Features & Highlights

  • A late spring in 1142 brings dismay to the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, for there may be no roses by June the twenty-second. On that day the young widow Perle must receive one white rose as rent for the house she has given to benefit the abbey or the contract is void. When nature finally complies, a pious monk is sent to pay the rent, but discovers that the rose bush has been destroyed and he is then found murdered inside it. The abbey's wise herbalist, Brother Cadfael, follows the trail of bloodied petals. He knows the lovely widow's dowry is far greater with her house included, and she will likely wed again. But before Cadfael can ponder if a greedy suitor has done this dreadful deed, another crime is committed. Now the good monk must thread his way through a tangle more torturous than the widow's thorns.

Must Be Included

The exposition was swift yet contained all one needed to know in order to embrace the action and understand the characters' roles... especially if one is already familiar with Cadfael mysteries. This is a "must be included" in anyone's Cadfeal collection.

The Price of a Widow

I'm sure I saw the televised version of this story with the excellent Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael. However, it's been many years and I couldn't remember the outcome. Ellis Peters tells lovely, almost gentle stories, about herbalist Cadfael and his solution to crimes, absent any modern forensics. In this book, a widow has donated the home she lived in with her husband to the Abbey for the price of a single white rose from a specific rose bush by the donated house to be paid once a year. Because she's well-off, despite the gift, potential suitors are after her to marry again. Someone goes further than the law allows to gain his objective, starting with the attempted destruction of the rose bush. The only complaint I might share was that the condition of the book was a little fragile.

Cadfael improves with age

I love that the standard plot of the initial Cadfael novels is now expanding into variants. The women are stronger than ever, Cadfael is more prone to human error, and friendships grow ever more absolute.

Order Received

Although records did not reflect the receipt of this order (both Amazon's and mine), they were in error. The four books ordered together were all received properly.
