  • The Science of God
  • , distinguished physicist and Biblical scholar Gerald L. Schroeder demonstrates the surprising parallels between a variety of Biblical teachings and the findings of biochemists, paleontologists, astrophysicists, and quantum physicists. In a brilliant and wide-ranging discussion of key topics that have divided science and religion—free will, the development of the universe, the origin of life, and the origin of man—Schroeder argues that the latest science and a close reading of the Bible are not just compatible but interdependent. This timely reissue of
  • The Science of God
  • features a brand-new preface by Schroeder and a compelling appendix that addresses the highly publicized experiment in 2008 in which scientists attempted to re-create the chemical composition of the cosmos immediately after the Big Bang. It also details Schroeder’s lucid explanations of complex scientific and religious concepts, such as the theory of relativity, the passage of time, and the definitions of crucial Hebrew words in the Bible. Religious skeptics, Biblical literalists, scientists, students, and physicists alike will be riveted by Schroeder’s remarkable contribution to the raging debate between science and religion.

Thought-provoking

I enjoyed this trot through various scientific disciplines and attempt to conflate the roots of todays polarized arguments into one.
There is a lot packed into it. You may feel the need to go back and check up on his sources, re-read and research, because his assertions have the impression of fairly haphazard, tentative guesswork.

I'm not sure his interpretations of certain biblical verses are accurate, it would require the original Hebrew and much awareness of context to claim that e.g. biblical time started at the creation of human souls. Does Genesis 1:27 actually say this? I don't think its clear.
And so on.
He has some interesting ideas and writes about complicated scientific matters in an accessible and very easy-going style.
His premise seems to be that a) Current scientific thought is correct therefore b) The bible must be re-interpreted to fit popular theory.
But why would people of faith (of which I am one) limit God to limited human perception in the first instance? Surely the almighty could have made creation within 6 earth days if he so desired. I don't see the need to invent naturalistic explanations for certain events that we are told are supernatural, that are in any case accepted only by faith.

A beginning does not confirm the existence of a Beginner, it does open the way for that possibility" (p. 23).

I do not see a conflict between faith and science, so the concerns that some people have that may lead them to accept or reject this book are not mine. I have come to believe the Christian message through my encounter with Christ on a long pilgrimage with him. Some call this encounter "mystical" and I have come to see that it is. I embrace the wisdom of St. Anselm of Canterbury: "I do not seek to understand in order to believe, but I believe in order to understand. For I believe this: unless I believe, I will not understand."

I did not know many of the scientific concerns expressed in the book, but after reading the book I do have a better understanding. But I value the Bible not as a book of science, but as a book of wisdom and theology. Thus, this perspective expressed by Schroeder is meaningful to me and is found woven through much in his book: "The Bible is the earliest identifiable source of the great conceptual discoveries essential for civilization: equality before the law, sanctity of life, dignity of the individual, individual and communal responsibility, peace as an ideal, love as the foundation for justice" (p. 18).

While Gerald Schroeder introduced me to ideas I have for the most part not encountered before, it is his introduction to Talmudic scholars and mystics that is of even greater value to me. I'm glad I persevered through the book, but admit I probably wouldn't have if it weren't the next book we are reading in our Catholic parish book club!

The book received somewhat positive reviews in our Catholic parish book club. While one member did not like it at all, the others did with the reservation that Schroeder looks at the issue from a perspective quite differently from the way Catholics generally do. But for the most part, we appreciated seeing a different perspective.

Makes sense of both cosmic (universal) time and of human history time

Schroeder provides a rational explanation for the six Biblical days that encompass the 15 billion year time period in Genesis from the creation of the universe to the time when Adam became human by receiving his soul. He then shows how the Bible changes the time scale to "human "time",for the rest of Genesis account. By so doing, Schroeder has provided a rational and understandable basis for accepting the fundamental truth of the Bible. While his explanations take us into deeply into Einstein's law of relativity, and require some understanding of quantum mechanics, his explanation are both lucid and captivating! This book has helped me greatly in accepting the inerrancy of Holy Scripture.

Schroeder Misinterprets Jewish Sources

Beware - most Gentiles (and many Jews) are not familiar with the Jewish sources Schroeder uses, or rather abuses. He quotes them out of context, misreads them or misinterprets them. check out these two links for example.
alter cocker jewish atheist blog spot com december 2013 for an honest report of the jewish sources Schroeder misquotes (mainly about chapter 9) . It is from someone in the know - a former yeshiva bocher.

Another MUST read book by a renowned physicist!

This escellent book on "The Science of God" does physics of the evolution of the universe a great compliment with its explanation which also is in agreement with the Biblical book of Genesis 6:3 and Psalms 90:10, which when taken together and using Einstein's Time Dilation equation yields that the universe was expanding during Adam and Eve"s time at about .743c or about 3/4s the speed of light and in keeping with Schroeder's prediction about how the universe was actually created in 6-24hour non-relativistic days (or about 14 billiion years in actuality). The actual time predicted today by physicist/cosmologists is more close to 13.6 billion years still easily explained by a slight readjustment to Schroeder's explanation. Allen Reeves, retired DoD physicist.

The Science of God. A careful and well written insight into the relationship between Science and God

This book is a discovery between Creation, the beginning of life, and the sense that their is direction and wisdom in the forming of the universe, our home, earth, and all life. G-d and science converge

An orthodox Jewish physicist reconciles the Biblical age of the earth and science.
I met Dr. Schroeder recently in Easthampton, New York and he impressed me with his knowledge of both Judaism and physics.
He also pointed to an article in Nature, one of the most highly regarded scientific journals in the world. The article on the bombardment of Israel by scud missiles attributed the extraordinarily low casualty rate in part to
"Luck." I think the article was published in 1991. In my humble opinion "luck" is G-d in action.
