Description

Jenn Thorson always knew she wanted to be a writer; it was the C+ in Penmanship that initially held her back. By the age of 11, she'd written her first mystery novel, Key to the Blue Moon, which her secretary- er, Mom-was good enough to type up for her. It was a raging hit among the two people she knew. Spurred by her dramatic success, she went on to write other works, an experience that found her cluing into the Mystery genre, flirting with the Melodramatic Teen style, and becoming better versed in the Embarrassing Poetry of Which We Shall Never Speak Again school of writing. Yet, oddly, no one stopped her from attending Carnegie Mellon University for Creative and Professional Writing. And it was here she discovered that humor was in her heart. This was a surprise, since the funny bone usually gets so much press. Soon Jenn graduated from Carnegie Mellon and, with an inconvenient bent toward eating regularly, she took a job as a technical writer for a software development company. In the years that followed, she would move from the joys of explaining where the File menu was, to managing the marketing of the company's product line. Marketing, she realized, involved a gleeful combination of Making Stuff Up and Actually Getting Paid for It; so she became a full-time marketing writer and project manager in a local advertising firm. She also continued to hone her fiction, and her first published story, "The Last Great Play of Rosie Cosnowski" made its way into the Timber Creek Review. Since those days, Jenn Thorson's stories have been published in the Humor Press, the magazine for the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and Romantic Homes magazine. Her books currently include There Goes the Galaxy, The Purloined Number and Tryfling Matters.

This book is a spill danger

This book caused me to spill my wine. More accurately, my sudden and uncontrolled burst of laughter caused the cat sleeping comfortably in my lap to startle and jump about two feet towards the coffee table, miss a perfect landing, start to slide to the floor, grab for purchase and instead get the stem of the wine glass, spilling a perfectly good glass of wine. Clearly, this series of events is entirely the fault of the author - who wrote something that actually made me laugh out loud. Judging by the book, I think she would appreciate the comedy of the situation.

I've enjoyed Jenn Thorson's space comedy series since the first book and was excited to read the conclusion. While it's a little sad knowing this story has ended, what an ending it was. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you might be able to start with "Tryfling Matters," but I wouldn't recommend it. For me, at least, some of the satisfaction with this conclusion is watching the characters grow and develop over the series. The book has everything I've come to expect from Thorson's series - humor, action, satire, and heart, among other things. Also, great characters, nicely developed worlds and more. This time around, we get a bit of insight into galactic politics, but also get to come down to Earth. Where the politics aren't all that different. Funny, that.

I like that Thorson has decided to wrap up the series as a trilogy. I'm going to miss the characters and hope she revisits this universe, but this book leaves me happy that Betram Ludlow's story has been told. The reader comes away feeling that it's all wrapped up nicely. A great conclusion to a fun and smart series. I can't wait to see what the author does next!

Tryfling Matters is Wonderful Ending to an Amazing Trilogy (only sad part is that this is the final book).

This is such a wonderful end to an incredible trilogy that I hope will go viral now that all three books are available to read one after the other. That's precisely how I would devour these books if I hadn't read the first two when they initially came out. With each, I found it hard to put down. I know that if I started with the first (knowing the others were available for immediate purchase), I would want to read them right away. In fact, at some point (soon), I plan to take these three beloved books on a vacation where I can read them again in order.

I had not been a huge fan of humorous science fiction until being introduced to There Goes the Galaxy. I fell in love with the quirky characters, pithy and dry comedy, and sparkling story lines. Each has been a bigger delight than the previous and I definitely give this book a gold star recommendation.

Be prepared to laugh out loud (always a sign of a fantastic book!). And if you haven't read the earlier two, I'd read those first (although I think you could jump right into Tryfling Matters and enjoy it as a standalone.

I cannot wait to see what Ms. Thorson comes out with next. She's a fantastic writer so whatever it is, I'll be looking for it.
