Description

Clever and suspenseful...surefire delight.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)There are deep resonances here of world creation myths and the power of artistic expression… free-wheeling faux-childlike illustrations … a thought-provoking model of conflict resolution. But really, this wry, madcap, loving story is for everyone who thinks that of course a boiled egg should be called Billy or who wants to hear the tale repeatedly so as to shout "OUT!" louder each time.—The Horn Book (starred review)Inspire some creative world-building in budding artists.—Kirkus ReviewsAhlberg’s matter-of-fact, curiously specific storytelling has a weirdly appealing blend of absurdity and homey charm.—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s BooksThe Pencil is wildly inventive, deliciously high-concept and simmering with dramatic tension. (Who could have imagined sweat beads flying off a nervous pencil would be so believable?)—San Francisco Chronicle onlineBoth clever and suspenseful, this surefire delight tells the story of a pencil who must deal with the consequences of his inventions…The book’s comical unexpected plot and wry narrator keep the story fresh throughout.—San Francisco ExaminerA definite winner from the team that created The Runaway Dinner. The combination of humorous text, quirky drawn out writing style, and clever illustrations all point to another runaway hit!—For Immediate Release Reviews…KidsAhlberg's playful, abundant imagination is made visible in Ingman's wryly personified illustrations.—The Star.comALL of the characters in this book get names — even the ants. And it’s a GEM of a read-aloud!—Shelftalker (PW blog) Allan Ahlberg is the acclaimed author of numerous picture books, including PREVIOUSLYand THE RUNAWAY DINNER. • Once a pencil draws a little boy, there’s no telling what will come next — a dog, a cat, a chase (of course), and a paintbrush to color in an ever-expanding group of family and friends. But it’s not long before the complaints begin — "This hat looks silly!" "My ears are too big!" — until the poor pencil has no choice but to draw . . . an eraser. Oh, no! In the hands of Allan Ahlberg and Bruce Ingman, creators of

One page, not well edited for young children. OOPS!

We bought this book for our Saturday Art Program picture book collection, but we've decided not to include it. So this is mostly a delightful little picture book. Pencil is lonely, draws some friends--a paintbrush and an eraser. Eraser goes on a power trip and starts erasing the world so Pencils tries to trip them behind a wall (which they erase through), and in a cage (which they also erase); so Pencil draws another Eraser and the two "rub each other out." Which we found problematic for the possible sexual innuendo and the fighting (which is how some of our students would interpret it). As adults we mostly laughed at the innuendo (felt very much the way Sesame Street puns were alway put in for adult views that were over the kids heads), but as teachers we felt the book's author and editor should have done a more thoughtful job with the page of the story. Maybe this page won't feel contentious in all teaching contexts, but we thought teachers should be aware of this page so that they can make their own decision about the book for their own classroom context.

Entertaining and Fun

One o those fun, silly books that young children will want to read over and over. There is a deeper commentary on art and creativity, but mostly, it is just fun.

Her teacher recommended it to her

I first saw this book when my daughter brought it back from school. Her teacher recommended it to her. That was three or four years ago. I loved it the first time I read it. God it from Amazon. A few days ago, my daughter dug it out from the bookshelf and read it. She said "it's a very good book." I'm glad she now enjoy the story.

fair.

Like Previously the best. The pencil's storyline is a bit off, with connections to religious text or an off message for young children. It's longer than I would have liked to see, as interest within larger groups may become difficult.
