Description

From Library Journal This autobiographical potpourri by one of the screen's most renowned actresses begins in 1983 with Davis's mastectomy and stroke. From there her recovery is chronicled, along with flashbacks and observations of her long career and often turbulent personal life. She is direct and never self-effacing in retelling her story; and even this hodge-podge of a book is pure Davis, as her fans know her on screen and off. The book ends with an open letter to her daughter, B. D. Hyman, in reply to the latter's book, My Mother's Keeper. A good purchase for all film collections. (Photos not seen.) Virginia A. Reflective Rebuttal

"This 'n That" is an interesting potpourri of Bette Davis's thoughts after going through some of the most physically and emotionally painful periods of her life. Few would want surgery at age 75, and to suffer a stroke as a result, requiring rehabilitation to learn to eat, speak and walk again, and recover to resume her career, tells you a great deal about the amazing will that was the actress Bette Davis.

This book jumps from that stroke, to stories of her devoted assistants who endured the process with her, to acerbic one-liners about professional colleagues, to frank discussions of her marriages, to revelations about her movies, including stores about "Baby Jane" and "Sweet Charlotte."

But, since this book was written after after daughter B.D.'s imitation "Mommy Dearest" effort, it's not surprising that much of Bette's story focuses on (possibly one-sided) lost loving family times. And although Bette was clearly tough and uncompromising in her expectations, she took her perceived daughter's betrayals - a young marriage separating her from Bette, and then her tell-all book - very hard. I'm not sure we all needed to be a party to Bette's letter to B.D. at the end of "This 'n That," but there's bound to be drama in a book by an actress.

"A Lonely Life" was more detailed, and "Bette & Joan, The Divine Feud" (by another author) far more (delightfully) juicy, but this was a comfortable read. With 24 pages of photos.

Tit for Tat

Written late in her life it contains a few tid-bits about her experiences in final films, but I got tired of it being a love-letter to her companion Kath. Not really the tell-all expose it was touted as. A remarkable woman not well served by this book.
