Description

"The authors' intimate style; translated by Martin Aitken, yields character studies of emotional depth and intensity." - The New York Times Book Review "Like Sjöwall and Wallöö's Martin Beck (an acknowledged influence) and Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander, Simonsen is a typical Scandinavian noir protagonist, brooding and filled with self-doubt . . . [He] will keep his faithful readership turning the pages and looking for more." - New York Journal of Books "A deftly written procedural with clear appeal for fans of Scandinavian crime fiction, particularly those who delight in riveting investigative detail and psychological intricacies." - Booklist "If you haven't picked up on this fine, addicting series yet, there is still time to do so in its early days . . . I recommend that you jump on now, particularly if you are a fan of Nordic noir." - Book Reporter "The reader can't help but be held rapt . . . [This is] the kind of novel you'll read again, marveling at the care the Hammer siblings have taken in constructing Simonsen's fictive world." - Spectrum "Several factors elevate The Girl in the Ice above the run-of-the-mill police-procedural maniac-murderer hunt . . . Cultural and personal wisdom . . . permeates the book." - The Wall Street Journal on THE GIRL IN THE ICE "Outstanding crime thriller. Everything works in this dark Scandinavian procedural--the intelligent and complex plot, the fallible lead, and the atmospheric prose." - Publishers Weekly on THE HANGING "The Hammers have struck a chord with European readers, and The Hanging is seen as Denmark's answer to successful Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic crime fiction. U.S. crime lovers will likely want to stick a pin in Denmark on their crime-fiction maps." - Booklist on THE HANGING "Serious, complex novel by a Danish brother and sister raises disturbing issues." - The Times, on THE HANGING "The best Danish crime fiction in years. We are already looking forward to the next book in the series." - Lars Kepler, on THE HANGING "Enough twists and turns for even the most fervent of thriller fans." - Irish Times on THE HANGING LOTTE AND SOREN HAMMER are siblings. A Price for Everything is the second book in a series following Detective Konrad Simonsen and his team. Their first book, The Hanging , was published in English inxa02013. The writing pair have a huge following throughout Europe.

amateurish

I can't really understand why the novels from this duo get beyond an editor, let alone published. I guess it is because the start is usually an interesting premise but the story then veers off into incomprehensible and then just boring.

Slow Moving

Detective Superintendent Konrad Simonsen has returned to duty after recovering from a heart attack and is given the job of re-investigating the death of a postman from a fall. He soon discovers a link to a long time missing girl. This leads to a complicated inquiry with an interesting cast of characters. Unfortunately, Simonsen also thinks about his unrelated activities at the time of the disappearance. His reminiscences lead to confusion for the detective and the reader. The story ends up too long and too difficult to follow.

Twists

I find winter to be an ideal time to be entertained by Scandinavian crime fiction. I picked up a novel titled, The Vanished, by Lotte and Soren Hammer, and was delighted by the plot twists and depth of character development. Detective Chief Superintendent Konrad Simonsen gets a new case when he returns to work following recovery from a heart attack. The pace of the novel may be more plodding than crime readers are accustomed to, but that rhythm gives readers ample time to get to know the protagonist and see his complexity. The mystery is interesting and involves enough twists to satisfy most crime fiction readers.
