But unfortunately, both white flour and cow’s milk leave me feeling irritable and lethargic. I became aware of my food sensitivities in my early twenties, and since then I’ve been on a mission to make delicious food using good-for-you ingredients—nutrient-rich ingredients that still fluff up and thicken, that are creamy and comforting, that just taste great while fueling your body, giving it the natural energy it needs. Quite simply, I learned how to make healthier swaps for the ingredients I had grown up eating. These swaps are as simple as using gluten-free oat flour in place of white flour that’s been stripped of all its nutrients. Did you know that natural sweeteners contain vitamins and minerals? Meet maple syrup and honey, my two baking best friends. I don’t use any crazy ingredients that you can only find at a specialty store in the middle of New York City. You’ll be able to find everything in this book at your local grocery store, or if not, then you’ll be able to order it on Amazon or Thrive Market. There was no way I could give up all the food I love. What I came to realize was that if I made these swaps, I could still eat everything I loved and my body wouldn’t hate me for it—and I wouldn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. Some of my favorite childhood memories are centered around food. I will always remember my Italian grandma making pizza fritte (fried dough–um yeah, yum) for my brother and me when we would stay at her house, or my dad and I making homemade meatballs and sauce every Christmas Eve, and my mom teaching me how to make Thanksgiving stuffing the first time I hosted the dinner in my own home. Good food can transform us and put a smile on our faces. Some days we just need to curl up on the couch with a big, comforting bowl of pasta bolognese. But in the past, when I indulged like that, I’d feel the effects of a bloated stomach and would be so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. Luckily, with the right ingredients, that’s no longer the case for me . . . or for you! After the response to my first cookbook, True Roots, which dealt with mindful eating and the 80/20 lifestyle, I realized there was a definite need for these types of healthier recipes. I believe that most people are like me: we know nothing beats comfort food—that’s where the heart is. During the fall and winter months, when we’re warm and cozy inside our homes, with our loved ones, food brings us together and helps create lasting memories. This book is a true representation of how my family and I eat on a daily basis. We don’t consume cow’s milk, gluten, or anything processed and white (like white sugar, white salt, or white flour). We make substitutions with other types of dairy (buffalo mozzarella, anyone?), brown rice and lentil pasta, oat flour for baking, maple syrup and other healthy sweeteners, plus pink Himalayan salt, which is packed with vitamins and minerals. I’m not a chef—I’m just a mom who loves to cook. I love food and I’m a health nut, and those two things don’t have to be mutually exclusive. If I can make these dishes, so can you. And if I can commit to making this an important part of my lifestyle, you can too (if you want to really change your lifestyle ). You have a choice every day to live your best life. With love . . . I hope you enjoy this book as much as I loved creating it. Kristin Cavallari Read more

Great cook book but not for me

Was really excited to receive this cook book. As I looked through each page I liked the easy flow of personal description of the recipe and the list of ingredients followed by instructions. I’m sad to say I didn’t find any recipes I wanted to jump to make. It must be my personal taste but the ingredients and complexity of majority of the items were not my favorite.

Also wished there were more photos of the foods. I’m sure many others will find the recipes delicious and hope someone else can use my book :)

I recommend!

I think I like these recipes more than her first cookbook. All of the food looks appetizing! I am very beginner, and didn’t seem too intimidated looking at the recipes. The book is super pretty and well put together. I prefer this over Jessie James deckers new book that was released last week.

Not a Celiac-friendly cookbook despite cover description

Was very excited when this book popped up in my gluten-free cookbook search. It is NOT Celiac safe. Its irresponsible to label this book "free of gluten." The French toast recipe is straight up gluten bread (Ezekiel). Processed meats like chorizo, oat flour, chicken and beef stalks can all be hidden sources of gluten if not explicitly labeled GF. I know better, but someone newly diagnosed may not.

Another home run

I couldn’t wait to get this book. I have used her first cookbook, True Roots, religiously for close to a year now & have loved it. This one might be even better. There is something for everyone and recipes can be tweaked to your liking. Her fathers meatball recipe is TO DIE FOR and I made the avacado cookies this afternoon to rave reviews! This cookbook will not disappoint. Make sure you have some post it notes to mark your favorites... there will be many. Thank you KC and keep them coming.

BETTER THAN OTHER CELEB COOKBOOKS

A real cookbook! Not just a celebrity slapping their name on something. I absolutely love this cookbook. It took one day to arrive and I’ve already made 2 recipes and both were delicious. If you like comfort food and want it to be healthful- buy this!! Plus, all the images are of food! Beautiful pics of food, not of her showing off her body/looks. This cookbook is 10/10!

Perfect recipes for fall/winter

(Written by Stephen’s Fiancé) With the way 2020 has been, we’ve been cooking at home even more than usual. We follow a similar diet to Kristin and her family - using a lot of similar substitutes for recipes that have dairy. This book is just what I needed to revamp my fall/winter menu and I’m excited to try these recipes. As someone who cooks often, I like that there is a good mix of basic and intermediate/complex ones. The pictures are gorgeous and there’s truly something for everyone. Will try to remember to add pictures/updates as we try some recipes.

Update: have made some of the recipes and have really enjoyed everything so far. I do wish there were more pictures in the book to go along with the recipes (as others have mentioned)

The bolognese sauce made for a perfect cozy Sunday dinner. Hearty, savory and pure comfort food without the guilt.

My fiancé and I both loved the roasted squash and leek soup (pictured) but both agreed the smoked salmon wasn’t necessary.

The chicken ragu a la king is delicious! We did decide to leave the chicken thighs in tact and serve with the the sauce over grits instead of pasta. This was just personal preference - I mean why crisp up chicken skin only to toss it other than to eliminate calories? To each their own!

The Peruvian chicken and the creamy jalapeño sauce is awesome! We will be definitely adding it to the rotation. We did chicken thighs for this recipe instead of a whole chicken because it’s what we had. Turned out great!

Eggplant parmesan (pictures) was very simple and turned out great - used the air fryer instead of baking.

Crock pot chicken taco recipe- super simple but turned out great!

Pumpkin syrup/latte truly tastes like fall in a cup without all the preservatives/chemicals of the chain brand. Definitely a nice afternoon treat!

Gluten free is not a choice

I love recipes that tell me that to have a "cheat day" for my celiacs. This is for people who want to avoid gluten...Not people who can't eat it. Another Fraud cashing in.

Average- lots of noticeable errors throughout!

This cookbook was much better than her first one (True Roots). I can see where she was going with the comfort recipes, but not having ANY indicator of how long each recipe takes is frustrating. This is not a weeknight dinner cookbook, I will be going through to read and write out how long it’ll take for most recipes I want to try- Which I shouldn’t have to do, idk who let this pass.

So far I have tried:
Mornings-
Oat Flax Drop Biscuits and Gravy: I liked the sausage gravy recipe, but the flax drop “biscuits” were more like cookies. Just look up a paleo biscuit recipe to make with this gravy.

Soups-
Chicken Tortilla Soup with Poached eggs: thought this was a solid soup recipe. Pretty comforting and I loved having the poached egg, it made the soup more creamy. Pretty good flavors blended overall. However, error of the chicken stock amount indicated: 4 cups (2 QUARTS) chicken stock. WTH?! 4 Cups is 1 quart, I ended up using 6ish cups cause I didn’t want my pot to overflow.

Desserts-
DF & GF Pumpkin Pie: Was a pretty good DF/ GF pie recipe for just the filling. I made my own crust. Overall filling was good.

Drinks-(my favorite section actually, for the afternoons during the holidays)
Pumpkin Spice Latte: I was quite impressed with this, making the PSL syrup with the clean ingredients was easy and levels up from having the typical Starbucks. After trying this homemade version and the convenience of WFH, I’ll never go to Starbucks for PSL again.

Peppermint Mocha: I decided to use 1/4 C full fat coconut milk and 1/4 C almond milk cause the coconut milk made it extra rich and overpowering. Asides from that, love this holiday classic in a cleaner version.

Vanilla Chai Latte: I halved the recipe to make just for me. This was decently okay, but wish the chai taste itself was stronger
