Not Because I Didn't Like The Book...

...just a response to the negative reviews. I've read LOTS of books, especially lately, that are totally "Woke" and definitely written, leaning left or way left, yet my conservative ways don't feel at all threatened by a work of FICTION. Why is it that liberals feel that conservatives are the only ones who believe "conspiracy theories"? Just look at the conspiracies that the liberal media spins. For one, "Russian collusion" comes to mind.

Nowhere did I read that "The Terminal List" was a speculative work. Like I mentioned above, it is a work of FICTION. Losing touch with reality and not being able to differentiate, fact from fiction, is something people need to keep in check. On both sides.

A hero to cheer for

There seems to be a trend in movies lately to make characters gray. They're not bad, but they're not really all that good, either. With so many gray characters out there, it can be refreshing to find a hero you can cheer for without any reservations. Jack Carr provides that kind of character, telling a satisfying story about a good guy who wears the whitest of white hats and where the villains are unequivocally deserving of everything they're gonna get. His hero is sympathetic, and if Carr uses cheap tricks to create sympathy, remember that it's a thriller, not literary fiction.

I grew up on the likes of Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum, and while it's been a lot of years since I've read anything by either, Carr's writing, in comparison, feels more straightforward. Where Clancy might spend chapters setting up a villain and the rest of his book sending Jack Ryan on a hunt for the villain (or for the Red October, as the case may be), Carr cuts right to the chase, drops you right in the action, and through quick flashbacks fills in the gaps. It makes for an easy page-turner, a perfect novel for warm summer evenings. I listened to it while I was mowing the lawn and then read it late into the night after lights out so I could see what happened.

With The Terminal List, you know who the bad guys are almost from the beginning and the only question in your mind is how are they going to meet their demise? Carr sounds like he knows his subject well; he is, after all, a former Navy Seal himself, and every page feels authentic, sometimes violently so: James Reese is a Seal and he's getting revenge--he's not filing lawsuits here. Expect explosive and deadly results as he deals with the conspirators with extreme prejudice.

Unfortunately, I read The Terminal List right before watching Chris Pratt play the role on Amazon, and it was a disappointment. The changes for the show just don't improve the plot. Jack Carr had it right the first time, and I'm a big fan of not messing with a good thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The Terminal List was a fun way to close out the summer, and I think I'll try out the sequel to see what Carr does with his character. There were few loose ends in The Terminal List, so I'm predicting that James Reese becomes something of a one-man A-Team. "If you have a problem if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... the A-Team."

Could have been a terrific story if the delivery wasn't so vile

The story and plot were awesome but the language, with F-bombs liberally thrown in, and violence, especially some of the 'scenes' that were of such a graphic and sexually gratuitous nature, that it ruined the experience of the story. It was unnecessary roughness toward the reader. As a wise teacher once said, "Use your words." Our language is so rich and colorful that using such purulent language is short-sighted and juvenile, regardless of the nature of the story.

Heart pounding, you won’t want to put this one down!

This book was amazing!!! It’s not the typical book I would read, but I heard about Jack Carr and was interested to see what he was writing about. As a former navy seal, he has many experiences & stories. He created a fictional plot in this book that was mind blowing.

I could NOT put this down once I started. The plot development is amazing and there is so much information being beautifully described. I’ve never had a book literally make my heart race page to page, it kept me THAT on edge. Blood pressure up lol

TW, there are some tough topics in here but book that can make me cry more than once is at least 4 stars always!!! I give this 5, and I’m excited to read more of Jacks books eventually. Couldn’t read another one right away because it’s definitely a heavy book. Would recommend to anyone who wants to switch up their reads!!!

Don't get

I normally like books about special forces troops and what they do. But this is an entirely ultra right-wing book that seems to think that every government official is a left-wing socialist tree-hugging person giving all jobs and opportunities to women, gays, Jews, and immigrants. And because of that, he has the right to kill all of them based on his personal opinion about life. Geez. Please, do not buy this book.

This right here...

This was a great read! I have not sat and enjoyed a book in such a long time and I am happy I did so with Jack Carr's The Terminal List. I saw the 8 episode show on Amazon first and then started listening to the episode break downs on his YouTube channel (JackCarrUSA). Jack did an amazing job with this book and while there are multiple scenes that are different in the book verses the show, it works out great. I have listened to Jack read negative reviews on this book and it kind of makes me laugh. Obviously as a Navy SEAL Jack is going to go into great detail on weapons - which I loved! Every time that he mentioned a brand name I looked it up - from coffee (Black Riffle Coffee Co) to a fleece (which I can't remember the name of right now). I am very excited to purchase and read all the books in the series.

3.5 Stars for this military revenge thriller; too political at time and sadistic

After viewing the Amazon Prime adaptation of this novel starring Chris Pratt as the protagonist, Navy SEAL LCDR James Reece, I was intrigued enough to order the book and give it a try. From what I can recall of the show, it seems to have followed the book pretty closely.

This story is focused on the primary plot; a unit of the US Navy SEAL’s unwittingly has been used as guinea pigs in a test of an experimental drug that would preemptively block the effects of PTSD. Facilitated by the greedy Secretary of Defense and her Senator husband along with the corrupt admiral in charge of the SEAL’s and a few morally bankrupt big pharma business types when it is discovered the drug causes fatal brain tumors drastic measures are called for. LCDR Reece and his team are sent on a mission where they are set up to be killed covering up the evidence of the botched drug trial. Reece survives however and returns home where he is blamed for the mission failure. While undergoing a medical exam for his increasingly debilitating headaches his home is invaded and his wife and young daughter are murdered. Reeling from his recent tragedies Reece soon enough figures out what’s going on and embarks on an epic journey to avenge his SEAL brothers and his family taking out everyone responsible on his “terminal list” while dodging a nationwide manhunt.

If you like revenge tales then “The Terminal List” will likely satisfy you. Author Jack Carr who is a retired SEAL, brings legit authenticity to his narrative with accurate weapon descriptions and tactical savvy which often eludes other authors of this genre who are not military veterans. I do agree with his dislike of the former standard issue Beretta 92F 9mm pistol and his favoring the Glock 19 over the current Sig Sauer which is Reece’s ‘go-to’ sidearm. Personally I thought he got a little carried away with some of the gruesome and creative ways he dreamed up for Reece to dispatch some of the bad guys.

Two things were troubling for me reading this book; the first is that Carr cannot restrain himself from wearing his political heart on his sleeve. Multiple times he indulges in mini-rants about the evil Democrats, liberal leaning admirals, “hard-left” Democratic presidents, government overreach, and “failed liberal policies promoting an entitlement culture” and so on. When I read a novel I want to be entertained and escape reality, if I want political commentary (and I don’t) I can always go online or watch the news.
The other thing is the heavy product placement for everything from Echols Legend rifles (that run $15K), Gatorz sunglasses, EOTech and Trijicon gunsights, Arc’teryx jackets, Dynamis Razorback knives, etc. I suppose Carr wanted to promote brands he used when on the teams as a thank you, but after a while it feels more like advertising than part of the story. There are also 9 pages of acknowledgements; they say it takes a village…but wow, that’s a lot of folks to thank for one book.

For a debut novel Jack Carr does a pretty impressive job with “The Terminal List”. The pacing is good, the plot is engaging and the author stays on target with it and doesn’t get mired in trying to spin other subplots. Carr has a good ear for dialog and the characters sound like real people and not like some AI chatbot. The fact that his very first book was optioned by Amazon Prime and turned into a hit series with a Hollywood A-list star speaks volumes. Carr has written four more books in the James Reece saga and Amazon Prime has greenlit a second season based on book #2, “True Believer” that will probably air in 2024.

I’ve got “True Believer” on my shelf; hopefully Carr dials back some of the politics and does a little less advertising for his favorite brands. There are many, many writers out there with military pedigree who write similar stories and Jack Carr is among the better ones with the potential to grow and improve.

Exciting read

I'd never heard of this until a friend told me about the TV show. I highly recommend however, reading the book before viewing the film. I particularly enjoyed the introduction, where the author cites his professional special forces experience. As a U.S. Navy vet and firearms aficionado, I found the main character's actions to be authentic. Additionally, I found it refreshing to find a modern book published without any of the grammatical errors that are common to today's world of publishing. This is a fast-past, action-packed adventure-thriller. And it provides a real-world view of the machinations of current military-industrial complex, and overreach of corrupt government officials and bureaucrats, but aside from all that, it is an excellent read.

Ugh

I couldn’t even get through this book. The constant annoying abbreviations, the political hate, the far fetched plot. Rent this one from a library if you’re so inclined. I’ll stick to other authors.

You won’t put this book down. 👍🏼

Loved this book and have deep respect for the author. I haven’t picked up a book since high school, but that has changed. This grabbed me from page 1. Can’t wait to finish the series. Keep in the fight Mr. Carr and thank you for your service. 🇺🇸
