Description

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 3-This gentle tale celebrates the power of the Mass in the Roman Catholic faith. A shabby, penniless old woman enters the baker's shop as he is preparing luscious creations for the king's wedding, which is about to take place in the city cathedral. Few are expected to attend, however, because the populace has grown cold and neglectful about their faith. When the baker refuses to give the old woman even a crust of stale bread, she offers to say a Mass for him, in exchange for food. Scoffing, he writes "One Mass" on a tiny piece of paper, places it on his scale, and tries to overbalance it with heaps of his finest pastries, but to no avail. The Mass outweighs them all. Chastened, he and his customers hurry to the cathedral to renew the practice of their beliefs at their monarch's marriage. The text, which was inspired by an actual event recounted by a priest in Luxembourg, is written in a lilting, storytelling style and teaches its lesson sweetly. Double-page spreads of warm-toned watercolors are filled with swirling action and show charming, doll-like people in Victorian dress. Features & Highlights

  • When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king’s wedding mass as payment for the baker’s generosity. The baker writes “One Mass” on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town’s surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a mass. Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story. This has been a best-selling children's book since it was first published. It us often made into plays for catechises, or used in homilies, and read on YouTube, and on private sites and channels.

Seriously- One of the most beautiful books I've ever read.

I first found this book a few years ago on our communal book shelf in college (one of my roommates had received it as a gift when she came into the Church our sophomore year). Intrigued, I sat down to read it since it I had a few minutes and it wad short. 20 minutes later another of my roommates came home to find me sitting on the couch crying as I finished the last few pages (I am not a cryer, it was weird). This book is stunning in both it's message and illustration! It is absolutely touching, and even more remarkable when I read it was based off a true story. It gently and beautifully reveals the message of how priceless the Mass is in a way both children and adults can appreciate (I'm still not a cryer and I still cry when I read it). It's now our family's go-to gift for celebrating Sacraments regardless of the . . . Sacramentee?'s age.

I definitely like this book

I definitely like this book; I bought it as a gift for my godson and will purchase it again when my one-year-old gets older. It is about a beggar widow who goes into a fancy bakery, asks for a crust of bread, and then refuses. She then suggests that she offer up a mass for the baker in exchange for the bread. The baker writes "one mass" on a slip of paper, puts it on one side of a scale, and then finds that nothing can even begin to move the scale.
I really liked the ending - the widow admits to the baker's son that she, too, undervalued the mass because she bargained with it for a crust of bread and not more.
I think this book will provoke great discussion, and it has gorgeous illustrations. I give it four stars instead of five because I think the text itself could be a little clearer in place.

Must read for all Catholic children and adults!

How beautiful and proud we should be to be Catholic! This writer weaves a beautiful tale for each Catholic to be able to share and be proud of. The author and artist both should be praised and commended for this truly enjoyable story of how the Mass is truly important and significant to everyone.

I have no children of my own, but I will certainly give this book at baby showers and to those receiving their First Holy Communion. God be praised and adored!

Beautiful story but not very well written

Beautiful story but not very well written: syntax isn't very good so the story doesn't flow as well as it could.

Beyond a Children's Book

This is more than just a children's book. It is something very special and beautifully illustrated that caters for the child that lurks inside all of us. The simple story touches not just on human faith but issues of the heart that will promise to bring a lump to your throat at the end of it. If you have young children, read it to them. If you don't, find a quiet moment and read it aloud to yourself. I promise you, it's really good for the soul. A wonderful gift this Christmas or any time.
