Description

Tula Pink is an American textile desiner and quilt maker with a dark sense of humor buried in a sea of print and pattern. Herxa0love affair with textiles began early, and an obsession with sewing soon followed. A few years and twelve fabric collections later, design is her one and only passion. Tula began quilting in an effort to use up her every-growing stash of fabric so she could justify buying more. Sixteen years later, she has a lot of quilts and more fabric than when she started. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

  • A note from Tula:
  • "You will notice...that the blocks are not named but simply numbered. This is intentional. I may have designed the blocks and given you the instructions on what to cut and where to stitch, but I have not infused the blocks with any meaning. This is

Name your blocks, write in the margins, cross out the ones that you don't like, draw hearts around the ones that you love. In a perfect world, everyone's book would end up looking like a journal, coffee stains and all. The more adventurous ones might rename the book and write their own introduction.

Nothing new here.

After the originality of Tula's first book, this one comes as a HUGE letdown. The book consists of 100 photos of uninspired 6 inch blocks, each with a page of "instructions," and a small section in the back outlining several ways to make sampler quilts of the blocks. The block patterns are mostly simple, ordinary shapes that have been around for decades. The only thing "modern" about the blocks is that they are done up in Tula's line of fabric.

The most glaring omission from this book is how the blocks would appear in a quilt. Such as when multiples of one block are combined to make a quilt, or when combined with other blocks, or when used in creative arrangements of sashing, borders, or negative space. Inclusion of this type of information would have made this book more informative and inspirational. Tula's opening remarks for readers to make the blocks their own is no substitute for original content.

I am such a fan of Tula's work. Her first book was brilliant and got me quilting again after a long hiatus. This book just makes me want to hang up my rotary cutter.

Love this. I have worked my way through 10-15 blocks and find this a great project book when you want to sit down and sew but only have a short period of time.. I can knock of a block... or two.. add them to my growing pile and smile knowing I will have this to complete in the future.. Meanwhile I can use up those little scraps that always are accumulating.

Sample is a waste of time.

I just downloaded the sample, so I could see if I am interested in the blocks. The sample is the introduction, with not one single block included. I will not be purchasing.

Simple ideas to use together or separate

As Tula says, make it your own! This book takes simply designed blocks and gives you ways to use them together or by themselves to make your own one of a kind quilt. Love the concept!

Get inspired and practice accuracy!!!

I thought I was reasonably competent at piecing. Well, sewing small pieces together has been a lesson in humility. After finishing block one and seeing that it didn't match the 6 1/2" finished size the pattern expects, I got out my piecing foot and started over. I'm finding this is a great book for practicing accuracy and getting inspired. You may not get through 100 blocks, but can you imagine if it happens! I think this is a wonderful project book.

#100days100blocks

This book was the Instagram inspiration of #100days100 blocks. I consider myself to be a beginner quilter. These blocks gave me just enough challenge to want to improve my skills. I have enjoyed the process, I used fabric that would not be considered modern for the most part, but it still works. I am planning the easy finish for this first one hundred, and will make a sampler of my favorite blocks, larger in size and modern in color. Would highly recommend.

I lurrrrv me some Tula Pink! This book is awesome, the instructions are there for the quilts in her books, but also for the 100 separate blocks for you to use as you want.

For a visual person who wants block ideas

Nice if you want quick examples of 100 different blocks. It shows how each block can be built but doesn't show how to quicken the job using strip piecing. I wish there was a visual of how a block looks like if repeated but it just shows a single block. This is very helpful if you want to be creative and not follow a prescribed "recipe."
