(The Things We Get blog We Taste Cincinnati online 2008-10-16) Meredith Deeds is a cooking teacher, food journalist and author. Because of their versatility they are perhaps the most integral piece of culinary equipment we own. Certainly our cupboards are filled with all kinds of machines, tools and gadgets, but we can turn to no other one machine to knead dough, grind meat, slice vegetables, whip egg whites and make ice cream. Because of that, we have come to rely on our stand mixers as trusted culinary companions. As cooking teachers, though, we are always surprised to find that so many of our students don't own a stand mixer -- and if they do, they are often unaware of all of its capabilities. One student that stands out in our memories had had her own stand mixer for years, but had never used any attachment other than the whip. She had long ago put away her flat beater and dough hook, never stopping to consider how they might be used. Once we clued her in to the possibilities, she felt as though she had rediscovered an old friend. There are many brands of stand mixers on the market, and more and more of them are developing attachments that will revolutionize the time you spend in the kitchen: pasta makers, food grinders, grain mills, juicers and ravioli makers all offer you the chance to be more creative and spend less time making dinner. The stand mixer, with all of its available attachments, can now complete almost any culinary task. While the majority of handheld mixers have stood still in their evolution, holding fast to their limited power and functions, the stand mixer has blossomed into a culinary work center capable of saving you time and money. Who would have thought years ago that this machine we've always turned to for preparing lemon meringue pies and cinnamon rolls would be capable of producing perfect pasta or paper-thin mushroom slices or mountains of grated cheese, all so quickly and efficiently? The evolution of the stand mixer makes a book like this necessary. Our goal is to help you understand the equipment and ease you into a comfortable working relationship with the machine and its attachments. We have provided you with an assortment of delicious recipes, everything from Hearty Harvest Roasted Vegetable Soup to Mocha Almond Ice Cream. Although many of the recipes require one or more of the additional attachments, the majority concentrate on the standard flat beater, whip and dough hook. While you're whipping, kneading and slicing your way through this book, you'll also be gaining valuable insight into basic cooking techniques. Tips on how to achieve success in the kitchen accompany many of the recipes. Our years as culinary instructors have taught us the stumbling blocks that home cooks can experience. We have addressed these issues so that you can cook confidently even when under pressure. The recipes cover the globe in flavors and textures, from Moroccan-Style Lamb Turnovers to New England Clam Chowder to Tomatillo Chicken Tamales to Ginger-Spiked Tuna Burgers with Asian Coleslaw. We loved testing every recipe in this book. From simple to spectacular, there is truly something for everyone in this bible of a cookbook. So pull out your stand mixer, dust it off and dive into making Shrimp Bisque and French Bread. It's easier than you think. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Lost without it

Bought a lovely Kitchenaid stand mixer.

And that's what it did. Stand. And do nothing. Until I bought this book.

Seriously, Kitchenaid should up the price of the mixer by the cost of this book, and throw it in as an essential attachment.

Very helpful, lots of explanations and tips. Couldn't work without it. If you splashed out for the mixer, splash out for the book. It's as essential as the power cord.

Indespensible (if you have the attachments)

This gets 5 stars IF you have a KitchenAid mixer with attachments. It makes the difference between actually using all those cool attachments and putting them away in a drawer! I wouldn't recommend it to those who have the mixer, but no attachments, because it's use would be limited.

Get Real

I have a bone to pick with reviewers who slam a book because it may not have pictures. You can't judge a book by such petty criteria. After all, Mastering the Art of French Cooking (one of the best books ever written about French cuisine) doesn't have pictures. To have or to have not pictures is something that a publisher determines when deciding a price for the book. You want to spend $40 on a book with pictures? Fine. For my money I'll take a $20 or less price point cook book with great recipes any day. The Mixer Bible is chock full of great recipes whether you have the extra attachments or not. The authors were recently on a Kitchenaid conversations panel where they stated that half the recipes in the book can be made with only the basic 3 attachments that come with most mixers whether Sunbeam, Viking or Jennaire. It seems like they really tried to write a book for anyone with a stand mixer. They wrote a great book to cook by, not to use as a picture book. Judge a book not by its cover, but what's inside in the way of recipes and know how.

Not what I expected

Not just titled the bible, many people consider it to be the bible of mixers. Unfortunately, I disagree. I'm not sure what I was expecting- I guess I was looking for new uses for my mixer along with a great set of recipes. There's about 4 pages of tips for using your mixer.

Instead most are regular recipes that look for some way to use the mixer- usually when it makes no sense. Take the soups for example. Sorry, I'm not going to use my mixer as a strainer. How about using the mixer to mash your potatoes? No thanks. I've got cheap, easy, and effective hand tools to take care of those tasks.

It's not a total loss. The sausage, bread, and dessert sections are great. That's a PRACTICAL use for my mixer. All in all, this is primarily a recipe book with little to do with your stand mixer. The bible, it is not

Solid recipes - excellent use of attachments

The recipes in this book are just average. It has a large mix of recipes, so the choices are limited, so don't buy this book if you are looking to make only certain kinds of things (e.g. just pastries).

Cons: few photos, some hard to find ingredients, slanted towards attachments

Pros: mixer/attachment specific information, bread recipes, ravioli recipes

I have the ice cream maker (get Ben and Jerry's book instead), slicer/shredder, and pasta roller attachments. I really wanted to make ravioli - this book has EXCELLENT info on the roller and several different pasta recipes (orange pasta, spinach pasta and the basics...). The pasta recipes here have worked much, much better than ones I have tried on epicurius and cooks.com. However, for me, the sheer number of ravioli recipes was worth it - they're excellent. On the flip side, this part of the book would be useless to you (as is sausage for me) if you don't have the pasta roller or don't want to roll your own manually.

If you do not have any attachments whatsoever, I recommend Reader's digest Low-Calorie cook book, which really surprisingly has some incredibly savory recipes appropriate for every meal/course.

I love my KA and this book

I have owned a KA stand mixer since 1976, just upgraded my old faithful. Before this book, I made cakes & cookies and they were wonderful but now I've expanded to other uses and attachments.

It's so much fun to make my own pasta and this book really walks you through the steps. I also agree with another viewer, KA should pack this treasure in the mixer box. Well worth the money and Amazon has the best price as always.

Very good cookbook!

This cookbook has recipes anyone can make! It has detailed instructions with tips on the side. My favorite recipe it the Farmhouse White Bread. The recipes are realistic for everyday people that don't have to be extravagant. Good down home recipes! Enjoy!

Simple and Useful Mixer Book

My husband and I bought this book for a cousin as a wedding gift. The bride later thanked us because of its ease of use and variety of recipes. I also scanned the book myself for practicality. Even though it has no pictures, it is organized really well. One recipe that I tried turned out well, which is why we felt comfortable in giving it as a gift. We hope to buy this book sometime for ourselves or to receive it as a gift, too!

A Great Book

I have made several of the recipes in this book, and every one has been a success. Although this is not a glitzy publication with lots of pictures, the wide variety of recipes are first class, and the book is well laid out with a good index.

Although a stand mixer is helpful to make the fullest use of this book, it is not entirely necessary, and it is definitely not necessary to have all of the attachments that are called for in the book (I have none). Any moderately equipped kitchen will have the necessary gadgets to successfully prepare most of the recipes in this book.

This book lives up to it's name

This is an excellent book that will result in your using your mixer more than in the past. If you only have one book for your stand mixer, this is the one. Great basic recipes that you will use.
