Features & Highlights

  • A touching and intimate correspondence between Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, offering timeless wisdom and a revealing glimpse into their lives
  • Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a year-long conversation unlike any they had ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.
  • Both a son’s love letter to his mother and an unconventional mom’s life lessons for her grown son,
  • The Rainbow Comes and Goes
  • offers a rare window into their close relationship and fascinating life stories, including their tragedies and triumphs. In these often humorous and moving exchanges, they share their most private thoughts and the hard-earned truths they’ve learned along the way. In their words their distinctive personalities shine through—Anderson’s journalistic outlook on the world is a sharp contrast to his mother’s idealism and unwavering optimism.
  • An appealing memoir with inspirational advice,
  • The Rainbow Comes and Goes
  • is a beautiful and affectionate celebration of the universal bond between a parent and a child, and a thoughtful reflection on life, reminding us of the precious insight that remains to be shared, no matter our age.

A Great Read--Interesting on Many Levels

This was quite enlightening for me, as I was one of those people that simply assumed Gloria Vanderbilt led a charmed life. I was just young enough to have no clue about her earlier private life, even though it must have been highly publicized. In spite of all of the struggles and losses in their lives, the bond between Gloria and Anderson seems to have grown stronger in the past few years. Time has a way of doing that if you let it. Gloria is a forever optimist. Anderson admits he is more of a realist. I liked that Anderson and Gloria narrated the book on CD. It gave more insight into what they were thinking while emailing each other and kept me in the moment. I find myself telling people about the book and its' contents, because I can't help but share some of their stories. It is a reminder that, no matter what life throws at you or how many mistakes you make, you can have happiness. As Gloria mentions in the book, you have to have some bad things in your life to realize and enjoy the good things. The rainbow comes and goes.

Sometimes you need to be a certain age/stage in your life to appreciate the quality of a painful dialogue. If you are of that age/stage I highly recommend this book. If you are hung up on how rich they are and/or how privileged they seem to be to you, save your money. This mother and son are trying to communicate with us on a human level, and you have to be willing to receive that. It was a brave endeavor and I thank them for it.

A brilliant idea on the format

A brilliant idea on the format. I'm so impressed by Gloria's comments. You really feel the love she has for Anderson. I especially enjoyed disc 5 where Gloria talks about her philosophy on life. I could relate a lot to her feelings and emotions. I hope I make it to her age and and so bright.

I love listening to this

I love listening to this. The fact that Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt narrate it themselves makes a very personal and intimate book seem even more so. It is as I am sitting down with them personally and being able to listen to the details of their lives. The painful and dramatic details as well as the joyful ones. You can feel the love and respect between these two remarkable people. It is more than just an accounting of the their lives- it is a close look into all of our lives and the "human condition" that we all have- an empty space inside of all of us. We all try and fill it in many ways and these two have been brave enough to share their humaness with all of us-warts and all. Gloria's upbringing is heartbreaking, but she rises above unbelieveable events to shine. And the same is true of Anderson. I really think that this is a book that is best listened to- because of who reads it. I may buy the book, also- but listening is a joy.

Touching

I did not really know what to expect from this book as I did not read any of the reviews. I bought the book because I am a fan of Anderson Cooper and I wanted to learn more about his life and his mother's life. Gloria Vanderbilt had quite a life and not the one you expect.
Very touching books, especially the end. The story of a son and his mother getting to know each other and the similarity of their lives.
I listened to it 3 times......I have a long commute to work.

This mom and son story is touching, funny, and honest!

Great audiobook by one of my favorite voices on TV. If only we all could or should have done the same thing with our mothers. The documentary that compliments this book is awesome too.
