Description

"Devin Hunter's new book digs deeply into the roots of what makes a witch powerful. He doesn't gloss over the soul-searching work with simple spell "bandaids." Instead, he offers readings and exercises that empower the witch in mind, body, and soul."―Courtney Weber, author of Brigid: History, Mystery, and Magick of the Celtic Goddess "You may or may not choose to follow the path that he has laid out exactly, but I'll wager that you will find something that you want to borrow into your practices. True Witches use what works and you'll find much in this book that yields results."―Ivo Dominguez, Jr., author of Spirit Speak " The Witch's Book of Power is a missing link in modern witchcraft training. Readers will find just what they need to ignite the spark of power that all witches need for an effective practice."―David Salisbury, author of The Deep Heart of Witchcraft "Devin Hunter is this generation's Headmaster of Witchcraft."―Jacki Smith, author of Coventry Magic Devin Hunter is the bestselling author of The Witch's Book of Power , The Witch's Book of Spirits , The Witch's Book of Mysteries , the critically acclaimed Modern Witch , and Crystal Magic for the Modern Witch . Nothing New Here

I found the writing droll at best. The precepts are on an elementary level. It seems anyone can put on a pentacle these days, claim they're a witch and write a few books. This is the same regurgitated material nearly every other main stream new age pagan author has written.

Pass this one up.

Oh Boy, We Got The Next Silver Ravenwolf Here

I work in an occult bookshop, and the owner ordered in a few of Devin Hunter's titles after a recommendation. Today, I got to sit down with them. As a practicing witch of 13 years, I've seen quite a few variations in practices and beliefs regarding witches and magic. And yet of all the useless works I've read, only Silver Ravenwolf has managed to write something as poorly put-together as this book. The material in this title is so odd, so random, and so surface level that anyone who attempts to make real use of it is going to have a rough time.

Of the materials I've read in witchcraft in its various forms, I can't say I've found one that seems to be more self-aggrandizing than the "Witches Book of..." series by Devin Hunter. The works themselves seem hyper-fixated on jamming as many concepts into one title as can possibly fit, regardless of whether or not those concepts fit, make sense, or even get results. One example is the "test" whereby the witch may ascertain the nature of the spirits working with them through a couple of "on a scale of 1 to 5" type questions. This alone sets the individual up to begin fooling themselves if they have a mind to, and doesn't explain how one might go beyond what they are being told by spirits to truly see.

I also take LARGE issue with how much space was taken up by the "Cosmic Power" section, and yet for all its space it appeared to have nothing new, useful, or even deep. It's material we've all seen a thousand times, talking about how the moon on certain signs has certain meanings, and you should do certain spells in those signs, etc. It's the same thing we've seen printed over a thousand times in every astrology and witchcraft books since Agrippa. We get it, you write what you know, but is it really necessary to try and make it sound like anything less than astrology?

Then there's the "frequency" nonsense. We're talking about magic here, not radio waves, and it's easily one of the most annoying things about the title. Talking about all these different frequencies one needs to tap into, and yet when I did my training I never had to learn about some frequency pseudoscientific nonsense. I learned about the power itself. And that's all there was. There was not some overcomplocated talk of frequencies, there was no too-short descriptions of Gods and drawing made up "sigils" for them, there was only learning to connect. And if you learn to connect, then congratulations, you're a witch. Then, through that connection, you will find your own signs and seals. But don't use other people's seals, because you never know who they're really talking to...

Also LOVED the section where he thinks it's cool to mention Native American beliefs and how, even though he isn't native, he thought it was okay to pull from their beliefs if you think there are parallels.

I can say pretty confidently thag this is not a book of witchcraft, it's a book about how to imagine that you're powerful, without ever actually claiming any real power for yourself, backed up by the apparent fact that the only people who seem to be singing the praises of this book on the cover are from the same publisher. Books like this lead people into feeling lost, like there's too much to see, like it's far more difficult than it really is to actually reach into that secret place and draw the power of the world and make change.

Devin Hunter very clearly wants to be the next Silver Ravenwolf, but without realizing that he's already there. This book makes no sense to any witch who is already skilled or familiar with the world beyond, and will teach you weird, off-putting techniques that try way too hard to reinvent the wheel, when all you really have to do is listen.

Stick with something by Lee Morgan, or Kelden if you're really a beginner. But this book is just capitalism, through and through. Nothing of meaning, produced just for the sake of producing.

Powerful!

Reading this book gave me so much more confidence in myself, not only as a witch, but as a person in general. The exercises within could be done by anyone wishing to gain personal power. Devin's writing style is so easy to follow and I feel well guided at each step. I have read many books on witchcraft, but this one was a game changer for me!!
