I enjoyed it so much I didn't want it to end
I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.
I'm a fan of Rachael Herron and was eager to read her latest book. I started reading it and enjoyed it so much that I had to ration myself because I didn't want it to end! I hadn't read the first book in the series (don't know how I missed that - I'm reading that one next). This book can be read as a standalone. I finished reading it yesterday and really enjoyed how the Molly, the middle sister, came into her own.
The book touches on a couple of hard subjects - abuse and body shaming. I'm familiar with both. I like the way they were handled in the book. The characters are very likable - even with their flaws. They are not flat but are real to life. The sheriff was abusive in his ways, like his father before him. I won't say anymore about that - you have to read the book!
Rachael is getting better and better as a writer, which seems impossible since I adored her Cypress Hollow books so much. I can't wait to read more about Darling Bay.
I highly recommend this book. And have to several friends and family. :)

This was a really sweet romance with an interesting cast of sisters at the center and the hope that stems from taking something old and broken and making it new. I really enjoyed the main character, Molly, but her hero needed a little work. Colin is well-intentioned, but it takes a lot for a cop to warm my heart these days, and one who decides he's going to fix his stick-up-the-butt image by pulling people over for no reason and surprising them with donuts smacks too much of abuse, which, ironically, was a theme in this book as well. The same cop's sister is in an abusive relationship, and he attempts to solve this problem by... bullying her and being so physically intimidating that everyone involved in the situation is SURE he's going to physically attack the boyfriend. In other words, he acts like an abuser himself.
He's uncomfortable with his own behavior when it's pointed out, commits to changing, and doesn't actually become physically violent when opportunity presents... except when he arrests the town drunk for yelling at his crush and twists his arm too hard just because he's pissed off. I normally love Rachael Herron's stories and aside from the mishandled hero, I felt like the story itself flowed nicely and the other characters were mostly excellent. I also feel as if she was trying to do a good and important thing by attempting to address abuse in a romance novel, but for me, her hero walked too close to the line and it burned him for me.

love it!
I came to Rachael's books late....but once I discovered her I devoured each one. Why? Her writing is superb, her characters are real, the places are real, the conversations are real. Nothing seems trite or insipid as a lot of "romance" novels are. Even the situations her characters find themselves in are "real". This second book in the trilogy totally lived up to my expectations and I can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend this series and all of her books!

I love Rachael Herron's romances
I received an ARC of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.
What can I say, I love Rachael Herron's romances. They are light, easy reads that are meticulously written. Herron writes male characters that are human and relatable, unlike many romance authors. They love, hate, laugh and make mistakes all while treating women with respect. This shouldn't be as difficult to find in romance as it often is. Her female characters are similarly human and dimensional. There are no one note people in Darling Bay.
For me the highlight of this particular book is the way Herron writes about a woman's struggle with being "curvy". Collin loves Molly for her curves, but all Molly can hear are he voices of people who told he for years she needed to loose weight or was prettiest when her body was unhealthily slim. This is familiar territory for me. Molly's struggles could have been my own. And, the way those struggles affect her relationship are totally authentic. I loved this book because it was a pleasure to read and because it reminded me that my curves are beautiful too.

I really enjoyed The Songbird's Call by Rachael Herron.
Molly is one of three songster sisters who inherit a saloon, hotel and café from their great-uncle in a small beach town. Returning from working on a cruise ship, she is stunned to find out exactly how run down the whole place is, her older sister Adele has been restoring the saloon, bringing it slowly back to life, with her partner Nate. Molly decides to take on the derelict café and reopen it, along the way she helps the sheriff's sister earn freedom from her abusive boyfriend, and rediscover her self respect. Molly makes a bold decision to do something constructive about abuse, too.
Sparks fly between the small town's sheriff and Molly, but is the course of love ever easy? He is strong and bossy, she has weight issues that have plagued her throughout her life, and she detests being ordered around. Humor, conflict, hot sex, romance, mystery about the third sister, there is lots here to keep you turning the pages for more action. The Songbird's Call by Rachael Herron won't disappoint.

It was true escapism in the best sense of the word
I found this book to be a really enjoyable read! It was true escapism in the best sense of the word, which was exactly what I needed/wanted when this book came my way. The story of the sisters, new love, and domestic violence touched on subjects that are meaningful to me without feeling overwhelming or stressful which was somewhat surprising given the emotional nature of some of this material. I appreciated that the author did not shy away from weighty topics, and created a really meaningful message regarding survival and life. I looked forward to the moments that I could steal with this book and plan to read both the first and third books as soon as I can.
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for a review, and it did not change or impact what I have written here.

What a fun, heartwarming, romantic story!
To declare my biases up front, I receive a copy of this book for review (hence the early reading dates), and I have loved everything that Rachael Herron has written so far. I've read all of her books, both as herself and as Lila Ashe, and I have loved every one of them. She creates quirky and fun characters, strong female protagonists who are not afraid to make mistakes, and this book joins in good company books such as How to Knit A Love Song, and On the Market.
This book, the second installment in the Songbirds trilogy, tells the story of Molly Darling, the second of the Darling Songbirds, as she finally returns home from being a cruise ship dietitian, her journey of finding her place in the town she always saw as a solace, and coming to terms with some dark shadows in her past. Although this seems like a typical romance novel, the author fills the pages with lovely prose and likeable, real characters, as well as hidden twists and turns in the plot that will keep readers entertained for hours. I was so captivated by the story that I couldn't put the book down, and read the entire thing from start to finish without stopping. This book is for anyone who likes a good story, loves a good romance, or a feel-good coming-home novel. Note, this book does have some mature scenes that would not be appropriate for a younger audience.
