Description

An Amazon Best Book of August 2019: Texan firefighter Cassie Hanwell loves her job and the men and women she works with at her Austin-based station. When Cassie’s estranged mother calls up out of the blue to ask Cassie to move to Boston to help her after an operation, Cassie reluctantly agrees, but her pending transfer to the nearby all-male fire station doesn’t worry her overly until her female captain in Austin starts offering advice: “If you make eye contact, make it straight on, like a predator.” “No sex with firefighters. Or friends of firefighters. Or relatives of firefighters.” “If your captain says to run a mile, run two.” As for pull-ups? “Do thirty, at least…. And make sure you can do at least a few one-handed.” Cassie hopes this advice will turn out to be anachronistic, but a fire station that’s never had a “lady” firefighter in 120 years adapts slowly. And reluctantly. Making the whole situation even worse is the rookie, the bighearted new guy whom all the other firefighters like far more than they do Cassie, though she’s clearly more skilled. And Cassie, to her horror, really likes the rookie as well. Funny, smart, and smartly paced, Things You Save in a Fire ignites around the topics of equality, love, redemption, and forgiveness even as it delivers an unforgettable protagonist who shows off not just “a few” but nine breathtaking, cheer-worthy one-handed pull-ups on her first day at work. —Adrian Liang, Amazon Book Review BookPage calls Katherine Center “the reigning queen of comfort reads.” She’s the New York Times bestselling author of over half a dozen books, including How to Walk Away , Things You Save in a Fire , and What You Wish For . Katherine writes laugh-and-cry books about how life knocks us down―and how we get back up. She’s been compared to both Jane Austen and Nora Ephron, and the Dallas Morning News calls her stories, “satisfying in the most soul-nourishing way.” Her books have made countless Best-Of lists, including RealSimple ’s Best Books of 2020, Amazon's Top 100 Books of 2019, Goodreads' Best Books of the Year, and many more. Bestselling author Emily Henry calls her summer 2022 book, The Bodyguard , “a shot of pure joy.” The movie adaptation of Katherine’s novel The Lost Husband (starring Josh Duhamel) hit #1 on Netflix, and her novel Happiness for Beginners is in production now as a Netflix original starring Ellie Kemper. Katherine lives in her hometown of Houston, Texas, with her husband, two kids, and their fluffy-but-fierce dog.

  • comes a stunning new novel about courage, hope, and learning to love against all odds.
  • Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's a total pro at other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to give up her whole life and move to Boston, Cassie suddenly has an emergency of her own. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew―even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the infatuation-inspiring rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that. Because love is girly, and it’s not her thing. And don’t forget the advice her old captain gave her:
  • Never date firefighters.
  • Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...and it means risking it all―the only job she’s ever loved, and the hero she’s worked like hell to become. Katherine Center's
  • Things You Save in a Fire

A Let Down

I had really high hopes for this book. The synopsis promised a strong female lead engulfed in a fiery romance with a fellow firefighter. I was hoping for a sizzling storyline but it fell flat on all fronts. Maybe it redeemed itself at the end, but truthfully, I couldn't force myself to get more than two-thirds of the way through.

Cassie is (supposed to be) a badass female firefighter who has really made a name for herself in the field. When her estranged mother calls asking for help, Cassie leaves her dream job to move to the East Coast to help her out. Not exactly a welcome addition to her new firehouse, at least Cassie has a handsome new rookie to look at. Learning to let go of the past and embrace love and forgiveness, Cassie reevaluates everything she thought she knew about life. Sounds promising right?

This story had so much potential. Unfortunately, the characters lacked depth and were impossible to connect with. The writing style is almost juvenile, reminiscent of a YA novel fresh off a college freshman's laptop. This was supposed to be a romance. I went in expecting romance, sexual tension, playful banter. You know, good old fashion chemistry. There was none to be found. Sure, we knew that Cassie had a crush on the rookie, but her utter avoidance of him killed whatever romantic tension could have been building from the get go. Then, they make out at a party. Big deal. People make out at parties all the time. It doesn't mean anything, but now all of a sudden we're supposed to believe that they have this incredible connection? Negative. None of it was believable. So, needless to say, the romance box remained discouragingly unchecked.

I will, however, give this book a little credit for being a sort of 'coming of age' tale for Cassie. She was forced to overcome some demons during the time spent with her mother. She matured a bit and stopped needing to hide behind the great deal of strength it takes to be a firefighter. Even though I didn't finish the book, I did see small signs of her personality softening.

Final verdict, if you're wanting romance, you won't find it in this book. And despite really wanting to root for Cassie, I was bored to tears. It's disappointing, but books like this just happen sometimes.

Not my favorite book

It was just an ok book for me. I felt it was sophomoric writing. The story could have went a few different directions to keep readers interested.

The Best Revenge is Forgetting

When life overwhelms me and I need to slow down, relax, and smile again, I reach for a Katherine Center book. Things You Save in a Fire gave me just what I needed.

Readers will love Cassie, a strong-willed woman who draws her line in the sand and stands ready to defend herself. She’s used to running at the problem, not away—perfect attitude for a firefighter. Just when she is excelling at her job, her estranged mother's health begins to fail, and she needs her daughter’s help. So Cassie moves to a new, all-male fire station and reluctantly steps back into her mother’s life.

Katherine Center is a romance devotee, and Cassie is bitten by the love bug, too. But be prepared for so much more than a romcom. This author’s writing is strong and yields substance and depth as she speaks to the themes that touch all of our hearts. More than being a wonderful storyteller, she teaches about life and the most important of lessons, like forgiveness. Early in the book, Ms. Center grabbed me with these words: “That’s how life is. Things happen. Lives get broken. Some people never can put themselves back together. I wondered if she would. I wondered if I would.”

This is a book that will bring smiles, giggles, and maybe a few tears. But most of all, you may think again about your own human connections and what may need to be set right again.
