May they find the same joy in dogs that their mother has found. It also is dedicated to all of my dog friends, past and present. They have been wonderful teachers. From the Inside Flap Almost every dog owner wants a stable, dependable canine companion to bond with in a rewarding relationship. That's a perfectly reasonable desire and a perfectly realistic one. And it's the reason for this dog training book.Rewarding relationships usually don't happen by accident. They happen because an owner cares enough to choose a companion wisely and then to expend the time and the patience that are necessary in training dogs to nurture his dog's inborn ability to provide friendship and companionship. It works, because the dog-human relationship is rare in nature; two distinct species that live in exceedingly close proximity and that communicate so readily and so well with each other.Dogs are amazingly adept at reading the subtle physical cues that we broadcast sometimes without even knowing it and that reveal so much about our state of mind. How many times have you heard a person say about her dog, "He's so amazing. He knows when I'm happy. He knows when I'm sad."And he does, of course. Dogs know a lot about us because they are able to read us almost as well as they read other dogs. With a little instruction, we can read them, also, which is what I hope to help you do. That skill begins with understanding how dogs think. My first exposure to dog training on a professional level occurred in Europe, where I lived for several years in my early 20s. It was my good fortune to study there under several masters of dog obedience training who shared skills that were derived from the classic dog training traditions of the Old World. Later I continued my studies in the United States, where I learned new ways of looking at old dog training problems and how best to find solutions for them.Since then I have been training dogs and their handlers successfully by the many hundreds, if not by the thousands, in a variety of skills ranging from simple dog obedience trainingxa0to highly complex behaviors. It has been a two-way street. These dog-and-handler teams have enhanced my education, too, by showing me clearly what works and what doesn't.What you will find in this dog training book is not academic theory. It is boots-on-the-ground information from a boots-on-the-ground professional dog trainer who has learned her craft in a painstaking way. This dog training book explains what works and why it works. It will help to put you inside the head of your canine companion and to understand the processes that go on there. Then it will show you how to make that information work for you. Whether you feel you are at a stage where you need dog training for dummies, or you believe you already are a dog whisperer, this book was written for you!The principles that I share with you about pet training, when properly applied, will reward you with a happy companion, a disciplined companion, and a fulfilling companion with whom you will be pleased to share your life. It is ideal for a new dog owner, or simply the owner of a new dog; anyone who is about to step up to the challenge of dog training and is searching among dog training books for the one that will show the way clearly and effectively. The market is full of dog training books, some good ones and many not-so-good ones. You are sure to be pleased with this one which, as its reader reviews indicate, has provided outstanding results to many grateful dog people. They have a fresh perspective on dog trainingxa0and people and life that is missing from everyone else. What s interesting is they re talking about how to deal with dogs, but this is not just about dogs it s dating and business and Thanksgiving dinner with the extended family. It s life in the guise of dog training, and it s HUGE. --- Colleen Mondor, dog-training client, Seattle, WA "A must-read for any dog owner! Dianna Young sxa0pet training style is right on the money. Somewhat Helpful Book

I enjoyed this book and did get some new ideas about training my dog but I can't say it helped me to "think like my dog." There were also a few of the training aids I didn't agree with.

Want a Dog or Puppy? Read this Book - Have a Dog or Puppy? Read This Book

I started reading this book a week after we lost one of our dogs to a car accident. I needed a distraction and what better distraction than reading a book that would help me be a better dog owner to the two dogs who were mourning with me.

Right away, I found myself saying "I wish I had this book 3 years ago." There were so many things about this book that helped me understand how our dogs think, why they do the things that they do, and it spotlighted a ton of mistakes I've made with our dogs.

What's so special about this book is that I never felt that I was a lost cause, because this is a great guide for dog owners, whether you're bringing home your first dog or you just found out that you're not really the leader of your pack (I'm the later).

I've purchased and downloaded several dog training and behavior books only to be disappointed, because they were either boring to read OR didn't give me any insight into how dogs think beyond what we already know. This wasn't the case with Think Like Your Dog. I'm a dog blogger and write several blog posts a week about raising our dogs and Think Like Your Dog has become my reference guide, helping me to better understand what may be going on in our dogs' heads when they do the things they do.

This book isn't preachy, it's engaging, and it shares loads of stories. By the time I was finished (the first time), I had a better understand of why our dog was hit by a car. I understood what we could of done to prevent it; but I never felt guilty either. I understood the dynamic of the dogs in our home. I was able to see where I reward fear based behavior in our dogs by giving them comfort when I should be giving them confidence. And I had a better appreciation of why dog training and socialization is important.

We know have littermate puppies (that makes 2 sets of littermates in our home) and what I learned in Think Like Your Dog has changed the way we're raising them and I think our puppies are coming along a lot faster than our adult littermates did when they were puppies. One of the biggest changes I've made is to stop coddling them, stop treating them like their tiny - furry humans (something I didn't think I was doing, but I was), and to allow them to be dogs and allow myself to be their leader.

If you're looking for a valuable book to add to your library, I highly recommend this one. Every dog owner should read this book (a couple times at least) and then see what a difference it makes in their relationship with their canine.

Excellent advice that's worth every penney!

I bought this book from Diana Young while taking my aggressive terrier for training. She helped me recognize that his aggression is fear based and how to recognize his signals. I'd had no idea that he was actually terrified. Her book explains how dogs need to be socialized and trained, and what healthy dog behavior is. It also explains mistakes dog owners can make and what can result. I recommend Diana's book to every new dog owner.

One of the best dog training books and with an index

Think Like Your Dog and enjoy the results by Dianna M. Young with Robert H. Mottram

I'm not a dog trainer. I don't even play one on my blog "The Poodle (and dog) blog." Mostly I rely on my dogs' strong verbal skills to keep order and decorum around Casa del Jan. Mostly it has worked.

I do enjoy reading dog training books though. Training should be on-going through the life of a dog. Military and law enforcement dogs are given regular training sessions and have to be re-certified from time to time.

Even for pet dogs, I'm sure we've all had the experience of having our dogs do something stupid that we thought they had stopped doing months or even years ago and they are all like

What? Am I not supposed to do that?

Think Like Your Dog is a book I recommend without hesitation to people who are training their first dog and to also to people who have a good idea of what they are doing.

Dianna Young has impeccable credentials, with decades of education and experience in animal behavior and dog training. She has written the book in collaboration with a prize winning author. The book is informative, entertaining and professionally written.

In Chapter One she reveals the fundamental truth about the way dogs think and behave:

In every dog-and-handler team, without exception, there is a leader and there is a follower.

If the human does not emerge as the leader, the dog is hard-wired to do so. She acknowledges that some people don't want to be the leader which is all right if they are prepared to live in a household ruled by a dog for 10-12 years. Unfortunately this often results in obnoxious dogs and frustrated humans or sadly, a dog turned into the shelter when the humans can no longer tolerate the behavior.

Of course exerting leadership does not involve public or private floggings. Punishments and impatience have a negative effect on the training process. Dogs need and want firm and consistent guidelines so that they can learn what is expected to fit into the pack. Dogs are masters at reading body language of humans and other dogs.

The book covers many topics on choosing and socializing a dog and solving behavior problems. She goes step by step showing methods of correction and reward through beginning, intermediate, and advanced training. Many pictures accompany the text. Her training advice is followed by examples and anecdotes from her long experience as a trainer as well as advice on when to consult a professional.

Many dog problems are really human problems.

She sites one example of a dog who kept going into the laundry room, stealing clothes from the floor and munching on them. The owners were afraid this was going to result in an intestinal blockage so they came to the author for training advice.

She suggested putting baskets on the washer and dryer out of reach of the dog, one for whites and one for colored clothes. Problem solved.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. However the people were not pleased. They were looking for a dog training solution, not a people one.

This is an excellent go-to book for a wide variety of information on all phases of living with a dog. And one of the best things is that it has an index for quick reference to a particular subject.

The main thing I have learned from reading dog training books is that not every approach will work with every dog-handler team. I will continue talk to my dogs in sentences, but it may be that through all my years with dogs, they have been smart enough to teach me their doggie non-verbal communication.

Whatever. It has worked to keep things serene around the estate...

Important lessons for dog owners!

I am almost done reading the entire book, and it helped me understand the mentality of dogs. I was feeling mean and bully-ish by always bossing my dog around, and I dislike it when someone tries to boss me. Now I can see that he's actually much more relaxed because he can just be a puppy dog rather than being responsible for us both. The.book makes training easier.

I have read and enjoyed "Think Like Your Dog and Enjoy the Rewards

I have adopted second hand dogs all my life, and only raised puppies occasionally. Ms. Young has covered every kind of dog behavior, and training issue that may arise, with the most positive results. I am owned by four dogs right now. All rescued, a Pit Bull, Australian Terrier, Chihuahua-Havanese mix, and a purebred Border Collie who was free in the local news-paper because she was not properly socialized when she was a puppy, she became a psycho dog, and difficult to train. This Border Collie had an impressive blood line, she was worth a try at behavior modification, and much love. Ms. Young used her extensive knowledge and training to help me have a wonderful companion and family dog.
With the information I received from reading Ms. Young's Book, I was able to apply it to "my Pack". Each dog enjoys the other's company, they eat together, walk together, and play together. Thank you, Ms. Young, for our big happy pack.

Dog Leader in Training

What a fantastic book!! Its easy to read and gives a clear understanding of the structural behavior of dogs. I've owned many rescued dogs and have learned from this book that its MY behavior that needs to change in order to offer them the real security and confidence they deserve. I will definitely use this book as a continuing reference and encourage my dog owner friends to purchase it.
