Description

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—When you move to a new school, you get to decide who you want to be: front-row kid, kid with cool shoes, or smart kid. Miles Murphy has moved to a new town and a new school, but he doesn't want to reinvent himself. He wants to be who he has always been; a prankster. The problem is, that role has already been taken by a troublemaker who is even better than Miles, Niles Sparks, masquerading as a do-gooder. Niles respects Miles' skills and suggests they join forces as The Terrible Two. Initially disinterested, Miles ultimately realizes he is no match for Niles, and they work together to pull off the ultimate prank and develop a close friendship. Coauthors and friends Barnett and John have created a fast paced, laugh-out-loud novel sure to appeal to those who appreciate a good prank and have a sense of justice. The caricaturelike protagonists, particularly the childlike adult characters, add to the absurdity of the book, and the evolving relationship between the Miles and Niles is pure fun. Cornell's varied graphics perfectly capture the humorous tone and add their own comic appeal. This is a good candidate for reluctant readers and a natural next read for fans of Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series.—Juliet Morefield, Multnomah County Library, OR "Fluffy, fast, fun reading for fans of Clueless McGee and the Wimpy Kid."― Kirkus Reviews "Barnett and John are in perfect comic harmony."― Publishers Weekly "Coauthors and friends Barnett and John have created a fast paced, laugh-out-loud novel sure to appeal to those who appreciate a good prank and have a sense of justice...a good candidate for reluctant readers and a natural next read for fans of Jeff Kinney’s 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series."― Juliet Morefield, Multnomah County Library, OR , School Library Journal "With plenty of humor, quirky characters, interspersed drolly-related cow factoids, and fantastical, over-the-top pranking, this entertaining, enjoyable read will especially appeal to Wimpy Kid aficionados."― Shelle Rosenfeld , Booklist "Well-paced for pleasure reading, this lively start to a new series provides great insight into social dynamics—as well as prank planning and execution!"― Julie Roach , The Horn Book Magazine Mac Barnett is a New York Times bestselling author of books for children, including Extra Yarn , which won a 2013 Caldecott Honor, and Battle Bunny . Fabulous vocabulary, fabulous plot, fabulous book!

I love Mac Barnett. Extra Yarn is one of our favorite picture books of all time. I bought this as a bedtime book to read aloud to my 6-year-old daughter. We both loved it! In fact the whole family loved it! This book did not stay relegated to bedtime for long. We cuddled on the couch on a Saturday afternoon and read it. I started taking it whenever we were in the car to read while my husband drove. You will not want to put this book down; it is just that fun. It is also deceptively simple. The sentences are relatively short and easy to read with a lovely flowing cadence. However, the concepts are sometimes fairly deep. This book never fell victim to the obvious or to the juvenile potty humor that I hate. And the vocabulary, completely fabulous! This gave me the opportunity to teach my daughter several new vocabulary words. I definitely love that! It is practically impossible to find a funny book with such great use of words! I highly recommend this book. We are moving on to the The Terrible Two Get Worse!

Gold. Pure gold.

This book is brilliant. BRILLIANT! So funny, so gripping, and so expressively illustrated. A great book for any age, even someone in their early 40's. (Don't judge me...). I look forward to more amazing works from these fantastic authors.

You can't go wrong with two genius pranksters!

Summary: Miles is the new kid at school. He’s hoping to establish himself as the best prankster there, a title he held in his last school. His pranks keep backfiring, though, and he finally learns why: Niles, the apparently goody-two-shoes kiss-up kid is actually a prankster extraordinaire in disguise. The two eventually put aside their differences and team up to become “The Terrible Two”, eventually bringing their nemesis Principal Barkin to his knees.

What I liked: You can’t go wrong with a prankster, and two pranking geniuses are sure to be appreciated by the elementary school crowd. Both Miles and Niles have their different charms, and humor abounds throughout the story. Short chapters and plenty of illustrations will keep reluctant readers engaged.

What I didn’t like: The whole slacker-kid-outwitting-the-adults thing has become practically its own genre, spawned by the wimpy kid. I’m ready to move on to something new for reluctant boy readers.

A fun read for the family

A fantastic book, my 8 year old really enjoyed the thought that someone can be more than what is initially perceived. The pranks really captured his imagination, and he often recalls the various mischief the terrible two got into.

Two Stars

I would rather this have been humorous instead of "making fun" of in a bullying way.

This book made my kid love reading.

This is the second book my son has read from cover to cover, and I think he read it in a week. I couldn't tell you what the book was about, by my son was laughing out loud, and telling stories about the pranks the kids in the book pull on each other like he was talking about his own friends. In fact, I think he feels like they're his friends. When he finished this book, he immediately asked for more books. That's never happened before.
I am eternally grateful.

Engaging book

My 9 year is devouring every page. He keeps on summarizing to us all pranks and events he thinks are funny! He chuckles alone while reading. I guess what else to ask from a book!

Definitely not for under 9 (at least).

Not for younger than 9 at least. This book was assigned by our 1st grade teacher. This book is full of ideas And scenarios our family would not have been exposed to and words our family would never use. We do not use words like stupid and dumb loosely, which they use frequently. we would never have exposed our kids vivid scenarios of how be tricksters, physical bullies, threatening other kids and in general sassy smart alecs. Though there are kids in 1st grade that may have these things happen in their families they do not need any encouragement. This should not be a book assigned for 1st graders. We seriously consider what we feed our imaginations and fully understand that kids will act out what they are shown. This is not ok for younger kids.
Gave it two stars for the skill of the reader of the audiobook.
