Description

From Publishers Weekly As one of the two leads of this contemporary suspense novel set in China is female forensic accountant (and, conveniently, former Chinese intelligence agent) Grace Chu, narrator Todd Haberkorn must create a compelling and believable woman's voice. Fortunately, he does, which removes any barrier to an effective rendering of the first book, about efforts to rescue an employee of an American company snatched in China, in a promising new series from Pearson. The other protagonist, John Knox—an importer with security training based in Shanghai—who's introduced somewhat the worse for wear after more than a week in the jungles of Cambodia, could come across as a cliché, the typical macho action hero, but Haberkorn helps to make him more than that, injecting an undertone of wry gallows humor to his performance. A Putnam hardcover. A decent read that introduces two new heroes

For this reader, Ridley Pearson is an author whose books I pick up without even glancing at the flyleaf. I enjoy his writing and just know I'm in for a good read.

The Risk Agent is Pearson's latest release.

The American firm of Rutherford Risk specializes in 'extraction' - the recovery of kidnap victions and hostages. Chinese national Lu Hao is kidnapped, as is Cletus Danner - the American who was keeping an eye on Lu Hao. This operation is going to require some finesse.......and some unique operatives. Civilian John Knox is approached - he has an intimate knowledge of the country and the language. And he has specialized military training as well. His counterpart? Grace Chu. On the surface she is simply a forensic accountant, hired to follow the money. But she too has military training.

I found the background behind the Risk Agent interesting. Ridley Pearson spent a year in Shanghai with his family while teaching at a local university. This year's residence added much detail to The Risk Agent. The customs, culture, language and descriptions of the land and it's people were richly described and definitely added to the overall tone of the book.

My favourite series of Pearson's have been the Lou Boldt novels. With The Risk Agent, Ridley takes us in a new direction - espionage instead of suspense. I felt a little lost in the beginning as there are many, many characters introduced very quickly. The book hits the ground running from the first chapter and never lets up. There are layers upon layers in the plot, with everyone having their own agenda hidden below the primary objective. You'll want to be on your toes to keep track of all the machinations going on.

But the real draw are these new characters. Pearson has wisely created both a strong male and female protagonist, appealing to all readers. I enjoyed both characters, but was more drawn to John. I think his personal back story engaged me more. The Risk Agent is the first offering in a new series. I'll be looking forward to the next novel featuring this pair. Now that the stage has been set, I think there's lots of action ahead for this intrepid duo.

Fans of the Ludlum novels and those of Vince Flynn would enjoy this new series.

Cerebral thriller.

Ridley Pearson pairs Grace Chu and John Knox to find two men kidnapped in Shanghai. An American company building a high rise in China finds bribes the only way to keep construction on tract. A Chinese national has been hired to pay the right people to look the other way. But Lu Hao is grabbed off the streets, along with an American who was following him.

Private detectives are not allowed to work in China. But the American contractor hires a large firm with experience in these matters. Enter Chu and Knox, tasked with finding the kidnapped men before they are expendable to their kidnappers. Both find themselves with personal ties to the men - Chu is the second cousin of the the bribe payer, the American is the designated guardian of Knox' disabled brother.

Pearson keeps the story moving and Shanghai provides the perfect backdrop. The main characters approach the problem differently, in no small part to their cultural differences. While they compliment each other, they do not find it easy to rely on each other. Their attempt to forge a workable solution plays out against the bigger story.

The story takes on complexity as the kidnapping is revealed to be anything but a simple grab for ransom. This is not pulse pounding action but a steady building of suspense, more mind that muscle.

Pearson appears to be developing a series for this unlikely pair. Will look forward to future installments. Recommended reading.

cofused

I'm a fan of Pearson's earlier work and I looked forward to this new Character he introduced in this book. He'd obviously done a lot of research on China but gave us too much incidental information for my good. I had a difficult time keeping track of all of the similiar Chinese names and the overabundance of villains he chose to use in telling this story. I think this possible series has potential, but it needs to be simplified.

A good thriller

The Risk Agent was staging in China. With so many characters it was a not a good heart pounder. If you like foreign thrillers then this book is for you. If you like books that keep your interest then this is not the book for you.

It took me a good while to get into it and I would not recommend it to anyone. There are much better authors out there.

I'm done

Have not read the book and will not until it comes out in paperback. I am no going to pay this price any more for any kindle book. I have read all of Flynn, Pearson, Thor, etc. not anymore. I can get better writing and more excitement from Marcus Wynne for a quarter of the price. Kindle prices from big names are ridiculous. I thought about upgrading my kindle but ABSOLUTELY NOT gonna happen.

An outstanding beginning to a great series!

First, I have to admit that I'm a big fan of Ridley Pearson. I've thoroughly enjoyed his books for the past fifteen years or so. Wish I would have discovered him sooner! I am a big fan of any book involving Lou Boldt, who I found to be one of the most believable and compelling characters in any of the books I've read.

I was reluctant, therefore, to pick up a book with a new character. Right now, Ridley is not writing anything new in his Lou Boldt series, so I decided to give this a try. I confess, I found myself really enjoying his new character John Knox.

If you are a fan of Ridley Pearson, or just a fan of well-written, suspenseful, action packed adventure, I think you will seriously enjoy this book!

A different direction for this writer

The writer is living in China temporarially, so we get mysteries about China. Not up to his usual stardards, but interesting. Good hero, somewhat slow action. Good plot. Buy it on Kindle.
