Description

"Shantideva's work is required reading for an understanding of Tibetan Buddhism, and the clarity and crispness of this new translation makes it an accessible way into the world of Tibetan Buddhism."— Publishers Weekly From the Inside Flap reat classics of Mahayana Buddhism, The Way of the Bodhisattva ( Bodhicharyavatara ) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment, and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the bodhisattvasx96those beings who renounce the peace of an individual salvation and vow to work for the deliverance of all beings, and to attain enlightenment for their sake. The text is beloved by Buddhists of all traditions.Originally written in India in Sanskrit, the text first appeared in Tibetan translation in the eighth century. The fact that it has been expounded, studied, and practiced in Tibet in an unbroken tradition lends the Tibetan version of the Bodhicharyavatara a particular authority. The present version has therefore been translated from the Tibetan, following a commentary by the Nyingma master Kunzang Pelden, renowned for its thoroughness, cl Shantideva was a scholar in the eighth century from the monastic university Nalanda, one of the most celebrated centers of learning in ancient India. According to legend, Shantideva was greatly inspired by the celestial bodhisattva Manjushri, from whom he secretly received teachings and great insights. Yet as far as the other monks could tell, there was nothing special about Shantideva. In fact, he seemed to do nothing but eat and sleep. In an attempt to embarrass him, the monks forced Shantideva's hand by convincing him to publicly expound on the scriptures. To the amazement of all in attendance that day, Shantideva delivered the original and moving verses of the Bodhicharyavatara. When he reached verse thirty-four of the ninth chapter, he began to rise into the sky, until he at last disappeared. Following this, Shantideva became a great teacher. Read more

Jewel of Nalanda - The Bodhisattva Way

What can be said about this classic text of Mahayana tradition that has not been said already?
Anyone who wishes to embark in the path to Awakening, is obliged to study and meditate on this text that describes the complete Bodhisattva training and lifestyle.

At first glance the text is a passionate rendered to the Bodhisattva way of life, with several passages that are rather extreme and odd for our common mentality, but it's not possible to fathom the whole depth of it without the Lung and Ter (energy and commentary) transsmision from an authentic Lama. Take into account that this was written in a long gone age, for monastic communitys so not necessarily is going to be a pleasant reading.

At least buddhist practitioners should be read it accompanied by Kusang Pelden's commentary [[ASIN:159030439X The Nectar of Manjushri's Speech: A Detailed Commentary on Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva]] .

Essential text, but not for beginners

People new to the Dharma should probably hold off reading this as the concepts and terminology are geared toward the committed practitioner. If you have a good grasp of boddhichitta and strong will to follow the Bodhisattva path, then this book is essential reading.
