Features & Highlights

  • The history of Guinness, one of the world's most famous brands, reveals the noble heights and generosity of a great family and an innovative business.
  • The history began in Ireland during the late 1700s when the water in Ireland as well as throughout Europe was famously undrinkable, and the gin and whiskey that took its place was devastating civil society.
  • It was a disease ridden, starvation plagued, alcoholic age, and Christians like Arthur Guinness, as well as monks and evangelical churches, brewed beer that provided a healthier alternative to the poisonous waters and liquors of the times. This is where the Guinness tale began.
  • Now, 246 years and 150 countries later, Guinness is a global brand and one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The tale that unfolds during those two and a half centuries has power to thrill audiences today including:

Perhaps not the best Guinness book for everyone

I would go two and a half stars if I could. Those portions of the book that deal directly with the company and its history are interesting, and inclusion of the material on that part of the family makes sense, particularly in light of the emphasis on the company's philanthropy. The writing style is breezy and easy; a high school level reader would have no trouble with it.

Now, i did read the title and subtitle before I bought it, so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised at the amount of god content, and again, from a certain perspective its inclusion makes sense. But being a lover of Guinness and an agnostic, I skimmed or skipped chunks of text. If you are thinking of buying the book and are mostly interested in the stout and the company you might consider Hartley or Yenne instead, but again, the stout/company-related material is interesting.

Thought Provolking Title

I haven't read nor purchased this book but might do so. Title is so appropriate since Guinness isn't just a beer. It is a holy sacrament! Need to learn about it's history.

Guinness's legacy

Good solid history of Arthur Guinness's legacy. Not just a history of beer, but of the families achievements.

Beer + Business + God = The Good Life :-)

Seriously, this a great detailed account that comes from what seems like an unbiased perspective as to the influence that religion, business, & beer have had on each other over the years.

Having worked in restauarants for years throughout school & now running my own business in pursuit of my own entrepreneurial greatness that's going to last beyond my years, this book left me feeling inspired.

Always remember that business isn't not just about profits. Instead it's about people, making the world a better place, investing in your community, & stay true to values & principles that last. Do this & follow the guided path that the Guiness family has put in place & you'll be well on your way to achieving lasting wealth.

It is definitely an acquired taste but now it is my favorite beer, if I can find it on draft

Interesting read. I was impressed by the fact that the Guinness Family applied their religious beliefs to some of their business practices. After I read the book I tried the beer. It is definitely an acquired taste but now it is my favorite beer, if I can find it on draft.
