Nope

This book is ALL OVER THE PLACE. No coherent plot, world building feels non existent. I hate everyone. Basically this book was a big let down.
I gave it two stars because of the writing, and I could read what I did quickly.

Indian folklore and mythology

This book is full of mystery and adventure. I enjoyed how Roshani Chokshi weaves in gorgeous settings and Indian folklore and mythology. I immediately felt connected to Maia and couldn't wait to see how her story would play out.

Beautiful written love story

This was an epic tale of love and forgiveness, betrayal and triumph. It brings the reader into a beautifully woven tapestry of fantasy and myth. At times I could feel my heart my throat and the pages could not fly fast enough because I became so thoroughly invested in the characters and their lives. This story is for those that believe that acceptance of self and love for others is what makes life worth living.

The convoluted writing makes it really hard to follow the plot

I just cannot stick with this author--she doesn't seem to know how to craft a story of even INCLUDE A PLOT. I don't mean this as an insult--but I think this author should write poetry, not novels. It was a chore to try to read this, as well as her other books, and I don't think the ability to be coherent is one of this young writer's strengths

Hades and Persephone feel

Had a Persephone and Hades feel. I love how the author made it an Arabic setting. The details were absolutely breath taking. She made you truly visualize every detail of her world. The main character had flaws and oh so very human. Although Maya at times annoyed me, she was a great character. She felt pain, betrayal, and even mistrust. When she first saw Amar, she didn't really trust him but felt like she had no choice but to go. Her father was a jerk. He loved her but not enough to save her from the gossip of the other wives and the hateful glances she had. I love how Amar showed her all that she could be, even if she didn't believe in herself. Though she eventually came into her own power and learned to trust herself and who she was. It was entirely human. Though she didn't trust Amar at first, she came to love him eventually. They both got over the betrayal and were able to forgive. She was able to save him, the otherworld, and herself.

Vague and drawn out mystical story.

Although the narrators voice is lovely, I found the story telling style very boring. To me the characters were not well defined. The protagonists problem seemed inflated and her personality not trustworthy so I could not stay engaged. The super vague fantasy/mystery dragged on and on.

Woah, didn't see THAT coming.

I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with this author from the first paragraph of this book. Dude. It is so interestingggg. All the pretty words that make you want to savor every sentence.

It took a huge storyline turn into crazy acid-trip land -- which I wasn't expecting AT ALL, but wasn't complaining about exactly because I've never in my life read anything like this, and because the details were beautiful and captivating. This IS fantasy after all.

I loved:
-all the juicy descriptions, although sometimes I wondered if Roshani Chokshi even knew what she was writing about bahaha
-Amar's love and the reveal of their love story
-the dialogue and actions of Kamala were hilarious

I didn't like:
-not knowing where the heck we were going (part one ended in a way that kept me up all night heartsick, and then part two started, and I was lost and a little confused about what was happening, but was along for the ride nonetheless).

You have to read this book. Roshani Chokshi is so talented with words, the descriptions come to life.

Promising Start, Disappointing After That

This novel had a strong beginning. Beautiful writing to begin with...and the character development was also SOOOO promising. However, after about a third of the way in, the whole story fell flat. The character development completely plateaued and did not redeem itself. It didn't deliver on plot. And I had to force myself to continue reading. I wonder why I encounter books like this in the YA genre quite often. You can tell the author spent so much time on the beginning of the novel....and then the rest of it felt rushed. I will be trying The Gilded Wolves by this author next. If I hadn't bought both at the same time, I can't be sure I would have come back to this author for another book.
