Description

Review “Kristin Hannah readers will thoroughly enjoy the family dynamic, especially the mother-daughter relationships.” ― Booklist (starred review) “Barbara O’Neal’s latest novel is simply delicious. Engrossing, empathetic, and profoundly moving, I savored every sentence of this story of several very different women who find solace and second chances in each other after tragedy (though not before facing some hard truths and, yes, a few rock bottoms). This Place of Wonder is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.” ―Camille Pagán, bestselling author of Everything Must Go “I have never much moved in the elevated circles of California farm-to-table cuisine, but O’Neal makes me feel like I’m there. Rather than simply skewering the pretensions, This Place of Wonder pinpoints the passions. Some of these characters have been elevated to celebrity, some are newcomers to the scene, but all are drawn together by the sensuality, the excitement, and ultimately the care that food brings them. Elegiac but also forward-looking, this is a book about eating, but more than that, it’s a book about hurt and healing and women finding their way together. I loved every moment of it.” ―Julie Powell, author of Julie & Julia and Cleaving “ This Place of Wonder is a wonderfully moving tale about four women whose journeys are all connected by one shared love: some are romantic, some are familial, but all are deeply complicated. Dealing with loss, love, hidden secrets, and second chances, this stirring tale is utterly engaging and ultimately hopeful. Set along the rugged California coastline, This Place of Wonder will sweep you away with the intoxicating scents, bold flavors, and sweeping views of the region and transport you to a world you won’t be in any hurry to leave.” ―Colleen Hoover, #1 New York Times bestselling author About the Author Barbara O’Neal is the Washington Post , Wall Street Journal , USA Today , and Amazon Charts bestselling author of more than a dozen novels of women’s fiction, including Write My Name Across the Sky , The Lost Girls of Devon , When We Believed in Mermaids , The Art of Inheriting Secrets , and How to Bake a Perfect Life . Grim. If you’re a recovering alcoholic, don’t buy

Update: made it to page 173 & WOW! The story finally took off & pulled me in & I just finished it; I swore I would be in bed by 10:30 so I can be up at 5:00 am for the Queen’s televised funeral & I could not stop reading until I finished it . It’s now past midnight. I highly recommend this book. I cried, I laughed, and highly satisfied with the ending. It’s a good book. It’s real life. Leaving up my 1st review so you know what to expect in the first half.
Spoiler alert:
I am an avid reader as you can see by my bedside stack. My home is a bookstore. Not really but I have so many books it could be. I really wanted to like this book as I’ve read some of her previous books and have enjoyed them. But this story is just too grim & depressing. Maya gets out of rehab early because her father dies. And I swear if I didn’t drink before, the first few chapters would drive me to drink. I can’t decide whether to continue to plod thru this book or just chunk it? Was it a heart attack or murder? The beginning was promising, “cheating wealthy father (Augustus) dies, daughter in rehab, stepmom (ex-wife) (Meadow) has good relationship with her stepdaughter. Girlfriend (Norah) living in father’s mansion, gets thrown out by ex-wife so daughter can move in. Ex wife learns ex husband was with another woman when he died and it wasn’t current girlfriend. And always the back story is Maya’s struggle with alcoholism…..(I’m on page 167, so not sure of rest of book). There may be a secret in Meadow’s past so I can’t decide whether I want to finish reading to find out. But I don’t know if I can take it, so far this book is too grim & depressing.

Interesting summation toward the end

The characters somewhat held my attention but it wasn’t until the last couple of chapters that the author brought them all together. I thought about recommending to friends but concluded (for me) the story wasn’t captivating enough. So, disappointed in the story overall.

This Place of Wonder is about acceptance of love, relationships and eternal changes

I loved the passion for gardens, food preparation, diverse stories and the description of a home with shared history. The author captures the depths of love in imperfect relationships. The whole complicated nature of seeing a person with all of their flaws and still choosing to love - even in the face of betrayal is a genuine look at expansive kinds of love. Additionally, the women face addiction and recovery, self-fulfillment and discovery of identity/roles and how to rediscover self when the journey itself pulls the rug out from underneath the characters. It was the warmth of the women who all loved a charmingly charismatic and brilliantly flawed man that made the story compelling for me. Engaging and relevant stories about how women support each other are where it is at Ms. Barbara O’Neal! Thanks for sharing your gifts.

More, Please

The main problem with This Place of Wonder is that it comes to an end. I want it to continue. This was the kind of book that the closer I got to the end the more often I would put it down because I didn’t want it to end! I’ve been reading Barbara O’Neal for ages and am never disappointed. She brings us people we can relate to and love; people who sometimes disappoint us because they aren’t perfect, but they are real.

This Place of Wonder might be her best so far. I wouldn’t mind if it turned into a trilogy.

Not great

This book dragged with the same content over and over again. How angry one daughter was, how one sister was soooo sad, how a mother, had demons. Every chapter was the same over and over. Not to mention the add in of same sex relationships.
