Description

From Publishers Weekly Coston, a news editor at the Wall Street Journal , has reconstructed the rampage of Wayne Nance, a Montana psychopath who in daily life appeared polite and generous but who committed at least four brutal sexual murders over 12 years. Police did not thoroughly pursue Nance, who was a neighbor of the first victim and placed by witnesses near the murder scene. He certainly gave cause for concern: in childhood he had displayed a sadistic streak; he collected knives and swords and had branded a pentagram on his arm. After a troubled stint in the Navy, Nance returned home to a job in a furniture warehouse, which gave him entree into many homes and the opportunity for deadly deeds. Coston's story proceeds to a suspenseful climax in which Nance finally meets victims who fight back and kill him. Though the narrative sometimes seems choppy with flashbacks and background on victims, Coston effectively conjures up the tense atmosphere of small-town Missoula. He theorizes superficially about Nance's dysfunctional family and the nature of serial killers, but his lack of psychological insight doesn't get in the way of a good tale. Photos not seen by PW. I'm anonymous in this book

I'm one of the 3 only survivors of Wayne Nance's rein of terror and murder. He ruined my life. I suffer terrible insomnia and PTSD. But I am a Survivor. God granted me and my 3 month old son life! My husband came home and saved us. I thought I was dying. I prayed "Hail Mary's" and she came to your aid. This book scared the ---- out of me yet again. He got his doing his own dirty work.

Thank you!

Thank you for this book! It is very hard to find. A family member was one of the victims and I was too young when it happened to know the story. It tore my family apart and I needed to have some closure .

John Coston has done a pretty good job with this book

Grabbed this on a whim at half-price books. I knew nothing about the case prior. Initial chapter is somewhat in the future as it details one of the murders that takes place later on. We're then told about two murders that took place closely in time and geography but the victims could not be anymore different. The remaining chapters chronologically detail the childhood and development of the perpetrator along with the multiple killings he committed. It truly is gripping stuff.

True crime is fascinating. It's almost cliché when close friends and acquaintances of the perp are heard saying "We had no idea ...", "He always kept to himself..." Etc... Yet the majority of serial killers are right in the communities they prey on and are known to the victims and their families. Often, they are well liked.

John Coston has done a pretty good job with this book. Often I was reminded of [[ASIN:B0062CU564 In Cold Blood By Truman Capote]]. Coston hasn't just rewritten the case in factual form but has added some coloring in which gives it a novelesque feeling and makes it easier to read. He puts you in the homes of the victims as the horrific deeds were done. It's chilling to imagine what these poor folks must have been feeling.

I started to read this and before I knew it I was 200 pages in. Such is the strength of true crime.

Pick it up, read it, you will enjoy it despite its gruesome content.

Scary...good read!

I recently moved from California to Montana and one evening the area around Missoula was being discussed for my benefit. The subject eventually came around to crime and the lack of it in this area except for the events in this book. It is a true story, a little scary but worth my time to learn about my new enviroment. No one in the group had the book so I went to Amazon to see if it was available. It is used but in great shape. It arrived on time and I was more then satisfied with the service.

Terrible person

It never fails to amaze me how some people feel they have the right to do horrible things to others. I know mental illness can skew how somebody looks at things but it is still sad.

To Kill and Kill Again

Book was in very good shape. The book was well written and since it took place in and around my home town was particularly interesting to me. A real tear jerker. What a sick serial killer who should have been caught well before he was. My heart went out to his victims and their families.

A serial killer in Montana who was

killed by his last victims.

What a scary story. This man lived in Missoula most of his life. His killings started when people didn't know about serial killers. Forensics were far behind what exists today.

He was evil, perverse, and cunning. I don't think they would have caught him before DNA.
