A really useful reference for a goat owner OR a FRIEND of a goat owner!

I've had goats for less than a year, and as a dedicated nerd I've read all sorts of books about their care, and dairy etc... I'm not sure why I picked this up but it's a really nice source of information on the various things you can do with your goat and goat by-products. I have two Nigerian Dwarf goats, so I'm mostly interested in the dairy/cheese side of things - but the recipes for goat meat (ohhhh sad!) have worked great with my venison. I also find the sections on crafting interesting and I've decided to venture into so soap making! There is more than I care for in here about knitting and felting - but that's my problem not the books! Plus after reading through it, I've saved the cashmere (undercoat) this spring so I have a nice bundle of the stuff to use either for felting or I could spin it*.

Good: Clean layout
Beautiful Photography
Easy to follow directions
Lots of ideas will be generated as you read through this!

Bad: Too much felting (just me?)
I'd like more cheese recipes - some cheese are pictured but there isn't a corresponding recipe :(

*Most likely it will take up a place in the garage and terrify whomever has to clear out my house when I die - surely they'll think it's a mummified cat or something!

Missing Step in Recipe!

My timeline:
Raise goats to breedable age...6 months
Breed goats and wait for kids....150 days
Milk kicking goats for 5 days straight to get enough milk to make soap..
Spend over $100 in soap making supplies according to recipe requirements...
Finally have a day off for 4th of July and prepare everything to make soap...
Realize directions do no say what to do with the required 1/2 pound of lard I melted!!!!
Way to go, editor and recipe supplier...you ruined my one day off this summer.

Poor recipes for all goat milk products! Big disappointment.

Don't waste your time and money. Huge disappointment! Recipes are few and far between. More everything you should know about goats before you ever have them. I have them, I wanted to benefit from their milk. This book is not it!

OK book for beginners

Too much information on raising goats and not enough on value added products. I know how to raise goats; I was looking for a book filled with recipes and more in-depth on how to on those recipes.

ALMOST the whole goat

Very good book, but I wish it covered more on the slaughter and butchering process for meat goats, since I am raising goats for that purpose. Also a few more soap and lotion recipies would have been helpful.

Recipes are just terrible

I would not recommend this book for anyone looking to make goat products! I used the recipe for the Traditional Goat Milk Soap and it’s just plain wrong! I wish I knew better or read the other reviews before trying this. First, it has you melt a half pound of lard only to never mention the lard again so you have no idea what to do with it! Second, I removed my soap from its mold and it completely crumble apart. We posted it to a soap making Facebook group, and received a lot of comments letting us know that the recipe is incorrect, and the measurements are completely wrong! I will not be trusting any of the other recipes in this book if even the most “simple” one is useless. Don’t waste your time or money!

Just what I was looking for.

I haven't read the whole thing, but browsed the chapters I was interested in. What I've seen so far is exactly what I was hoping for. In fact, I've already purchased my lye to make soap and a drop spindle for spinning. I'm looking forward to some down time so I can really get into this book.

I could never hurt one of my sweet girls.

I purchased this book to help me with a few new ideas for my goat milk. I've tried several and it's all been a hit. The information in the book is interesting. It covers how to cook goat as well as how to use the hair for crafting. However I will just stick to the goat milk chapters. I could never hurt one of my sweet girls.
