharmaceutical therapy is certainly worth a shot if you're suffering from the ill effects of migraines.

In this book, you'll learn all about the "miracle" of controlling migraines for good with some pretty simple changes in your lifestyle choices, discover what triggers these headaches for you, how exactly the various drugs that treat migraines actually work, the impact the agricultural revolution played on our diets that shifted us away from what we were designed to eat, the serious lack of micronutrients in our modern diet, the foods that are raising inflammation levels in our body making us susceptible to a variety of diseases, and why choosing to eat real whole foods is the best choice if you want to live optimally healthy and migraine-free. This is a rich book full of some really amazing information written in a very consumer-friendly style that will empower you to make changes that will benefit you for life. And don't miss the yummy recipes from Dr. Turknett's wife, Jenny, at the end of the book.

Not very helpful.

I found several of Dr Turknett's recommendations to be troubling or unclear. For instance, he says we should expose ourselves to at least 30 minutes a day of sunlight around noon without sunscreen. If I did that, I would be horribly sunburned after one day. Not happening. I also found his diet to be too vague. I would say skip purchasing this one and check it out from the library instead if you really want to read it.

Stop Migraines!

I would recommend this to anyone who has dealt with Migraines. It is very well written with great explanations and easy to follow directions. My family is trying to follow the ideas given by the author. (I had already read the book and this copy was a gift to family members who are beginning the dietary changes.)

Helped to identify triggers

Great book with important information about the tie in of food and migraines. Information that can be gleaned from other sources, but here it is all presented together in a compelling and digestible format. The reading was much easier than the implementing!! But I often went back and scanned the book again to gain further motivation.
With what I learned from this book, I was able to clearly see what foods were triggering my migraine and suddenly a "food journal" wasn't necessary. I could look back at where I "cheated" and see the migraine come right after.
