Description

"The precious present has nothing to do with wishing. The richness of the precious present comes from its own source. The precious present is not something that someone gives you. It is something that you give to yourself." The parable of The Precious Present is a quiet one to muse upon and sit with, and finally to take into your heart. Spencer Johnson, coauthor of the bestselling business classic The One Minute Manager , has created a simple path for the reader to follow in the search for peace and clarity. While The Precious Present may read like a children's book for adults, its slow pace requires the mind to quiet down so that it can really register the meaning of Johnson's words. "The Present Is Simply Who I Am Just The Way I Am... Right Now. And It Is Precious." We may be familiar with this philosophy in theory, but the experience of reading The Precious Present is truly synchronous with its message. --Jodie Buller " The Precious Present puts life in its simplest form.xa0xa0We should all follow its message and live life in the wonderful state The Precious Present awards each of us.xa0xa0I read it to all of my teams before we take the floor for the first day of practice."--Rick Pitino, author of Success is a Choice From the Publisher The best-selling inspirational classic by the author of The One-Minute Manager , now redesigned with two-color text and exquisite original woodcuts -- a perfect gift for any loved one. From the Inside Flap Discover the precious present and find yourself! A simple story, engagingly told, The Precious Present does more than capture the heart; it is a valuable gift for anyone seeking a deeper level of fulfillment and personal happiness. Telling a story of vital significance in today's fast-paced, competitive environment, The Precious Present will help you discover the joy in life we all seek--whether we go to Wall Street or around the world to find it. Just as Spencer Johnson's bestseller The One Minute Manager helped rehumanize the workplace around the world, The Precious Present helps each reader rediscover his or her own humanity. This beautiful tale demonstrates the delicate art of balancing your spiritual and material needs, and shows how this goal can be maddeningly elusive--and gloriously attainable. "It is a present because it is a gift," the contented man explained. And it is called The Precious Present, because it is the best present of all. When the boy asked why, the old man explained."It is the best present a person can receive because anyone who receives such a gift is happy forever.""Wow!" the little boy exclaimed. "I hope someone gives me The Precious Present. Maybe I'll get it for Christmas."The boy ran off to play. And the old man smiled. He liked to watch the little boy play.He saw the smile on the youngster's face and heard him laughing as he swung from a nearby tree. The boy was happy. And it was a joy to see.The old man also liked to watch the boy work.He even rose early on Saturday mornings to watch the little laborer across the street mow the lawn. The boy actually whistled while he worked. The little child was happy no matter what he was doing. It was, indeed, a joy to behold. When he thought about what the old man had said, the boy thought he understood. He knew about presents. . .Like the bicycle he got for his birthday and the gifts he found under the tree on Christmas morning. But as the boy thought more about it, he knew. The joy of toys never lasts forever. The boy began to feel uneasy."What then," he wondered,"is The Precious Present? "What could be so good. . . so much better than any other present. . . that it is called The Precious Present? "What could possibly make me happy forever?"He found it difficult to even imagine the answer. And so he returned to ask the old man."Is The Precious Present a magical ring? One that I might put on my finger and make all my wishes come true?""No," he was told. The Precious Present Has Nothing To Do With Wishing. Read more

I was definitely hoping for more...

I know that my review flies in stark contrast to most of the other reviews of Spencer Johnson's "The Precious Present," but I found this book to be too simplistic to have any real value. I read the entire book in less than ten minutes (probably less than five). Folks, that's not a book. That's a pamphlet. I'm certainly glad that I didn't pay the $18.95 listed on the back cover. I'm just sad that the person who gave it to me did pay that amount.

Ultimately, Dr. Johnson has one little idea that is probably worth communicating on some level. However, I disagree with the notion that who I am today is all that matters. Life is more complicated than that, and I'm thankful for that reality. It's not all about me. And it's not all about right now. I was created to live within the context of a community of other people, so my satisfaction with life is in many ways dependent on my interactions with others. My past has shaped who I am today, and who I am today is crucial for the development of who I hope to become. So to suggest (even in some poetic, allegorical parables) that the perfect present is to be happy with who I am right now is simply disingenuous.

I really wouldn't suggest this book to anyone. If you want to develop a better sense of who you are and what you were created to do, read Os Guinness' "The Call" or John Piper's "Don't Waste Your Life." Though I don't even agree with many of their points, at least they provide some substance for further reflection. After I put "The Precious Present" on my bookshelf, I don't think I'll ever think about it again. To me, that's the sign of a book that is not worth reading.

Every adult, graduate should own this

I read this years ago, and it is a favorite gift I like to give high school graduates and people who are struggling with hardships in their life. It amazes me how many people have not read it. I enjoy purchasing it because it reminds me of the message in the story and I reread it. It only takes 10 or 15 minutes to read it. I am a sap and I cry like a baby each time. The 3rd book I purchased, I gave to a friend whose wife had passed away. He was struggling terribly and was in a very dark place. He had 3 beautiful children who were missing him. I wrote a message in the inside saying, "Pass this to the next person if you ever feel they need to find the Precious Present." I was at my son's football practice last week and was talking to another mom. We exchanged frustrations with home life and I told her how a good friend of mine passed away over the winter and how it took a toll on me. She asked me if I had read, "The Precious Present". I smiled and said, yes a few times. She brought the book to the next practice and I opened it up, and would you believe it...it was my book that I had given to my friend years ago that had been passed around. It had so many messages from people in it. I sobbed like a baby!! Just wanted to share this. We get so busy we forget the simple things in life. I highly recommend!

Wonderful

This is a short, straight foreward book. It provides a wonderful message and is very pleasent to read. It simply reminds you how to live in this "present" day. It's a good read; but an even better gift.

Carpe Diem! (seize the day)

Spencer Johnson has written another wonderful parable much deeper in meaning than it initially appeared. I am amazed at his ability to capture my life's common and often taken-for-granted moments and teach me how to see what I too often fail to see.

I related to this book as a first-time dad with a toddler son. Taking and making time to be there for my wife and son in the "precious present" is something I truly treasure. In my efforts to be a better husband and father, this book renewed and reinforced my commitments to them.

Lou Holtz, the dynamic and successful college football coach and motivational speaker, wrote, "I am not what I want to be, I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I am going to be, but thank God, I am not what I used to be." That quote sums up how I feel about my ability to constantly live in the precious present. Johnson's book will now be a frequent `reality check' for me and I recommend it to anyone who might need a quick reminder of what makes the present so precious.

Great for Kids too

After reading this to my son one Christmas he asked me to come in and read it to his third grade class...I took my time reading it to them and they loved it - and understood its meaning quite well for 9 year olds. A great story within a story - one for everyone of all ages to read.

Once upon a time...

I was very disappointed with this book. I was expecting an adult book with a moving story about taking time in the present to enjoy your life. What I got was more like a young childrens book that was over simplfied.

Wonderful Modern Day Parable for a Better Life ...

This book first called out to me from it's bookshelf as I walked by it in my local bookstore about a decade ago. I wasn't looking for a self help book, or a inspirational book, that day ... but for some reason the book just wouldn't let me walk past it. So I picked it up and started reading. And I read the whole book right there in the aisle of the bookstore (it's a quick read). It was so moving it brought a small tear to my eye before I finished reading.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." ~ Leonardo da Vinci

Yes, this is a simple book. Simple enough for a child to read yet profound enough for a sage to cherish. If your life seems to have lost it's meaning and joy ... this book may be just the answer to your problems.

In this book author Spenser Johnson (the co-author of the best-selling "One Minute Manager", and other popular self-help books) addresses both our material and spiritual needs. This is his classic fable of a young boy in search of the "Precious Present" -- the gift with the power to make whoever receives it happy forever ... and of the wise old man who speaks of this wonderful present in parables and

leaves it up to the boy to discover for himself what it is and how it can be found.

Take a good look at your life ... if you are constantly living in the past or worrying about the future (and thereby missing out on today ... and who of us isn't these days) then this book could change your life! Let this book show you how to LIVE HERE and LIVE NOW ... for when you do you will live life to the fullest ... and return to the joy you once had for life, back in your childhood days.

This book should be kept close at hand and re-read whenever you find yourself forgetting to LIVE in the PRECIOUS PRESENT for unfortunately the pressures of modern day society tend to slowly take us away from this practice even when we have found it to be beneficial ... so a gentle reminding of what we already know is needed from time to time.

When I first read this book I was not familiar with any of Spencer Johnson's other books. In the years since, I have read many of Johnson's other writings. Johnson has a way of putting self improvement into simple, easy, enjoyable stories that can be read whenever you need reminding of what might be causing your day to day problems. But as good as many of Johnson's other books are ... this one has long remained my FAVORITE. If you've enjoyed Johnson's other books this is a must read ... and ... if you haven't read any of Spenser Johnson's books before than start by reading this book ... you'll fall in love with this writer of modern day parables for a better life.

Like Spenser Johnson says in this book ..."the precious present is not something that someone gives you. It is something that you give to yourself." So treat yourself to this book ... you'll be glad you did.

A riddle, a reminder, a respite

I don't want to give it away. Read the book, it will take you an hour of active reading. Anyone, everyone should read it. My eight year old read it and understood. It's good for team building, morale building, and life affirmation. Like other Spencer Johnson, Ken Blanchard, Jon Gordon, Mark Sanborn stuff, you know this, but you forget it because life sometimes separates you from living.
