A Sobering Call to Action for Liberals and Progressives

A particular argument in this book is that hyper-individualism, starting with the Reagan Revolution is now woven into the Democratic Party through identity politics and is severing the bonds of community that progressives and liberals used to successfully rebuild the US after the depression, win World War II, and fed the civil rights movement of the 1960s. The fascination of the political left with marches, rallies and protests diverts their attention away from the most important goal in politics - holding power in the bodies with power.

Given our entry into the silly season of primary politics for 2020, and after watching the debates it is clear no one in the Democratic Party leadership or the candidates campaigns have either read this book, or give any weight to its conclusions. The utter lack of unifying theme, doubling down on identity divisions, and total lack of action to field a bench of candidates at the municipal and state levels means a victory at the presidential level, however unlikely will not be supported by the states and lack enough support long-term to cement their agenda.
